Everyone judging & dragging her for the things she wants: 1) she is high & not in the most sound state for decision making 2) she feels helpless & hopeless in her situation & wants things that make her feel normal & happy, even though they’re not “necessities” it is understandable. Does she have a victim mentality? Likely yes. Many addicts have an external locus of control & frequently view themselves as victims to their circumstances, so it would not be surprising. (* but this should not be seen as a reason to devalue her or her wants. We should not look down on anyone just because we utilize different coping mechanisms or have a different outlook) Also, Those dependent on substances often don’t have the best track record for making great decisions, so again, makes sense why she is prioritizing things she wants over things she may need. It probably also feels easier to ask for & more attainable than “help me get into rehab” or “can I sleep on your couch” or something. Additionally, if she’s turning tricks then she probably thinks she will get paid more if she’s “prettier” & thus happier as a result. Let’s be real tho, we all WANT things we don’t need so her desires for body jewelry & wanting to go the mall aren’t absurd... yes, they may not be what she needs, & I’m not saying anyone should or shouldn’t give her those things, but the desire for them is completely human & understandable. After all, aren’t we all trying to do things that make us feel better & increase our happiness? That’s essentially how addiction starts in the first place...

This is by far one of the realest responses yet. I don't think anyone could of explained better. Yes we all know, even she, herself, knows what she needs, but like us all we have wants. In a perfect world it always easier said then done. Of course I would love nothing more then to see these girls change their lives around for the better. At the same time I'm not going to be little them and judge them anymore then they already do to themselves. At the end of the day they are human just like the rest of us. We all have a story, good or bad right or wrong or all of the above. With that being said just know we all have sinned, we just all sin differently.

This is an interesting thought/comment, not because of what it says about Jana, or any other person in need that has received charity, but because of what it says about those doing the giving. What that seems to mean is that if the receiver is not perceived to be 'grateful enough' for what they have been given, it seems the giver is offended because they think their efforts were a waste of time. The message that is implied there is "Earn what I want to give you by showing me you appreciate it the amount that I deem necessary and in the way I want you to so that I feel good about myself for helping you". So, really, if the giver is offended by a perceived lack of appreciation then it seems silly to pretend that those people are being charitable merely to help Jana (or anyone else), and more likely that they are doing it to ultimately make THEMSELVES feel good about themselves for being helpful and a good person. My point is, if certain conditions must be met for one to behave charitably... is it really charity? Isnt it more of a transaction? "I'll give you X if you act like Y". That doesnt seem very selfless to me, which is at the core of charitable giving. To expect nothing in return. Now, do not confuse this with me saying people shouldn't be appreciative or grateful or polite or mannerly, I am all for that, so that isn't what I'm trying to say. I'm just saying it is something to think about and that others' actions should not dictate how kind you are. I just think it is important that when we feel ourselves making judgments or assumptions that we should remember to look inward at ourselves and examine why WE are perceiving something that way. Our judgments often say more about us than they do about the person we are judging. Again, just something to think about. I also want to say that what Jana likely needs (& many others on the street and/or battling addiction) is not body jewelry or music or a mall shopping trip nor even food or clothes or shelter, but she needs structure, compassion, support, and therapy. Most importantly she needs to WANT recovery more than her drug of choice, and no one can give her that but her. While it may seem like an easy and obvious choice from the outside, that really is no small feat; not because of withdrawals or lack of resources, but because their drug of choice makes them feel better (temporarily) than anything ever has. It is their confidant and strongest coping mechanism and rehabilitation requires the person to give that up at once and simultaneously deal with and FEEL everything that the drug was numbing. When you've worked so hard to avoid pain, that first step can seem insurmountable, especially when the benefits of recovery work in the opposite manner of drug use. Drugs are instant gratification: feel good now, hurt from the consequences later. Recovery is delayed gratification: hurt now; feel good later. Recovery is also painful because the person is being asked to give up their safety net while also going through a very condensed and sped-up period of introspection and self growth, and as we all know, growing hurts. For those saying she needs to see the harsh comments and face reality, well, I do agree that being aware of reality is important for recovery, and sometimes that looks like hitting "rock bottom", but sometimes that does nothing to help. Hitting rock bottom won't do anything for the person if they do not see a way OUT of rock bottom. That is the key. Hope. Why do people go to college? In the hopes of a better career and income and a better future. Why do people enter relationships? In the hopes they will increase their future happiness. Why do we wake up everyday or try to achieve our goals? In the hope of having a better tomorrow/future Why do we go to the doctor? In the hopes of feeling better, being healthy, living longer, etc Why do people use drugs? In the hopes of feeling better. For those thinking I'm encouraging you to coddle people by being hopeful or optimistic or something, I'm not. However, don't confuse compassion for coddling and don't confuse "tough love" and honesty with simply lacking tact. There are different ways to coat the same pill. I'm not saying you shouldnt be realistic or honest or offer constructive criticism, go ahead, I am just saying that perhaps you should ask yourself what hope and solution you are offering alongside it. Because hope is what keeps every one of us going every day and the absence of it can devastate a life. We all want to minimize our pain and increase our happiness. That's it. It's the way we each go about attaining it that differs. (I apologize for this essay lol I just thought it was important. Maybe someone needed to see it idk)

Just a view from the other side. A very close friend of mine dated Jana for YEARS and they both battled multiple drug/alcohol addictions together. She started heroin without him and he hated it and begged and pleaded her to stop until eventually he was weak and finally tried it. Jana would use him when it was convenient for him and then spit him out. I can’t tell you how many times she nearly had him killed because she set him up or left him stranded. He eventually tried to get sober and wanted her to do the same so badly. He’s dead now. Died on my ex boyfriends kitchen floor. Relapsed after being clean for 6 months. I know it was his choice to do heroin. I know that. But he wanted so badly to get sober and she never ONCE tried and if she did it was to manipulate him back into her web. I have a very hard time feeling bad for her but I do hope she makes it out of that lifestyle and does right by her mistakes and her child(ren I think she has 2), and her mother. Im sorry but prayers really do nothing, detoxes and rehabs should be free, medical care in the states shouldn't be so expensive and non violent addicts shouldn't be getting locked up for being caught with drugs that are for intent to use they should be ordered to court mandated rehabs for no shorter than 6 months to a year, we spend so much on prisons and police salaries i think we can make a budget for this aswell

My mom was a drug addict, doing pretty much anything for a fix. when I was 5 I remember living in a homeless shelter with my mom. luckily my father got clean that same year and has done a great job being a single parent since. I will never touch a drug. I will finish college. I surround myself with the right people. and soon enough I’ll be stable enough to support myself and be totally independent. It’s not easy but it’s possible. your past doesn’t define you, you have no limits, you can create your own story. I hope these women do get help, addiction is really a terrible disease....

I can SO relate to her when I was in active addiction.. I know people are judging her saying things like, “Omg wouldn’t we ALL like to just blow a bunch of money 🙄🙄..” But I know what she meant .. When you’re living in that HELL of addiction, & you know people are constantly judging you, not to mention you already think lower of yourself than anyone could already think of you.. & 100% of your time is focused on getting money to get the drugs.. cuz the main goal is to NOT BE SICK.. it’s NOT about getting high.. it stops being about getting high years ago.. it’s literally about you CANNOT go into withdrawal/dopesick/detox..whatever you wanna call it. Anyway, & you never get to do normal things like go out to dinner, go shopping, go see a movie, etc. & NO, you don’t want or expect pity or sympathy from ANYONE.. cuz you know that you put yourself in that situation.. but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t completely SUCK!! So yes, I can totally relate to how she felt when saying all of those things. & people judging her for saying that, is exactly why there will *ALWAYS* be a stigma when it comes to addiction. Today is my 500 days clean from an almost decade long opiate/heroin/fentanyl addiction. & if I can FINALLY get help to get clean & stay clean, I have hope that anyone can!! I really want to like Jana, but there is just something about her that is extremely off-putting. She comes across as entitled, spoiled, and really rude. Her facial expressions are strange. One minute she's boo-hooing, and the next minute she'll have this snide, smirky expression on her face that comes across as terribly insincere. I don't know, I just feel like she needs to humble herself and realize that the least she can do is be more polite and realistic when she is dealing with people that are kind enough to spend their hard earned money to do anything at all for a complete stranger. Hopefully she'll get a moment of clarity one day and will realize she does in fact have choices and doesn't have to live the rest of her life as a victim. She has a lot of things going for her that most of these girls do not have that Tom interviews. Had to watch this twice before commenting and still not sure how I feel. She wants a lot of frivolous stuff and not things that can keep her warm through the coming cold months or food. Almost everyone asked has said clothes, hats, gloves, coats, boots, blankets etc. Hers are the strangest requests I've ever heard. Actually she doesn't look bad and is dressed pretty stylish. She did say she has nothing yet didn't ask for clothes except scarfs but I think fashion ones like she has on. Seems what ever someone might gift her (and most of the others), will be lost, stolen, sold or left behind and that is upsetting to those who donate especially those who don't have much to donate to begin with but still send something from the heart. There are WANTS (we all have those) and NEEDS. She better work on the needs before winter hits hard. Wants go on the back burner. .

Been where this girl and others like her are. I had a home but noooo utilities at all and knew any day it would be taken. Little things like clean clothes and body wash makeup etc......they help you feel HUMAN when your life is so dehumanizing everything AROUND you dehumanizes you. Me too. Still struggling myself. Not homeless and I’ve stabled on only going weekly to a clinic, just trying to get off a low dose of benzos now. I go through WDs up to 2 weeks of sheer terror and not wanting to live, that when I get them again, I want the feeling gone. I know better, but my health has declined, I have my daughter half the week, father has her other 3 days, not easy. I’m okay today. Sick but alive in a nice home, with my daughter, dogs laying next to me, and a great hardworking man. I WILL DO IT💯 God Bless these woman and anyone suffering

I was also turned off by this interview like everyone else. It is obvious that she is high, most addicts use to “ escape “ & not have to deal with things. I honestly think she hasn’t fully accepted the situation she is in & maybe has normalized it . So in my opinion her asking for things like body spray, piercings, gift cards, etc. is her way to try to make herself seem “ normal “ like everyone else. I can imagine asking for things like food, shelter, clothes, hygiene products, etc. could be a bit embarrassing for some . Her asking for those things would mean she would have to accept & realize the situation she is in. Not sure if she is using that as a coping mechanism, or if she is just in denial. I could be completely wrong, either way she needs our prayers.

I don’t think she’d stay in the rehab for long, the first time she needed to score, and couldn’t, she’d be gone. She needs to show willing to some degree like attending NA meetings before some of the rehabs will even think of taking her. While she is still active in her addiction she’s nowhere near ready, and she could, potentially, destroy other clients newly won fledgling sobriety at the rehab facility. Unfortunately she hasn’t hit rock bottom yet, any of the material items she wants, - except the personal hygiene things - are as good as money in the bank to an addict, they can and will be sold when the need arises to raise the money for drugs. That, unfortunately, is the nature of the beast.

I would love to get some music to this girl, I’ve got some body jewelry too! I feel for her, she is obviously trying to find her way back to who she truly is (and that’s ravaged by drugs) I know because it happened to me. Drugs took everything from me. Music. Body jewelry, tattoos all those are things that give a person a sense of identity and sure she needs a lot more help than that absolutely but I truly believe she may just claw her way out of this with some of the things that make her feel better. And if not at least it will bring her some comfort on the streets. Does a drug addict only matter when they WANT help? This type of thinking is the problem in the first place.
