The way Perry sings this song, guts me. It's as if he is directly channeling the soul/s of those who endure a specific type forlorn loneliness. I may have heard that it was written about a homeless, mentally ill woman, and that is exactly the spirit he is a conduit for. So sorrowful and exquisitely beautiful.

I lost my sweet Savannah Jane 3 years ago. My heart breaks every single day. She was a beautiful soul and a hell of an artist. No one wants to be an addict. Bad things happen and they can't process it so they self medicate which leads to more bad things happening until one day they don't want to be here anymore. Momma misses you my sweet Savannah Jane 💜

I have no idea why this is one of my favourite songs of all time. Its two chords. Steel drums (????wtf) acoustic guitars no electrics or solos. Repetitive (although I like techno). But I always shout she cant hit lol. Perrys voice is sublime, absolutely spot on. I was a student when this came out and went to plenty of alternative clubs and gigs but only heard it years later. But I hadn't - it hit a massive note of nostagia. It was a forgotten song. I must have heard it over and over but not remembered in those drunken hazy days. I caught my daughter (18) playing it to one of her mates recently - proud dad moment. Sometimes I play it on repeat for hours :) - love the live versions also better. A fuc*ing brilliant amazing song
