I used to fight tools that picked up a bit of a magnetic charge, in the tool box with other magnetic tools, but for things like putting keepers back in, I started using a ground down chop stick, made from plastic, it can't pick up a charge, so things don't stick to them... I also use the same, when messing around in the valve bodies on the pre electronic automatic transmissions... I didn't have to worry about things moving on me, when I tucked them into place, when there was no magnetism around. Just my 2 cents, thanks for your work, your different episodes, I have enjoyed watching, and picking up things I didn't know. Thank you!

I was thinking a brass rod type tool to avoid the magnetism issue. Plastic works as well, like you use.
@CoolerQ

You can also buy a magnetizer/demagnetizer so you can control the magnetism on your tools. Or if you just want to make sure there's absolutely zero magnetism, you can buy a degausser.

@ , I get it Jim, we are close in age. I wear reading goggles too. I’m up to +300’s! Ain’t nothing wrong with my eyes, it’s my short arms causing my vision issues! I had an accident in 2011 causing me to change professions from the automotive/ racing/ manufacturing career. I must be an idiot, I chose to revert and use my ole Gunsmith School education from 1980. If you think those keepers are small, you ought to see what’s inside a firearm! I work on every brand and type made. I do NOT use anything magnetic. Magnetizing small parts make them impossible to handle with tweezers etc. I had a 25 year career building roller bearing engines and transmissions.(Harley Davidson) I love the convenience of a magnet and use one for the very same use you did in your video. I would never use anything magnetic during assembly of internal engine or tranny rolling parts, particularly roller/needle bearings. In a worse case scenario, it can cause a needle bearing to skate, then flat spot. Just about every serviceable bearing in an old HD engine (up till early 2000’s) is a variable sized, individual caged roller bearing in a serviceable/sizable outer race. Every race has to be sized then the correct oversized individual needle bearing installed in a cage…check fit and reparation if necessary. I spent a career working with teeny tiny roller bearings which can only be identified with a micrometer. I get the eye thing. Best wishes!

You installing the valve seals reminded me of a story from back in the 80's. A machine shop did a VW rabbit cylinder head for me. I got it back together and the engine smoked like a freight train (no smoke prior). I told the machine shop I was gonna bring the head back to them so they could ck it out. They found they forgot to put on the valve stem seals. I had to fight like crazy to get them to give me another gasket set. The job went well. Weeks later, I went to pick up a set of 302 heads that got reconditioned. I looked closely inside the valve springs, they forgot the valve stem seals on those heads too.

2021 I overhauled the engine on my the new to me 1996 Audi A4 1.8T quattro. Only 114000 original kilometers on the clock, therefore was everything in normal shape. But all the exhaust valve guides were way outta spec. So new 8 exhaust guides, 8 new sodium filled exhaust valves, new valve seals, everything together, runs like a champ. Awesome video guys. Hope to see a little bit more of the newer aluminum head/block stuff. Hey, do you guys dont use a little plastic cap for installing the valve guide seals? Prevents the seal to get caught up in the keeper groove and eventually rip the sealing lip.
@JAMSIONLINE
@JAMSIONLINE 15 сағат бұрын
We do use a plastic protector on valves with sharp keeper grooves. The Subaru uses a bead style keeper and the groove in the valve has a nice radius that the seal glides right over without damaging it in any way. Good point!

Jim, the metric set of Allen keys I have, has a mgnetizer/ demagnetizer built into the plastic keeper. I have found on screwdrivers and picks it works very well to magnetism them and equally well to demand them. I don't know if you have one similar, but maybe your tool supply truck can help next time he stops by, or your local HF store just might have one hanging on a peg somewhere. Water Injection is EASY to install yourself and will keep deposits low. I ran it on my Chevy small block turbo's back in the late '70's and they were clean as new inside after they blew up. :) A simple Hobbs pressure switch about 4 psi turning on the water pump then spray into the turbo inlet. Really helps keep the detonation down so the knock sensor won't retard the timing to do the same job.

I was surprised that as a result of possible piston against head intersection you didn't have a bent valve or 2...

The basket spins and there's a water pipe with spray nozzles on the sides that sprays caustic liquid at pretty high pressure.

Think of it as a big dishwasher with lots of spray nozzles, very hot water that's caustic to break down carbon and grease.

50:51 why are you putting keepers on the near/far side? Why not left/right?

Did they not send the rockers and cams with those heads im pretty sure they have solid lifters and they would need shims to adjust the valve lash !

The Subaru EJ20 and EJ25 were solid cam bucket engines. Later, Subaru used the FA20DIT and it was a hydraulic lash adjuster engine. I think the easiest thing to see is that the Subaru EJ engine is a timing belt engine, the Subaru FA engine is a timing chain engine.

If you have a soldering pistol it is really wasy to magnetize/demantetize tools. Takes just a second.

Would have been good to explain installed spring height/pressure and maybe the need for additional shims under the springs. I understand that for this application not necessary but just to show people that sometimes it is required. Also I use a dab of white lithium grease on keeper grooves to hold keepers in place during install. Again no disrespect, I love your content, but I really wouldn't spray my new seals with brake cleaner, some materials might not like that, just my humble opinion, again no disrespect intended❤. I'm also as old as the cleaning guy, so I been doing this awhie also😂

What tool are you using the remove the exhaust manifold studs?

Looks like he’s using something like the Koken 4100A stud setter/remover that I use? They use a set of rollers inside a cam ring to grip the stud. Works the same way as the one way/sprag clutch you find in automatic transmissions, but it grips in either direction of rotation. No doubt other tool companies have something similar as well, but there happens to be a demo on here (YT) which demonstrates their use that you might be interested in
