Jan van Riebeeck was born in 1619 in the Netherlands and joined the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1639. Are there any descendants of Van Riebeeck in South Africa today..?? Also, western history books like Portuguese, Dutch, British say it was the spice trade that led them to venture out. This is hard to believe once you delve further eg, if Europians imported spices in large quantities for them to establish those trading companies, then today or 100, 200 years ago spices would have been widely used in everyday cuisine in Europe. There would have been old recipe books showing spice use back then by ordinary people. I think it was more to do with the quest for gold, silver and precious stones. Its like the 'flat earth' story - before Columbus and da Gama's sailings to the New World. The true fact was that early European navigators did not know how to calculate Latitude, which is necessary for ocean crossings. It was only the Arabs in the Indian Ocean and some Polynesians in the Pacific who knew the art of Latitude calculation for many centuries.

Gold and Witwatersrand was definitely the reason why the English went into the Boer Republics and declared war etc.
