Scotland recover from being thrashed 5-1 at Wembley a year earlier by deservedly beating rivals England 2-1 in the Home International Championship at Hampden Park in May 1976. Mick Channon gives England an early lead but Don Masson heads Scotland level and Kenny Dalglish grabs the winner as his shot squirms between Ray Clemence's legs.

Yes, Colman's deep voice and sparse commentary added weight and gravitas to important games, replaced by the awful Motty with non stop chattering and high pitched wailing, which most commentators copy today.

David Coleman is another great loss to BBC's sport commentary, along with Harry Carpenter, Bill McLaren, Richie Benaud, Dan Maskell, Len Martin, Ted Lowe and so many others. The 70s, 80s and early 90s really were the great days of BBC Sport. They are no one like them now. Only Murray Walker, John Motson and Tim Gudgin are left, it seems. It's a shame Coleman never got the send-off he deserved, truly was the master voice. I miss him so.

I was there. :D Great memories. After the match we were walking back to the railway station for our train north to Aberdeen and an SFA bus came slowly through our ranks. Being tall I spotted a spiky haired individual poking his head up over the back seats and looking back at us ....it was Rod Stewart! Scotland had a brilliant side back then. Certainly better than England's. They remained decent until at least the millennium and normally qualified for tournaments. They produced players like Souness, Law, Dalglish, McCoist, Strachan, McAllister, Gemmill, Hutchinson etc, the list goes on. Why are those Scottish players now? Both England and Scotland suffer the same problem with blazers who are behind the times and not enough good coaching and skill put into their national teams. Both countries need a shake-up in youth development from top to bottom. I know that we have so many foreign players in the Premier League where British players, especially Scottish ones, used to dominate but blame must also be put at the SFA's door, along with the FA down in England. We both need the types of organisation they have in Germany with ex-players on top on the football associations.

Both teams had great players in their ranks then and were quite evenly matched. Despite his mistake allowing Dalgliesh's shot between his legs Ray Clemence was a superb goalkeeper and in this respect England were far superior as Alan Rough was at best 'very average'

In my opinion Rough got far too many caps. There were other, better keepers for Scotland, such as Bobby Clark. We couldn't match England for 'keepers, but Rough was chosen far too often for my liking.

However, I think Tommy Smith got it right when he said that in the early 70s when Shilton was always picked, Clemence was leagues ahead. 100% agree. Today's snowflakes would be in a coma with some of these challenges. Dalglish, Jordan, Gemmill, Masson...skillful, hard, solid as a team. And England with Mick Channon, Keegan, Thompson, Mick Mills. Today's overpaid, mollycoddled wankers couldn't live with either of these teams.
