Very interesting approach that is. Personally I find difficult to accept what happened during the romantic era. I can't explain why😔 but I sense oscurantism and discipline. Maybe is my excuse not to want to look into it easily. Well my brief is that women were still longing for a romantic marriage. Madness in the loft. A movie come to mind deep. REBECCA. Burning houses. Vendictive deeds. Dark secrets. Passion of love unreciprocated. Back to the Middle Ages? Why was that? A century before everything was almost lighted and revolutionary. Was romanticism perhaps a century of involution?

Yep. I agree. Bertha represents some sort of worst case scenario of what could happen if you're totally dependent on someone 'superior' (i.e. a husband in Victorian society)Regarding the Christian morals in the novel I would also suggest she stands for the disastrous outcomings of putting lust over reason.

Don't forget the cunning of other males involved. Rochester's father & older brother arranged the marriage (to get her dowry) and shipped Edward to the West Indies. Richard and his father convinced Edward she was a good catch, letting him only see her, but not talk to her. And they kept the madness of the mother hidden.
