Wow, what an emotionally taxing moment it was for Timothy Dalton. Just wow and it is not overacting no matter what others say because Rochester was a man who had very complex emotional makeup given the fact that he was not favored by his father and then trapped in that kind of marriage. He was never the calm and collect character but more of the gentrified version of Heathcliff when it comes to loving someone. The Bronte sisters portrayed emotional men in their novels so no wonder their books were seen as controversial at that time aside from the fact that their women characters were also unusual for that era.

@sarahalessa784 жыл бұрын
I always interpreted Jane's unusual composer after the "wedding" as attempt to prevent a breakdown. But it almost seems as if she is dissociating after the shock and that seems so natural and true to her character. With all the excitement of the last weeks, the death of her aunt, her beeing in love for the first time, fearing to lose him to another woman, preparing for the wedding and having these horrible "nightmares" and all of this after her quiet life in the boarding school. And then the terrifying discovery of the mad bride, of being almost lured into a life of sin, of realising she must leave the man she loves. I can't imagine Jane Eyre behaving any other way. I don't think she isn't passionate enough. Real shock and heartbreak is often beyond crying and screaming. She seems broken. And her silence captures that so well. I think I prefer it to other versions in which Jane is more dramatic in this scene.

This is fabulous story of Jane Eyre acted by Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton as Jane and Edward. So much close to the story of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Loved it especially this episode. Thank you for sharing.

I already posted on this a year ago but something brought me back here. I remember sitting in 9th grade English class and we were watching this. I don't know what the other kids were doing but I was sitting there trying not to cry in front of them. I thought she did the right thing by leaving, she could not be with him because he was still married to his wife (even though she was crazy). It's the classic angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other : The angel says "Do the right thing and leave", the devil is saying "That man cares for you so be with him despite the circumstances." Now that I'm older have I changed my views on this? No, I haven't. But there will always be a broken heart, and mine's been broken many times.

Missing scene from the book: The shopping trip to Millcote. Jane is very uncomfortable with Rochester showering gifts on her, which results in her writing to her uncle, who unknown to her, knows Mr. Mason. She writes about her upcoming wedding in the letter.

How did the letter get to Madeira and Mr. Mason get back to Thornfield all within a month
@barbarabrown79743 жыл бұрын
From what I could determine, it would have been tight. Madeira isn't as far as the new world/Jamaica, where Mason is from. It's an island that's part of Portugal. A quick Internet search stated that a sea voyage by sailing ship from England was roughly a week, depending on conditions. But it would have taken a few days for the letter to get to a seafaring port, so maybe a week and a halfish? That's three to four weeks round trip, and as their engagement was four weeks, that's tight.

When I first saw this scene, I thought Dalton wildly overacted, lol.. Now I only think he does at the very end. It's a multi-faceted and at times quite subdued performance, actually. I love details like the sweat on his forehead, which makes him even more believable as a man who sees what is most important to him slip through his fingers, and is desperately looking for ways to stop it.
@OreadNYC4 жыл бұрын
Actually, if you read the book, you'll discover that Dalton really didn't overact in this scene. Bronte says that Rochester is sobbing when he utters the line "my love...my life!" Bronte also describes Rochester during this scene as being almost wild in his desperation to the point that he threatens violence against her (a line which the adaptations prefer to leave out).

Well Timothy played this scene exactly like novel, actually in novel this scene is way more dramatic and it's really difficult for any actor to perform. Infact in many adaptations either the actors choose to play this scene in safe manner by rather avoiding yelling like in 1944, 1973 version, while some of them just overdo like 1997 with Ciaran hinds ( totally messed up) and let's not talk about 2006 🙄. 2011 is wonderful overall but then they changed many dialogues, it was rather modified so that actors can perform with ease. Now the scene in 1983 is taken as it is from novel, and as I said this scene is way more dramatic in novel so the outcome will come somewhat theatrical only. I think that Timothy Dalton really does a wonderful job, although he messes up in last part, I cannot judge his crying because I have never seen any man crying so I don't know 🤷, but still I loved his acting. Regarding Zelah Clarke I think she was trying to show Jane's mental state that how much she is torn apart but yet she is trying to keep herself strong, and is trying to avoid herself from giving up because at this moment she gave up herself then she will live her life in guilt of becoming his mistress, a thing owned by him. Though I agree that zelah falls bit flat here as well, but she is not totally emotionless, her pale face shows her condition. But still I think she would have cried a bit.

It's really true. Women REALLY LOVE men who suffer! We are suckers for the "tall, dark & tortured. " What girl doesn't want to step in & love a man like Rochester & try to save em, all at the same time? And the men know it, cuz it's a weakness in women! 🤣

Timothy Dalton IS Rochester!He brought the character to life and truly there can be no better mr Rochester but him.However,i would like to see Joaquin Phoenix play the role one day,he would be great.His performances have always been strong and passionate.I can almost see him act in this scene and imagine the despair in his green haunting eyes!!!!Pls consider him for the part!!!!!

Phoenix is a brilliant actor but he is American. This classic story is so thoroughly (Englishy) please do not wish anybody but one of our fine British actors in the role of Rochester. After all we do have the very finest of actors in the world and who could have delivered the part better than Timothy Dalton.

British actors are the best!! All of them! Dalton is perfect! i would chose Alan Rickman to portray Rochester. only British could bring those emotions, those sentiments and mind and passion. America is little bit Hollywood and artificial, no offense pls

I knew this story sinces years only by some film adaptions (Other than Wuthering Heights), which we watched halfassed, als entertaining period story about a young orphan, which loves a old and than blind man with a lunatic. More a ghost story whoch remembered me to Hitchocks Rebecca. After none of these adaptions like Zeffirelli or Wells or 1973 and even 2006 (the BBC came not in Germany TV) about decades I was beware, that this should a story of love between 2 complexe main characters, because Rochester seemed only as second role, passive object of her emotions. Never the development of love seemed evident, not even the betrayel aspect by bigamism. Irgendeine Beziehung. And only her feelings on the end in returning, as liberation out of the opressive and annoying St John behavior. Last I saw casually, more by not could sleeping in a grief phase the 2011 version, which made me aware, that there could be more in that story, which I liked only for its poetic optical atmosfere, but the monoton, not developing characterization and the devote Jane me disturbs. Also a friend meant, 2011 is not the best adaption but not mentioned others. So I began to watch the other characterization. First Hint/Morton, which I liked both, but I was aborred by its loud also monotone characterization, though Morton me seemed later more selfconscious and humorful like in the book than all the others. But here the dramaturgical logic lacked and as I stated the fidelity of the original intentions in the book, like also 2004. So I came to this version, and I was so flashed by the acting skills but mainly I understood firstly that not the ghosty Lunatic or the development of Jane is the main theme, but the love story itselfs and that Rochester is the real, complexe mainrole. I was emotionally so roused by the emotionality and also sensuality of this only seemly reserved adaption, that I overcame after 2 years my impetrification because of too many bereavements. Nor I didnt know the book, and that this stressing of Rochester and the firstly restraint Jane is not the invention of this version. But after reading the book, also with its for me disturbing religious main theme, I was aware, the various intentions of the book and how original till each phrase and intelligent and perfectly casted this film is, only without these overcoming religious reasons. and since this the book, which I reread now, is one of my favorites. And this version with the speeching and acting firework makes me addicted and after the 10th looking stunned, as a proffessional theatre person, how ecceptional Dalton and also Clarke is. Each kind of breath is on the right place. But this is only ovious in this original english version. The german Synchronisation with untalented speakers sounds more like a kitsch soupopera and loses this emotionality and evidence.

So much is made of Zelah Clarke in this miniseries,,,,, But honestly in my opinion its Dalton that caries this entire story, together with all the emotional responses his acting solicits from the audience. What a brilliant performance he gives, not to mention the fact that Timothy has a ton of dialogue to memorise, unlike Zelah. Timothy Dalton is one hec of a talent. I have lost count of how many times I keep coming back to watch him. Many actors have played the role of Rochester. There is no better portrayal than Daltons.
