I was an Air Force Brat living in England in 1957. I was 12 at my first reading. I spent most of that first reading whilst sitting in an apple tree. I have seen movies and I have re read Jane’s story so many times. I am now 78 and Jane and I are old friends. I hardly sleep so I listen to Ms Klett read. I may drift off, but I always come back to Jane’s rich story. Thank you, Ms Klett for doing such a fine job. I envy readers hearing ‘Jane Eyre’ for the first time.

Im no longer embarrassed to admit that this book helped me learn to read. I found this book years ago when my children were first born. I knew the importance of reading to babies and young children so i did. I listen to the ease and the cadence of Elizabeth Klett reading this book and adapted my reading style to hers, starting with very simple kids books but also reading Aesops fables and Grimms fairytales. I am now capable of reading out loud and smoothly. I struggled for years and barely finished high school with the secret that i could barely read. And when i did read it was choppy, confusing, frustrating, id get stuck on syllables and even after reading an entire paragraph - i had no idea what i read. Now at age 43 i can admit i learned to read at 30 and both my children are honor students in middle school and my son won the state spelling bee ❤ both won gold at the science fair. And i volunteer at elementary school to help struggling children learn to read too.

chapter 6 continuation bc it's cut-off "But I feel this, Helen; I must dislike those who, whatever I do to please them, persist in disliking me; I must resist those who punish me unjustly. It is as natural as that I should love those who show me affection, or submit to punishment when I feel it is deserved." "Heathens and savage tribes hold that doctrine, but Christians and civilised nations disown it." "How? I don't understand." "It is not violence that best overcomes hate-nor vengeance that most certainly heals injury." "What then?" "Read the New Testament, and observe what Christ says, and how He acts; make His word your rule, and His conduct your example." "What does He say?" "Love your enemies; bless them that curse you; do good to them that hate you and despitefully use you." "Then I should love Mrs. Reed, which I cannot do; I should bless her son John, which is impossible." In her turn, Helen Burns asked me to explain, and I proceeded forthwith to pour out, in my own way, the tale of my sufferings and resentments. Bitter and truculent when excited, I spoke as I felt, without reserve or softening. Helen heard me patiently to the end: I expected she would then make a remark, but she said nothing. "Well," I asked impatiently, "is not Mrs. Reed a hard-hearted, bad woman?" "She has been unkind to you, no doubt; because you see, she dislikes your cast of character, as Miss Scatcherd does mine; but how minutely you remember all she has done and said to you! What a singularly deep impression her injustice seems to have made on your heart! No ill-usage so brands its record on my feelings. Would you not be happier if you tried to forget her severity, together with the passionate emotions it excited? Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity or registering wrongs. We are, and must be, one and all, burdened with faults in this world: but the time will soon come when, I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies; when debasement and sin will fall from us with this cumbrous frame of flesh, and only the spark of the spirit will remain,-the impalpable principle of light and thought, pure as when it left the Creator to inspire the creature: whence it came it will return; perhaps again to be communicated to some being higher than man-perhaps to pass through gradations of glory, from the pale human soul to brighten to the seraph! Surely it will never, on the contrary, be suffered to degenerate from man to fiend? No; I cannot believe that: I hold another creed: which no one ever taught me, and which I seldom mention; but in which I delight, and to which I cling: for it extends hope to all: it makes Eternity a rest-a mighty home, not a terror and an abyss. Besides, with this creed, I can so clearly distinguish between the criminal and his crime; I can so sincerely forgive the first while I abhor the last: with this creed revenge never worries my heart, degradation never too deeply disgusts me, injustice never crushes me too low: I live in calm, looking to the end." Helen's head, always drooping, sank a little lower as she finished this sentence. I saw by her look she wished no longer to talk to me, but rather to converse with her own thoughts. She was not allowed much time for meditation: a monitor, a great rough girl, presently came up, exclaiming in a strong Cumberland accent- "Helen Burns, if you don't go and put your drawer in order, and fold up your work this minute, I'll tell Miss Scatcherd to come and look at it!" Helen sighed as her reverie fled, and getting up, obeyed the monitor without reply as without delay.

Keep going, YOU WILL ;) And if you mean you don't recognize a few of the words/terms (I didn't. Also, some "I knew"--but I wanted to take this opportunity to finally understand solidly, instead of having that shaky, cursory, superficial understanding)--look them up. It's unconscionably easy to do, now that we have search engines. Just commit to making it 15-20 minutes in, within a single session, without giving up. By then, the story will have drawn you in--so that you won't notice the time. It's awful, but the malignant media companies, along with other diabolical entities, have been working diligently and deliberately to erode our ability to concentrate and exercise patience. We modern humans must choose, commit and work to rebuild it. Thankfully, that initial effort pays off exponentially, and in arenas we don't even expect. Good Luck =) Oh, and don't worry if it takes a number of tries. Well live hectic lives. Building healthy, new habits, often requires trial and error...

Just listened to a few chapters so far. It seems Jane Eyre and Harry Potter had a lot in common at the age of 10.

If y’all waited to VERY last minute my advice is to spark note the insignificant chapters and x2 the significant chapters just sayin bc I got 6 books to read this summer and of course my last one is a 20hr Audio book and even with x2 speed I still gotta read 3-4hrs a day

While I admire Jane's eagerness to forgive and the progress she has made as a character, I will forever resent Mrs. Reed. Had I been in her place, I'm not sure I would be able to do the same. Anyway, this is a lovely book and I very much enjoyed the narration. You have an incredible voice that can keep a listener as easily distracted as myself attentive for a good five hours or so. :)

I would be remiss if I did not bring it to the attention of person or persons who were instrumental and central in bringing Jane Eyre to life in such such an exquisites rendition that I returned to it time and again with increased appetite and expectations. Thank you.

Not only she used old words that are no longer used often, but she used some of the words in the 19th century sense, which are different from today's. That and the constructions of many sentences are complicated and bizarre by today's standards. I read chapter 1 and 2, and that is what I felt. I had to consult dictionaries and search the web to find out the meanings. I don't think I will be able to understand the content by listening to it.

I am reading this book now. I am really enjoying it. I was inspired to read it when I saw an Episode of King of Queens and Doug Heffernan was trying to read it. He only read a couple of sentences but that was enough for me.

Austen's Fanny Price wishes she had half as much heart, courage, fortitude, bravery and morality as Bronte's Jane Eyre demonstrates. Jane, like Fanny, is "frail", poor and dependent. But unlike Fanny, Jane is not a victim.
