Have you watched Trent play? As a Liverpool fan i love him but he has no clue defensively, and we have won with him by holding a midfielder back to cover for him. We gave up less goals when he got injured and Bradley took over. It does make sense to play him when playing with 5 at the back with three center backs. He doesn't fit Southgate's style of fear of losing. Liverpool play attractive soccer aimed at winning.

You don't need to be the best defender when you play three at the back and you use Walkers pace to cover the gap in behind. Crazy not to use Trent in this formation, when he offers so much going forward. You think Klopp or Guardiola would leave Trent on the bench?

No knock on Trippier, who has been a great servant for his country, but this is like choosing a hamburger over a fillet steak. Even in the MF role, TA was the most creative (in a team full of static players). He is one of those players that can do something really special, and Trippier really isn't.

He didn’t look out of place in midfield either. The players ahead of him were the problem. They aren’t fast runners but are rather good when they’re on the ball. You don’t expect Trent to release long passes 😢to players who can’t run but are rather standing and waiting for the ball. Put Ollie and Tony upfront with Trent in that midfield and you’ll see that difference.

A complete myth has developed with TAA that he played badly in midfield. Every midfielder has played badly, Bellingham may have scored but his midfield play has been far worse than Trent. In many ways Trent was our best midfielder in those first games.

No, I'm afraid you need to pay greater attention. Trent does know how to play in midfield, he has done it for extended periods this season. I don't believe he can play alongside Rice and Bellingham but to say he's unable to is plainly incorrect. Personally I would play Mainoo, Rice and Foden with Trent as a RB - that does not in any way result from Trent but rather the balance of the team and available players. And you say Rice has been fine in midfield? Other than a better overall team performance against Switzerland he has been no better than Trent.

if you don`t appreciate what tripps has offered England team for the past ten years then it is not Southgate problem , tripps has been an essential part of the team success in the past three big tournaments , a man with leadership qualities and experience , dead ball specialist and great vision of the field , he is not just a good player , he is a fantastic team player , one more thing tripps didn`t have a bad season , just a few bad moments and an injury mid season , other than that he was a key factor of Newcastle success and made over 20 assists the past two seasons , he EARNED his place as a starter in England , as for Trent even when walker and Kieran retires he won`t be a starter if he doesn`t develop field qualities other than crosses and free kicks .

John Stones playing square balls to Guéhi was an issue too. England seem obsessed with keeping the ball so the opposition can't hurt them, rather than trying to score. They had the 3rd most possession but half the chances of other teams. John Stones doesn't feel comfortable passing into midfield if the midfielders have a man on them. Then it becomes slow and lethargic and they lose the England fans and atmosphere.
