Күн бұрын

When we presented Jamie Fraser with the task of choosing the 'Best Bovine Object', he went a little left field. Not only did he choose something not instantly recognisable as something relating to cows, bulls or oxen, but he also chose an object covered in ancient hieroglyphics that AREN'T from Egypt. Regardless of any of this, it's still one of the beefiest objects we've ever come across. Watch to find out why
Curators Cornered is a series born of necessity: a necessity to find the best object of every conceivable category from the British Museum Collection... also we were all stuck working from home...
Don't forget to like this video if you'd like to see more from Jamie and the Ancient Levant and Anatolian Collections.

A number of you have asked where you can learn to read, or just learn more about, Luwian. Jamie's recommendation is: Hieroglyphic Luwian: An Introduction with Original Texts by Annick Payne ISBN: 344706109X, 9783447061094 The aim of this book, in the author's own words are: 'This book has been written for beginners studying on their own and assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. It begins with the history of the language and its discovery and decipherment up to the present day. It contains a clearly structured concise grammar which offers much original material on Luwian syntax. Twelve reading exercises introduce the basic grammatical principles and are carefully graded to allow the reader to build up a knowledge of common signs and vocabulary as well as giving a broad introduction to Hieroglyphic Luwian literature. Grammatical analysis, commentary, vocabulary notes and a revision section accompany each text. Additionally, the book includes the most extensive up-to-date vocabulary available and a complete sign list. Both will serve the reader as invaluable tools for any further study of the subject.'

I love the passion in the eyes of BOTH of these curators when they talk about the items in their care. Congrats to the British Museum for finding (and hiring) these people and for creating a platform for them to share their knowledge with us in such and enjoyable way. (Of course Irving Finkel is among these superstars of passion, fun and education.)

That’s pretty cool that a calf’s head represents the sound “ma,” while an ox’s head represents “moo.” Please tell me they used a cat’s head for “mew” and a dog’s head for “arf.”

I've already said this in the other video, but here it is again... it's funny how you both managed to include some reference to Irving Finkel in your videos 👍😉. Boustrophedon also explains why we read right to left and other Arabic cultures read right to left despite having common roots, a fact that is hard to explain otherwise. I traverse a supermarket using a boustrophedon and mow the lawn in a similar manner. There is some evidence to suggest that reading a boustrophedon is quicker as we waste time going back to the start of the next line. I am rather fond of the word.

I did notice he started out 'reading from the top right' using _his_ right. When I learned educational methods way back in the ancient mid-20C CE we were taught to reverse from our perspective to the viewer's perspective during lectures. I still do it to this day. I noticed the 'corrected' direction, but didn't notice it was not he who changed it. The frame flip was an easy way to correct. We also learned to write on blackboards without taking our eyes off the class, but British Museum audiences are so well behaved that is not necessary.
