Extremely informative video. I am a converted R6 mirrorless user. I was really hesitant at first. When I got the demo at the camera store in Helsinki, back in February I was sold. There is no going back for me. It just elevated my photography skills to a much higher level. The canon eos R6 is well worth it's 3,000€ cost.

I switched from 7D2/70-200 II to R5/100-500 and there's no going back. Regarding the focussing issue, I sometimes point to an object close by, focus and re-focus on my subject. A small bird like chickadee or finch will be way gone by the time it gains focus. It's always fun watching you both🙏🙏🙏

Great vid, guys, and I have to say I don’t disagree with any points you make. I have sold my 5d Mk IV and bought an R6 and there is no going back for me. Duade’s point about his “old” lenses performing better on his R6 also rings true with me. Both my 600/4 L IS 1 and 100-400 mk II perform much better. The only snag for me is that with the 600/4 I can no longer use the focus preset button, which I did find useful with the 5d. Since buying my R6 two of my friends have also bought one each, on my recommendation, so I think I am due a bit of commission from Canon!

Great video guys! I'm an enthusiastic amateur bird photographer who started shooting Canon around 2009 with the 40D, then 7D, then 5DIII. The APS C cameras were very good in good light, but with birds in flight, they were terrible (in my hands). I switched to Sony with the A7R3 and borrowed a friend's A9 and his 100-400 and 200-600 which are great lenses, but I hated the camera body ergonomics and the horrible Sony menu system. I tried the Olympus EM1X, which is OK with the 300 F4, but again only in great light. When Canon brought out the R5 and R6, I immediately rented them and fell back in love with Canon! I now own the R5 and the 100-500 RF lens--you guys are spot on-- great eye tracking autofocus, lighter weight and much better balanced than the Sony with the 200-600. I have many more keepers, especially with birds in flight. My old EF 300 F4 and 400 F5.6 work great with the adapter. Keep up the geat conversations.

Great work Guys, very helpful for people on the fence and I echo your thoughts, I made the switch to mirrorless 4 years ago after a few years with premium Canon DSLR’s & all the best L lenses, I loved my Canon’s but could not ignore all the hype about Sony’s A9, as I do mainly BIF I gave one a go, immediately I was getting many images my 1DX mi2 just couldn’t do, back then the only native lens was the 100-400mm GM so that was my lens for 3 years and can say I couldn’t be happier even with just that, so very happy Canon have jumped on the mirrorless party with some superb cameras, we all win!

Great vid Jan! You guys make a great team! Regarding autofocus, I found a workable solution to the bird on thin perch, and camera focusing on the background/can't find the bird in front of you problem. Under those conditions, I've switched the back autofocus from SPOT to AREA [ ] autofocus. It's much easier to get on the subject or at least in the range of the subject, then hit the EYE autofocus, and it'll jump right on the birds eye.

I will be moving to mirrorless in the near future. I do not use large primes due to back injuries and would miss the reach my 7D mk2's provide with 400 mm lenses. Still unclear if canon will release a cropped sensor R series camera to replace the 7D, I think it would be a very popular and profitable niche model as the 7D mk2 was. If it does not arrive I will have to go for the R5 as my 7d's are on their last legs. With the R3 announced and a rumoured R1 it appears strange that canon have developed 3 expensive professional grade full frame models with nothing so far in the mid range.

@@jan_wegener I think crop more and more will just be a setting on high megapixel sensors. Any crop mode above say 12 to 15 megapixels is already useful. My A7R4 has 28mp in crop, my A1 has 21mp in crop and i am guessing the A7IV will have 14.7mp in crop thats a very handy mode at times.

Great video, still shooting with 5D4 with 100-400mm Mk2 and 500mmF4 lenses at the moment and I am very satisfied with this kit. Will probably upgrade eventually, mainly because any new lenses are going to be RF. Would have upgraded already if the new 100-500mm had been a 100-600mm as I find the 100-400 is just too short. When I way up the cost to upgrade to 100-500mm to gain 100mm and from what I’m thinking is a gain in keeper rate and usability camera wise ( debatable ) it’s a big price jump with the same old chestnut of diminishing returns for a lot more money.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Upgrading and the cost of upgrading is always a tricky issue. I personally like the 100-500 only being 500, because it makes it much smaller and an ideal second lens with my 600. R5 +100-500 has probably the best keeper rate of any combo I have used to date

The R6 will happily focus on wet objects instead of the birds. It helps to re-focus using a spot focus point on the bird. BTW the 7D2 can be pretty silent when running in silent mode. The big advantage of the crop camera is reach. I have no plans to buy a R5 in order to use it in crop mode.

Hey Jan...........loved the video. I literally switched from Nikon to Sony 2 days ago. In the first two days of shooting, and not really even knowing what I'm doing with the gear, I'm getting stuff that was impossible for the DSLR gear to capture. Flight stuff you wouldn't believe..........small in the frame subjects against confusing backgrounds and the camera just stays on them no matter what I do. It's science fiction and has changed my life. I can't wait until I actually understand the gear, have it set up properly and get some experience using it. Sorry to say it but the DSLR will soon be going the way of cassette tapes, betamax video and film cameras. The Sony a1 camera and their dedicated mirrorless 600 f/4 G master lens are a sick combination for bird photography!

canon r6 and r5 along with many mirrorless systems use either a combo of contrast and phase detection or just phase detection for their focusing systems. Usually the main focus problem I've seen with working with mirrorless cameras is that there are so many focus points that it can easily miss a target. How I tend to get around this is by setting the initial af point for tracking then use the screen/joystick (depending on model) and move the focus box over the zone in question. Works much better imo.

Interesting observation, although I never felt like my R5 really misses any targets. I would've thought more fields help it to be more precise
@megadjc192
@megadjc192 3 жыл бұрын
@@jan_wegener Well, what I mean is that with probability the likelihood of the focus system improperly tracking something goes up. So in reality there will be more times when there is noise that the phase detectors pick up that can misinterpret the shape or pattern it's seeing. I could have specified that it isn't missing focusing easily but rather is a behavior to be expected to happen from time to time with so many phase detector arrays in the sensor. That is at least what my experience suggests. I think the issue will resolve itself over time as cameras gain more processing power to deal with more autofocus points in the future. They probably will release some more firmware with optimization in this regard. Also, I am in the school of thought of constraining my autofocus points if possible, and I believe that will greatly reduce the errors.

thing is, for the collimators in a dslr, everything is tack sharp and it knows what's in front of what because they are split appart. so the camera can know the depth of the scene. now on a dual pixel af on a mirrorless camera, it sees the scene through a very shallow depth of field and if somethign seems sharp and nothing seems to be closer in that range, it's considered in focus till a certain threshold were the camera is gonna hunt again.

Thanks for this interesting and informative discussion. I switched fully to mirrorless about a year ago, after experiencing the advantages of tne Sony A7R-series. Now I am back to Canon with the R5 and R6 and the marvelous R-lenses. Another advantage of the mirrorless cameras (focus system) I love, is the ability to have pin sharp focus on the border of the frame. That was impossible on my Canon cameras in the past (Canon 5DII and III, Canon 5DsR and even 5DIV. If you did not use the central focus point on those SLR-Cameras, the area of interest was always a little out of focus. I hated this, especially when using a fast prime (85mm F1.2) on a portrait shoot.

Great video guys and Duade congrats on getting the 100-500, I love mine on my R6. I think my only long term concern with the R5 and R6 is the fact that you cannot change the internal battery since it is soldered onto the system board. I got quite used to swapping these batteries out on my DSLR's over the years. To Jan's point about the EVF and not having to take your eye off it....it really is a game changer once you adapt to it. Since the last firmware update for the R6 and the 100-500 the manual focus override can be very helpful when the camera front or back focuses and looses the bird. I suspect more firmware updates will hopefully make things even better overall for the bodies and the RF lenses.

Another great video Jan. I'm using the Canon R5 paired with the 100-500 RF, and so far loving the combination. I jumped from the 5DIV and 100-400 ii combination, sometimes using the 1.4 x iii converter. Got some great pics with the 5DIV, but as you point out, I really miss not being able to look through a pentaprism viewfinder to get an idea of framing without turning the camera on! This is where my battery usage is taking a hit! Wouldn't go out without 2 batteries when using my R5 for a day that's for sure. It annoys me that Canon batteries in general have always been poor compared to Nikon. Can't comment on mirroless Nikon models, as I'm fully committed to Canon now. I'm sure they could make stronger battery packs, but to me, it seems they do this to boost spare battery sales? As for the camera itself, it's a superb piece of kit, as are the RF lenses. I've got 3 higher end RF lenses, then the 800mm F11 which is way better than I thought it was going to be in lower light, and bought the RF nifty 50mm F1.8 as a candid walkabout lens, and I'm even amazed by the quality of that for the small price. The R5 black out isn't really noticeable as you point out, one slight problem I get (or see) in high burst mode is, the image seems to jump across the viewfinder slightly! Hard to explain that one properly, but obviously if it's a bird in flight it's moving across the frame, but a fixed point in the background seems to move across the frame too. Probably doesn't make a lot of sense, as my explanation is harder to describe. Anyway, do you have any plans on buying the R3 when it's released? Because I will really be tempted myself.
@jan_wegener

I think at some point the small form factor stops the batteries to be much more powerful. That's why the R3 will have different batteries. I am not sure yet if I buy one, might want to see a few more specs, but I will definitely test one out and make a few videos

This is a very interesting video. I have to give it to you, I've had the R5 for almost 2 months now and it is a fantastic camera. The images it renders simply look amazing. If people are just starting out now or if I were to do it all over again, I would still go straight to mirrorless without a question. As far as birding goes, the real-time tracking is just priceless especially when it comes to BIF shots which used to be such a challenge if not pain with DSLRs. The only thing I would say is in situations when I am trying to shoot birds in thick foliage having to almost thread the needle if you will, I would still prefer to go with a DSLR. For one, I still prefer looking through the DSLR viewfinder which is far more dynamic and more precise. For starters, for some reason the settings of the diopter on the R5 is just not quite wide-ranging enough to cater to the short-sightedness of my right eye whereas on the 90D it was just perfect. Also, when shooting in APS-C crop mode, the little square spot focusing overlay is too big to be precise as compared to when it is in full frame mode. And since we are on the subject of APS-C crop mode, having come off an APS-C DSLR, I find myself shooting the R5 in APS-C crop mode pretty much full time as I am not used to losing so much focal length, in my case 360mm on my Sigma 150-600mm. This is a problem because the R5's sensor is simply not high res enough for the camera to be used in that way when it can only give you 17 MP of resolution in crop mode. The only thing I have a major issue with as you know is still the RF 100-500mm. I just don't like external zooms and it is massively overpriced at double the price of the Sony FE 200-600mm G and being 100mm shorter too is simply ridiculous. While I find the A1 to be overpriced, if the specs of the coming Sony cameras look good such as the A7R V for example then I could see myself trading in my R5 to migrate over to Sony and grab the FE 200-600mm G and shoot with it all day long. With Canon, I just have zero option given the fact they have decided to go with this chunky and stubby design language with their RF lenses, in other words Canon will probably never make an internal zoom again which means it would only be a matter of time when I will be forced to buy the RF 100-500mm if I can't move across to Sony.

I am looking forward to the day when you will buy a 100-500 and let me know how you like it after using it for a few weeks :D Yes, it does feel the automated AF of the R5 is the game changer, but at times it can be hard to focus on something specific. Yes, the step from 1.6 crop to FF can feel a bit strange for a while. I think the Af field appears larger, because you have less pixels in crop mode. Same reason it's larger oin the R6 Thanks for sharing your experiences

DSLR’s still have ten years of service life, but lately I know a 1DX and a 1DXm2 which have died, one upgraded to the Mk3 and the other is likely going to wait for the the R3. I have an XT4 and R5, but I have no problem recommending a D850, 7Dm2, 90D, D500 or even a Sony A99. However I think the real magic of mirrorless is in crop sensor cameras. The Olympus EM1X and 300 F4 (600mm) is truly incredible, and now Fuji has a tiny 70-300 (140-450 5.6) compatible with the 1.4 and 2x teleconverters is mind blowingly small and affordable! I’ve used Canon SLRs since 1996. Of course film to begin with. (Eos 500n followed by 2 Eos 50 bodies). When digital cameras came along, there was no way I could afford a full frame Canon, and APS-C meant a crop factor that I didn’t like, and that too was too costly to my liking. So I bought inexpensive Olympus compacts, and when I got the Olympus SP 510-UZ in 2006, I completely stopped using film because the 7.1MP gave far better image quality, and the shutter button lag was finally gone. Then in 2012 I finally “bit the sour apple” and bought a Canon Eos 550D. It only ticked 2 out of my 5 boxes, but the price was good. Since then I’ve upgraded first to the 70D and later to the 90D, and I’ve bought a lot of lenses for them. Mostly crop sensor lenses, and as I still find the image quality of APS-C amazing, I’d be a darn fool to buy full frame now! And many of the advantages of mirrorless are also found in the 90D, like flip screen and completely silent shooting (in live view). And I love the fact that my Sigma 150-600c is the equivalent of 240-960mm! So your 800mm? Bah! ;-) Will I ever buy mirrorless? Well, I hope not. Down at the economy end of the Canon range at the moment but as you say a possibility of picking up a DSLR upgrade in the near future, looking at both your photos with the R5's it looks a fantastic piece of kit.👍

Fantastic discussion and really useful. I have the R5 and 100 to 500 lens and have started shooting handheld video, although I don't understand the settings! I would love it if both of you did videos on shooting video of birds. One issue I have sometimes, bright days, is overexposure and I can't seem to be able to figure out how to stop that. Also, do you both shoot in PAL? Or NTSC?
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
I shoot PAL, cause we live in a PAL country. If you're in the US, NTSC is better (light flickering). Outside it doesn't really matter. I made a video about shooting video a while ago. What mode are you using?

@@jan_wegener we have PAL here in the UK too. I am using manual and have set C3 to work on the button so I can switch quickly from stills. I have set auto ISO for video but am confused about that as there are 2 auto ISO settings. I will go have another look at your video about video to see if I missed anything

Great video as always. A question.... I have thought about this, but not tested it yet. The I.S. in the R lenses works with the I.S. in the camera body.... does this also apply to the EF lenses + R% with the adapter? Canon should give you royalties.... I bought an R5 because of your excellent videos... broke now, but taking great photos.

It does. IS and IBIS work together on the lenses where it's available, but you get greater benefits when you combine RF IS lenses and IBIS Glad you are enjoying your R5

Waiting for a APSC RF Camera (something like 7D successor) paired with 100-500RF. Currently using M6 II with Sigma 150-600C and struggling with “in focus, out of focus, slight in focus,...” slowly I’m getting tired of that behavior...

Yes, that can be frustrating. Something you won't have on the 100-500 and an R5 for instance. If and when we will see an R7 is an interesting question

I’m one of those waiting on the Nikon z9. I currently am shooting with a D850 and D500 bodies with 300 500 and 600 prime lenses. I’ll probably slowly move to mirrorless.

I'm all in for DSLR in bird photography, but the R5 is horrid if you use flash as your primary light source. It significantly underexposes. The advantages of the EVF are also less valuable. I still much prefer my 5DIV for flash work.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener 3 жыл бұрын
I can't disagree with that. Mirrorless and flash isn't fun to use together because it kills off the exposure simulation. Although that doesn't matter as much in your case when you use flash as main light I suppose. I always use manual flash and exposure, so the exposure is fine at least.
