As a kid, I always liked the mine levels , mostly because of this theme, but also the crystals. But as a 36 year old dude who's been through a lot in life, this theme holds some personal meaning. See...I'm a trauma survivor--and not just from one instance, but literally my entire life up till when I was 25 was trauma. I was born into it, and it's pretty much the foundation of who I am as a person. I didn't have a childhood to speak of; didn't learn about stuff like trust, friendship, family, love, or human connections in general. Friendship is something I still don't really "get," and romance? Yeah, that's probably never gonna happen, either, because I'm legitimately unable to connect with people as friendships and romance require. It was never part of my development. Recently I've come to realize that I've effectively barred from getting any real foothold in society (read: the US) due in part to the trauma--I'm actually dealing with many different barriers, and they're all feeding into each other. I can't say it's all bad, though--lots of silver linings in my journey. Having to learn everything on my own; navigate the world on my own, develop my own values and principles, and literally my own identity and individuality, has given me a lot of insight about various things. It also means I look into society as an outsider. And no--it's not as simple as "seeking help," not even close. But I won't get into that. What any of this has to do with "Mining Melancholy," is that in order to get to where I am now, I've had to do a hell of a lot of metaphorical digging. And unlike a standard mining op, I've never had any rock-and-stone brothers to support me--if anything, asking for help has only gotten me pretenders, apathetic sorts, people moving to silence or dismiss me, punish me outright for speaking up, or conniving types who actively exploited my suffering and overall circumstances for their own personal gain. Nobody has ever really made an actual, genuine effort to support me--and by that, I mean actively endeavor to understand me, where I come from, and what I've been through. So, I've had to do all this digging through my past alone. As far as "tools" go? I've been doing this on my knees, with my bare hands. It's all I've ever had. I've had to unearth, and process, more painful revelations than I can count--and every time I've struck what might be called "black gold," I've had to resurface and ponder what I've uncovered. Especially since stuff keeps happening that forces me to go back to the drawing board. It's been a long, arduous, painful, and dare I say melancholic journey--but paradoxically, as I've dug deeper, the light at the end of the tunnel has become ever brighter, and closer within reach. The oft-echoed saying about the truth being liberating or setting you free, is basically the message here. It's been almost 11 years since I started, and I've about reached the end of the tunnel. But I've also reached the limit of what I can do alone; not sure how I'll overcome a lifetime of...well...learning the dark side of humanity. But if nothing else, I'm at least aware there are good people out there. Seems like good progress to me. Maybe it's the right time to find those rock-and-stone brothers now?

I thought differently. They ARE the song. The clanging and banging is their pickaxes and hammers, working away the stone. The humming is a song all of them sing at once because there’s nothing else to do. The Kremlings are known to be mistreated by their king, so who knows how long they’ve been down here, away from water, away from home, away from their families? Just working away at the stone, again and again, day after day. Maybe this place is even a prison of sorts, a labor camp for Kremlings who upset their king. They sleep at night among the rats and in the dirt, just a short few hours of solace from the long days of work that they are forced to do.
