He puts so much force behind the javelin that it flickers like an arrow from a bowstring... absolutely amazing

I just love that throw on 1:26. I was 15 and went to Gothenbörg for the 2006 European championships. Back then I had no idea who Jan Zelezny, Andreas Thorkildsen or Tero Pitkamaki were, that JZ was 40 years old here, that this throw is the M40 world record for javelin throw (85.92m) and that JZ despite being 3x olympic champion and having the world record never won an European championship and this was his last chance to get it. I am so happy I was there to witness the last event JZ did in his career.

Jan threw well over 80 meters a couple years ago when he showed technique to his trainees. He hurt his back though. Also I think the European championship wasn't his last race, that was I think later that year in Mlada Boleslav (where he started) but definitely it was the last major one.

The incredible velocity at which he releases the javelin is just mind-blowing! How he managed to maintain his position as the world-class thrower for so long is a complete mystery to me. MsG

If you watch Zelezny‘s style especially through his crossover steps you can see the difference between him and most contemporary throwers today. He does not lose speed through his cross steps and there’s very little up-and-down motion. I’m constantly watching contemporary throwers and they generally slow down through the cross steps and have a lot of up and down and almost jumping motion. They lose a lot of energy that way. He was fluid from his run through the cross steps and carried all that energy into the throw. I have not seen anyone like him. His form was impeccable.
