While I personally like to understand all of the rules before I start playing a game, most of my friends don't and would rather learn as they go. I have been working on adjusting my teaching style to accommodate the play as you go style, and this video has been very helpful for that! Thanks Jamey!

I think it's great that you're flexible with your group!

This was a great commentary that can easily apply to teaching any board game. I love the approach with taking what are essentially sample turns, learning how the actions work and then introducing more advanced concepts a little later. Thank you!

Thanks! This is indeed how I teach any game when given the opportunity. :)

I will be teaching the game to an afterwork boardgame night to coworkers soon. The one thing I will make sure to have is a big visual aid of the different icons and card anatomy. I'm using dry erase boards but also contemplated using foam boards. I'm hoping it would encourage everyone to try to come up with simple strategies without having to pass around or wait for the rulebook if it were being used.

Thanks for teaching it! The game actually includes 2 reference cards for every player. Not every icon is on the cards, but most everything is explained on them, so there isn't a need to pass around the rulebook.

I so much like this teaching method of just starting to play the game with the minimum rules explained and then build it from there easy, I m also approaching it each time I teach a SM game. ❤

I just bought my copy the other night, along with enough player mats for everyone who wants to play. This is looking good, and may end up my preferred game vis-a-vis Wingsapan.

Thanks for this, Jamey! Just received my copy of Wyrmspan yesterday, along with the upgraded resource pack. Sidenote, the dragon coins in the upgrade pack are worth the cost alone...so choice! As I was unboxing and playing my first solo round, I kept thinking about how I would teach this to my Wingspan-loving family. Definitely like the idea of teaching the core basics and then simply playing, referencing rules and wingspan similarities (and differences) as you go. Also, I used the Dized app for the first time ever and the tutorial for Wyrmspan is fantastic for learning, even if someone is familiar with Wingspan!

Thanks Jason! I'm glad you like the coins and the Dized tutorial!

My daughter is very excited for this game. She really likes Wingspan, but is obsessed with Dragons, so when I showed her the first announcement, she got very excited. She's turning 9 next month, and while she plays quite a few board games, we often pare down new games for the first few games as we're learning. We don't care much about ruining the balance of the game at this stage, as long as we can learn the mechanics in stages. Do you have any suggestions for this for Wyrmspan? The obvious one would be to not include the Dragon Guild in our first game. Any other suggestions?
@jameystegmaier11 ай бұрын
I would suggest playing the game exactly as it's designed--removing the dragon guild removes an important element for gaining resources. I understand the need to layer on elements as you play (that's how I teach games), but I would do so organically, not in ways that redesign the game on the fly, as that will have unintended consequences.

I know you mentioned Meeple University has a rule video but is Rodney being asked to do a video for this game as well? Always love his videos and how clear and well produced they are and further appreciate you’ve always had him release a video before launch. Was shocked to see this game didn’t have one yet.
@jameystegmaier11 ай бұрын
I love working with Rodney, but I chose to commission Wyrmspan's rules video from Meeple University, who also do a great job. I did this to elevate a smaller channel given the exposure of Wyrmspan. We'll certainly commission Watch It Played in the future for other games! Also, typically Rodney's videos aren't necessarily available at launch. Sometimes they're released much closer to the retail release.

@@jameystegmaier Appreciate the response but also your intentional efforts to use your platform to bring attention to others in the industry doing great things. Looking forward to playing Wyrmspan Tuesday after it arrives!
