Working on my wife’s 4.7 Jeep. Got all the accessories pulled and was just about to pull the harmonic off when I noticed the notch marked tdc. Seeing as its has a key way to line up with, do I have to pay attention to this. I am in the process of getting to the timing, oil pump, and crank seal. Great video! Thanks for your time. Shout out to Popsy for all his hard work as well.

I'm a retired master of 47 years and your tutorial is flawless,damn good presentation,only one suggestion to anyone working with a multichain engines,you're gonna get messy on this,but it matters,the first 30 seconds to 1 minute run on startup on new engines or new timing components on these complex engines is critical,the stretch happens then ,till oil pressure slings on components,i always soak chains in rear end lube for 1 hour or more,then towl outside and let it drip off,then install,engines run quiet then you can hear cam followers and lifter designs,i also run duralube in engines after breakin and every third oil change,my ford has 487k on it with three timing chains,460 ford gets 16 mpg,it works

Hey guys. two weeks of rpm not going over 2k rpm on a new reman engine, I was very frustrated to say the least. I found your video. spent 3 hours taken off valve cover spinning the crank watching colored chain links. finally got to the black link and found it to be one link off. put it on mark, and this engine running so good you can hardly hear it. smooth. Long block from engine world. thank you so much for this information. great Video. Ken Manning

I love this video. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota that was given to me, and most likely has the valve seat issue, making the computer think the fuel injector #2 is bad. The injector was replaced, and the voltage checked on the wiring. Also, swapped ECM's with another one and it worked fine on the other truck. I have never dug into an engine this far, and this video gives me 110% confidence in fixing the truck. THANK YOU!

Thanks for a great series. I had been through this process 2 years ago, but my lack of understanding on the operation of the fan clutch, led me to falsely thinking I had corrected an overheating problem by replacing the thermostat. Anyway, your videos helped a lot. I do wish I had watched the one about properly placing the cam sprocket on correctly earlier. yeah, i did it.. I didn't have it on all the way, and after 1-2 hours, it spun free and chipped down the locating pin, exactly how your video later points out. Luckily the shop that machined my heads, changed out the pin on my cam, and helped replace three bent valves. Great series, though. Now that I have it running, wanted to give your props!

I want to add a wedge out of a 5inch by 1×2 with one edge up 2 1/4ish along the 5" and cut taper down the 2" side 1/2" then a zip tie around both guides makes it able to remove the head and not lose mark or guides spring out of place. Also remove all rockers and cam moves freely! If you have the valve spring compressor tool for the 4.7 is easier and less chance of scratching up the cam. But thanks for your time to show all this work!

This was just the video I was looking for. I've done several timing chains on other motors and I was kind of dreading doing the timing chain in my Durango with the 4.7 and this just made it that much easier. Ordering parts this week and knocking it the second the parts arrive. It's been ticking for a long time now and I've kinda just been wanting the motor to blow up so I could hemi swap it and well it's still trucking along. So long story short it's timing chain and guides time along with oil pump and might as well do the water pump since I'm there anyway. Again thank you for the video and the amount of detail you put into it!

Something that makes this job easier. Dont focus on getting the cam chains 100% lined up on the idler pulley. Don't install the tensioner or tensioner arm. Install crank to idler pulley chain. Remove cam gears. Do the RIGHT side first, followed by the LEFT side. Install tensioner arms and tensioners. This is a one man job. Tighten all to spec. I've done this job myself in less than 10 minutes.

I didn't use a cam gear tool i just used the chain to hold the gears still and break the bolts loose. As long as you put something in place (i used a very long screwdriver.) to hold the balancer still you wont move the engine much and can move it back afterwards. Then you finish taking the bolts out of the cams and remove the gears

Thanks for the video it really helped me a lot. I had a question about the timing chain, after I removed the timing chain I assured that it was on TDC but wasn't sure if it was on compression or exhaust. You explained in one of your videos that it doesn't matter if it was in compression or exhaust just as long as it was on TDC on #1 cylinder. So after I installed the timing chain on the 4.7 engine and matched the colored link chain to the dots on the sprockets and made sure everything was aligned but yet the car didn't start. What could've gone wrong? Keep up the good work and thanks again.

I had posted on this page before, I've finally assembled my 4.7 to the point of adding the timing chains. These aftermarket tension-ers are JUNK even the Cloyes has Design Deficiencies on the spring loaded tension-er The pivot bore sleeve is much larger than the bolt, the bushing is missing, there is no way to bury the bolt to a stop with a bushing in the pivot bore to let the arm pivot freely. Beware of aftermarket tension-ers like the Cloyes 90393SX there not right at the pivot point and on the back side the tang that locks the nylon pad onto the aluminum body is short of reaching the square hole it is to latch into. Excellent Video... everything necessary to time the 4.7 sure helped me in my first experience with the 4.7 mickey mouse backwards engineered engine that is a poor attempt at stealing the V12 Ferrari design. Thanks Dodge for the #^@(!#G !!!

first of all you described this perfect but one issue i ran into on some of these timing chains there are only 2 dot one on each side of the chain and not two black links. on the inside of the idler pulley sprocket there is one dot on one side count ten teeth from the top tdc dot on the idler gear both ways and the dots on the chain will match up
@jamiejonesthecarman7 жыл бұрын
Nathan, thanks for sharing that man. Much appreciated. facebook.com/JamieJonesTheCarMan1/
@nathangodwin94767 жыл бұрын
i would like to ask if yolu can confirm the tension on the chains my problem is now is that driver side lower part of the chain is a little loose the passenger side is tight thats with it at tdc when i turn the motor over the passenger side chain gets loose on the top i just put new heads on is this common with out the pressure build up in the tensioners also when i took the passenger tensioner off there was not a gasket i never had a prob. with chain slap or noises the guides all look really nice i did replace the two the the tensioners press agianst tho.
@jamiejonesthecarman7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, the tensioners are not supposed to have gaskets so no problem there. Have you released the tension in all three of the tensioners now? If so, there should be enough tension to make all three chains snug with no slack.You should turn the crank 3 times, by hand with the V8 sitting at the 12 o'clock position on both cams and you should not have any slack. If you do have slack, you more than likely have a faulty tensioner on the chain that is giving you slack.

Jamie I have a 2007 4.7 dodge Durango the secondary gears have different teeth an chain design then the aftermarket kit I bought , an the pivot bolt in the tensioner arm is different the oem arm has a bushing in it an my aftermarket arm doesn't . I need a bolt with a shoulder on it to work have you ever seen this. I checked advance, autozone , online they all sell the the same kit
@jamiejonesthecarman8 жыл бұрын
Can you reuse your tension bolt ? Do the gears have the same size and teeth

5 years after I have a question, if you want to removed a head for a head gasket, would anything happen if you only remove on side head gasket, / chain tensioner, chain, and put it back toguether?
@jamiejonesthecarman3 жыл бұрын
No I wouldn’t heard anything I would just check to make sure you don’t have any seriously Warren parts you know I wouldn’t wanna put bad parts back on but yeah you could take it literally completely apart and just change the gasket and put it right back together and if that’s all that was wrong we will still run just like it did
@jamiejonesthecarman3 жыл бұрын
Actually I’ve taken the heads off of stuff that like back in the old days of trying to raise the side and the other Al not particularly proud of it but it will work you can pull the head off of something and just cut out a piece of cardboard flat and it’ll probably get you through 2030 minutes of the race another words a good head gaskets better than a bad one LOL

Thanks for the video. My only question is at 39:40, how do you know while turning the camshaft that much you’re not hitting the valves against the pistons?

Take out the rockers and re-install them after. With all valves closed there is no risk.

I originally did the job to replace the oil pump and just wondering does it matter what stroke your in to line everything up
@jamiejonesthecarman9 жыл бұрын
As long as the crank is on TDC, it does not matter. The stroke is set by the cams so if they are on 12, that is the compression stroke. If you move them to 6, its on the exhaust stroke. Was it running good before you pulled the chain? Why did you pull the oil pump? Was the oil light on or was it making noise?
