Pull the plugs, or use the serpentine belt on, turning the motor by the alternator nut. Spins the motor plugs in or out. With the fan out it's easier and faster to do this job. The time saved pulling the radiator/fan draining the coolant and pulling the heater hoses will make life easier. Former Mopar tech here, did a lot of these under warranty along with 3.7's as well, you can have the job done in under 2 hours and running again removing key components. no sense leaving it all in there and fighting the job, remove as much as possible and go with the flow! Nice job explaining and demonstrating the process of R&R the lash adjusters, and reasoning behind doing this before they fail.

A first timer with decent tools and some engine experience, 6-8 hours, realistically. I think it took me that long the first couple times, after that, I knew all the shortcuts and got the time down, so I was getting paid 5.5 hours for ~2~ hours of work, Flat Rate. Harry homeowner could do it in a weekend easy I think, with some decent tools, nothing extravagant or special, though there are special tools available for this engine.

i@@alant7516 Rent or buy a fan clutch removal kit. Other wise, a long skinny punch and a ball peen hammer. Facing the fan from the front end,., put the punch on the left side of the big fan nut. Hit it (the punch with a several pound hammer) counter-clockwise, 1/4 turn and it should come loose, then unscrew it. Shouldn't be tight, 10-15-foot pounds would be a considered almost too tight.

*** This is the way! After buying, fumbling around for hours, and breaking the "special tool", I bent a 10mm wrench as shown (90 deg to get in and 30 deg to clear master cylinder.) It worked so much better! Some notes: 1. 1 full turn of the main will turn your cam about 180. You can get to it from the oil filter hole in the skid plate so you don't need to take the front apart. 2. Work a cylinder at a time, get the lobes pointing upish, pop rocker out, reinstall last one first - it'll save you time. 3. It's easier to just take all the stuff on top off. Yes it takes longer to put it all back but you won't cuss near as much. (2000 Dodge Dakota)

Nice and informative video. You go into some of the important mechanical theory itself, behind the valve train. Those 4.7's need more regular oil changes and good driving habits (reasonable rpm's, time to warm up in winter, etc). My 06' Commander, 140k miles, I bought for dirt cheap, they said "bad head gasket.".....turned out to be both heads were completely black and sludged oil, burnt valves, 2 dislodged rocker arms, and a few dropped valve seats. Not to mention 2 broken timing chain guides and plugged oil valleys 😂. Was a fun project and saved it from the scrapyard

So she shut the engine off opened the hood to find oil everywhere and smoke from it pouring on the exhaust manifolds. I grabbed my kiddos and head over to pick her up there is a hole the size of a rocker in the passenger valve cover. Cross your fingers for me 🤞 it only damaged the VC and didn't destroy my Cylinder head. 😂

The first time I ever did the VCGs on these 4.7s, it took me over an hour to get all those damn grommets out. lol. Then I found the perfect tool. A 90 degree dirt cheap dental type pick. poke the point into the grommet and rock the angle of the pick against the VCG. it takes 30 seconds to remove them all, AND it can be easily done in the engine bay making the cover so much easier to pass through on the much harder passenger side. Great video btw.

Bought my 06 ram 1500 and once delivered had 215 miles on it.close to the end of the first year of running it i pulled a camper into the mountains of n.c. for a hunting/fishing trip. All went well and we left. Heading down the grade, in tow haul, i slowed rig and dropped it into 2nd gear to help hold me back. Even keeping it at low speed and mid high rpms i heard a change. Motor had around 25k on it at the time. Got it home, cooled off, and started it up. Been ticking ticky tic tic tic ever since. Itll tic heavy when cold and just starting up. Once the engine gets warm and pressure builds itll stop or just be a light tic. It has been a great audible warning if my oil is getting low as well. Fill it up and it diminishes. I now have 357 thousand miles on her and she is purring strong. Ive always said id do this repair job if it gets any worse. After watching this video itll be done as soon as the parts get here. Good video, and thanks

I went through this only to still have the ticking noise. If you have done this procedure and still have ticking problem then do a pressure test on the cylinder that is ticking, not a compression test which will fail on a bad cylinders anyways but you will be able to hear the pressure moving between cylinders via a bad head gasket blown between cylinders. This is what I found on my 4.7

I've also seen on of the wheels on the roller followers fail and wipe out a camshaft, while their out it would be worth making sure each of those spin freely. Another trick before doing a hot start: disconnect all the injectors, then crank it over with the starter for about 15 seconds. Wait a minute, then do it again another two times. Not faulting you, and you do a hell of a good video, just one thing you messed up on. The lifters do not collapse and the springs are not failing. The opposite is true. When a lifter collapses, the internal parts go down all the way to the bottom. These do not. They actually fill up with dirt or sediment and stay all the way extended up. They virtually become a solid lifter. Without the give of the lifter pushing down, that is what makes it possible for the cam to spit the fulcrum out. Aside from that one detail you did a very good job.
@DEInTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. That is very interesting and contrary to what I have been taught. I will do some more research on this. Thanks for educating me
@JF323042 жыл бұрын
Cough... Unfortunately I don't think that's the case. You can actually swap these out for solid lifters (martin built has a video) they are not fun but can be done. What causes these to mess up is gunk inside prevents the "cup" from coming back up under spring tension. That same cup has oil pressure under it to push up the rocker and hence open your valve. If you wanted you could take them apart and clean them up and actually revive them. But it's not worth it as a full new set is only a few bucks.

Have a 2004 WJ with the 4.7 and 174,000 miles. It has always had 3,000 mile oil changes and all regular maintenance. Its valve cover gaskets do leak a bit, but it never requires any added oil between changes though it does smell bad and occasionally will smoke just a tad from the exhaust manifolds (and this comes out from around the driver headlight). It has never overheated. At this point I am tempted not to mess with it. It has very little cash value as is, and it runs fine (no warning lights or anything abnormal). It was pretty much gifted to me and I have two much newer vehicles to daily drive. What say you? I am afraid I will end up messing something up when it might run another 100,000 miles just fine.

Good work and good vid. Gotta feel like a weight off your shoulders having that job done. Now you can hopefully rest easy knowing that’s done!

While in there replacing the lifters, wouldnt you reccomend replacing the notorious leaky valve seals?
@DEInTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
I did not (obviously), but sure. That would be something else to do. I did not as I did not feel like messing with the valves and risking dropping on into the cylinder

I just got a 2008 Ram 1500 about a year and a half ago and had heard that the 4.7L had a lot of issues with gaskets but mostly head gaskets if you get the motor to hot. The truck runs great and has about 117,000 on it and doesn't make any weird sounds, is there anything I should watch for or any special oil or oil treatment you recommend? Great video!
@DEInTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
Not really. As it is an overhead cam engine it does fine on normal synthetic oil. They only go bad when they are neglected. If cared for they are great engines.
@webman19564 жыл бұрын
@@DEInTheGarage Thanks for the info. Never was much into Ram but I traded my Equinox even for it and I must say I`ve become a fan of them and they have gotten a lot fancier since then.

The 4.7 has 3 timing chain tensioner that are hydraulic tensioners the port for these tensioners is microscopic. I would not pour Rotella diesel oil in as it will sludge up and cause issues. I recommend using full synthetic 5w 30 and use seafoam at each oil change. Pour 2 shots of seafoam into oil drive for an hour or two then have it changed while the engine is hot thus allowing all the broken down sludge out before it re-solidifys

Mopar oil filters have an anti-drain back check valve built in to hold the oil in the oil pump after shut down that helps prevent hydraulic lifters from falling off. I use full synthetic oil, Hy-Per Lube HPZ212 Zinc Replacement Additive, Lucas oil stabilizer, a half quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and say a prayer with every oil change :-)

The rotella oil you’re talking about is it the heavy duty diesel oil?? Idk how likely a response is as this video is 5yrs old lol but worth a shot!

I'm about to take on the task of replacing the lifters on my 4.7 as well. Just wondering if mopar lifters are significantly better for them to demand the price as compared to the melling lifters ??
@DEInTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
I really do not think so. I certainly trust Melling for in-engine components

Nice informative vid buddy! Was nice to see that Milwaukee ratchet you fixed in your other vid working real nice 👌! I hope Ruby is feeling happy and healthy! Eric watch for those Ruby bits. She's a 4.7 so she bits hard! Hopefully you don't infect Barney. Being a 4.0 I'm sure he should be fine!

LOL... Compared to the 4.0, the 4.7 really is an infection. haha. Valve covers on the 4.0 take 30 minutes...

Thanks D&E, Did you replace all the cover bolts too, or just the new blue grommets? They look clean, but maybe you just cleaned them up once you had it off. Thanks again, Going to try this in the next week or two.

No, I reused the same bolts. I did clean them up a bit before reinstalling

most guys I know "bro I put a KnN air filter on my nissan the cut the muffler off and it has like at least 50 more horse power, thing rips" Meanwhile at D&E: " while disassembling the top half of my engine to just simply reach the valve cover gaskets, I've decided to replace the lifters to restore max valve lift and increase the power and efficiency of my engine " lol some people (think) they're car guys, and then some people ARE car guys. This man is a real car guy, trust me. I bet he probably knows how much end play he has in his crank, after balancing it himself with a file for hours on end. I like this channel.

HAHA.. What a nice thing to say. Thank you. We are far from experts, buyt we are dedicated to doing the best job we can with the knowledge and tools available. The real joy of being a car guy comes once you start tearing into the motor. The superficial stuff is fun, but the real rewards are inside

Hey buddy, great video. I know it’s been a while since you posted this but i had a question. I’ve got the 3.7 WK and i’ve got some ticking. happens at cold start, warmed up, and acceleration. It’s significantly louder from up top on the driver side. Would this job be what i’m looking for? I’m not 100% sure if it’s lifters making the noise but that’s what i’ve been told.
