@@YouCanSeeATC I thought ATC did a fine job. Very calm and collected, as was the crew. True, there was lots of chatter, but the crew and ATC wanted to keep near the airport, and ATC had to give them vectors to do so. Since SW never declared an emergency they did not totally clear the area of other traffic and ATC needed to understand when they would be ready to land. The fuel and souls on board question is for crash rescue planning and is usually asked if the situation is not dire. I was a bit surprised that the controller didn’t know or recall that the localizer to 28 was out of service, but SW reported the airport in sight and was cleared for a visual approach, which doesn’t require lateral guidance. Just use the old eyeballs! I think that with a stuck stabilizer having some vertical guidance would have been helpful, which I believe is why the controller mentioned using the RNAV approach to 28. This safe outcome is why pilots and controllers do all their training. 😎

Alaska Airlines 261 is a pretty famous case where bad maintenance work led to a jammed elevator on a 737. The air crew was able to compensate briefly with the trim control, but then the jack screw that controls the elevator stripped completely and doomed the flight. It will ultimately depend on the perceived problem and the flight crew's training and skill to determine best course of action but if they're able to maintain stable flight in their present state, sometimes it's safest to leave it be and limp home.

Well, other than getting some ATC priority, there is t really any advantage to declaring the emergency. ATC is already doing their job of keeping us clear of traffic, but truth be known, we shouldn’t think like that. Because all the other entities need as much heads up as possible. I personally like to get all that squared away at the beginning as much as possible. But when these things start out they are very chaotic. And interruptions in dealing with outside entities can be very dangerous if we don’t get the flying part right at the beginning.
