The story of Richard III and the Princes in the Tower is one of the notorious mysteries in English history. Was Richard a tyrant who killed his nephews, or an innocent, believing he was simply the best candidate to take the throne? Today, we’ll walk you through Richard’s history, as well as go over some theories of what happened to the princes.
I wanted to make a re-creation of Richard, who we have more information on. But, I also wanted to give the boys a face, even though source material for their appearances is next to none.
Let’s start with Richard - there are no portraits of Richard surviving today that were made in his own lifetime. However, unlike the princes, researchers have located the lost body of Richard III, which allowed us to get a glimpse of the real man that we don’t get with other monarchs.
Phillipa Langley is the founder of the Richard III society and the main driving force behind the amazing discovery of Richard’s body under a parking lot in Leicester in 2012. This allowed researchers to learn more about Richard’s true appearance, and settle some long-held disputes.
Through genetic analysis, the University of Leicester team determined that he had a 96% chance of having blue eyes, and a 77% chance of having blonde hair, at least in childhood.
This allowed them to tell which portrait of Richard was the most accurate, and it seems to be the earliest version found - this arched portrait made about 30-40 years after his death shows Richard with light eyes and medium-brown hair. This portrait is widely thought to have been copied from one made during his lifetime.
Before the discovery of his body, part of Richard’s legacy had been that he was an evil hunchback with a withered arm - this was mostly spread by Thomas More, who was only 8 years old when Richard died, and was a biased source who had a vested interest in making the Tudor line look more secure.
The researchers found that Richard did have pretty severe scoliosis - in real life this would cause a slight asymmetry, with the left shoulder being held higher than the right. But nothing so severe that it would cause a hunchback or a withered arm, like the rumors spread after his death.
The researchers also found that his bones were quite delicate, which matches up with contemporary accounts that he was a small man, who was surprisingly good in battle despite appearing feminine, in their words.
On the skeleton, there are 8 minor wounds from various weapons and 2 fatal blows at the base of the skull, which aligns with the accounts that he died in the middle of a group of attackers after being de-horsed in battle.
Craniofacial expert Caroline Wilkinson worked on a 3D model of Richard III, which I’ll also reference in my re-creation. In my depiction I’m going to try and kind of thread the needle between the most accurate portrait, and the forensic reconstruction, since the two do have some differences.
Now, let’s talk about the Princes - and this is where it gets more difficult.
For young Edward V, at do have one likeness - this one, from an illuminated manuscript translated by Edward’s guardian and uncle, Anthony Woodville. There is also this stained glass depiction, made after Edward’s death in the 1500s (sparkypus.com/2020/12/26/a-po....

So, what we do know is this: Edward V was a blonde boy of twelve, and that’s about it. It’s reasonable to guess that his younger brother Richard, who was 9 at the time, might look similar to him.
I’ve made some fully artistic depictions of the boys based on the single portrait we have, as well as the features of their relatives.
Some common York facial characteristics were these narrow eyes, solid jaw with strong chin, long straight nose, and medium to small lips. Their parents are both brown or hazel-eyed, so it’s likely they were as well. I’ve essentially borrowed some features from each parent.
So, while the Richard III re-creation is fully grounded in reality, the re-creations of the boys are just artistic, and meant to honor their memory.

The location where they have been discovered, isn't really compatible with the idea that they are the remains of the two boys which have been hidden away quickly. They were buried far too deeply for being relics of the late Middle Ages, and it would not have been possible to dig such a deep hole without anyone wondering what was going on there. And if the princes have been killed, it would've been much easier to get rid of the bodies if the boys were killed outside of the Tower. But even if the skeletons are the remains of the two kids, this doesn't tell us who killed them, when it happened and who gave the order!

Breathtaking work! It’s eerie to see Richard III looking so handsome. But your recreation is so realistic given the sources, I just never saw it before. The beautiful princes, as you see them, are such a realistic blend of their parents, it brings a tear. And even after hundreds of years, a prayer for this family, entrapped in the tragedies of power, like many of Ancient Rome. Thank you for a fascinating presentation!

Wow, this is amazing. Your work is magnificent. I think this might be one of my favorite re-creations from you (alongside Helena of Troy, Anne Boleyn and the emperess Livia). I was never a fan of the blond depictions of Richard III but this nails it perfectly. And I think it's the most plausible hair color for Richard since it's so common that blond children end up with light/medium brown hair, and also matches with the other portraits that portray him with slightly darker hair as well. It's interesting that his eyes ended up kinda similar to Aneurin Barnard's eyes (I got familiar with his story through The White Queen tv show).

I burst into tears seeing the boys come to life. It's so easy to relegate them to another ghost story, another tragedy of history, but to see two clear products of their parents just makes their story so sickeningly real. Richard is so easy to paint as The Bad Guy, and he absolutely was, but seeing him here, seeing the smile, it breaks my heart that such a devoted brother could turn into a monster, because whether directly or indirectly, those boys died because of him. History became horribly, horribly real in this one. I feel like I just watched an unnecessarily gruesome true crime documentary.

Yes, it is a heart breaking tale. Richard was devoted to his brother and I think would have been a good protector had the Woodvilles worked with him rather than hiding his brothers death from him. So preventable had Edward IV let Richard raise his heir and they would have forged a working relationship. I don’t excuse Richard’s probable guilt - whether direct or through Buckingham - but in his mind he was protecting his wife and child, he thought the Woodvilles would destroy him and his family and take their lands. I wonder how many parents, when choosing between saving their own child or saving a niece or nephew, would choose differently to Richard.

This has been a fascinating video and I love the recreations of Richard and the Prince's faces. I've always had an interest in the history of the Plantagenets and Tudors. Your depiction of Richard III makes me think he was probably an approachable man. By all accounts, in the time he was on the throne England was prosperous and a good place to live (shame it's not much like this now).

Without faces, these little kids were no more than a passing footnote or a tragic ghost story. What you did was make them real to us, which makes them matter. Though it's been hundreds of years since they died, these children once had people who must've loved them. It's so painful to hear how unfairly they were robbed of their lives. It seems far more likely that Richard had them killed. There would always be far too many who would rally behind the princes and neither he or his throne would be secure as long as they lived. Richard had absolutely nothing to gain and far too much to lose to allow them to live . He simply couldn't have taken the chance in sparing them.

I dont know. The Ottoman Empire dealt with princes similar by just locking them up in towers and letting them degenerate and live like vegetables. No one can rallye behind long forgotten and locked up vegetables. With all the intrigues and coups happening all over the place there are just so many interested parties.

The Ottoman Empire had a more infamous code of a new Sultan ordering the deaths of his brothers immediately upon his ascension to the throne so they couldn't be a threat to him. Few Sultan's would spare their brothers as they knew the price could be their own death by the very sibling they had spared. The Sultan's were also infamous in ordering the death's of their own son's if they seemed to be becoming too popular and gaining enough support to potentially oust them. Mary Queen of Scots famously had to be executed by Elizabeth I because she posed a threat to her with plots being hatched in her name even though Mary was imprisoned . If a figure is known to be alive at all and there is great reward to be had then there can still be forces who will rally to their cause. In this case with his nephews having so strong claim to the throne there would be even more people willing to risk the chance of placing one of his nephews on the throne for the reward and power they could receive for their loyalty if successful.

I’ve been doing a fair amount of research on the graffiti on the walls of the Tower. Most of it seems to be in the Beauchamp tower, the earliest being made by Robert Dudley, later Earl of Leicester, friend of Elizabeth I. I could not find anything earlier than that.

I do feel sympathy for the lack of medical knowledge of his conditions, and the lack of empathy that brought to him. @@nbenefiel You may be correct. There is no proof that he killed the princes. However, throughout history the struggle for power has lead to the execution of many rulers. Why did Bolingbroke kill Richard II, he had the throne already. Why did the French revolutionaries kill Louis, Marie Antoinette and the little Dauphin? Why was the entire Romanov family killed after the Russian Revolution? England's Charles I for that matter? There are too many instances to name them all. The fact is that these deposed monarchs and heirs presented a threat to the "new" reign or order. They needed to be eliminated. In the case of Richard III, although he had the throne already, the princes still represented a threat. Armies could be raised on their behalf as long as they were alive so yes, Richard had a motive to kill his nephews. Why the delay in the coronation? Why declaring them illegitimate? Why the insistence in separating the younger heir from his mother and family. There are many smoking guns pointed to Richard. Of course none of this can be proven thus far. However, homicide investigators would classify Richard as a person of interest.

I believe that they were killed by Buckingham on the orders of Margaret Beaufort, Richard did say that buckingham betrayed him in the worst possible manner and after his execution, Maggy B comes out and says that Buckingham died bcs he supported her son, which was total BS bcs he had a much better direct claim to the throne and he was quite rich, so why would he support a nobody from a bastardized line? Maggy B. could have convinced Buckingham to seize power and that they would support him, so in one swift swoop she eliminates the princes, buckingham and Richard´s credibility. If true, this would be a truly machiavelian move and I believe 100% they were capable of that and more

They said that during the reconstruction, that the staircase the princes were found under was from older than the 1400s and so that the skeletons found were before the 15th century or more. I wander what would had happened if the Woodvilles had carried out the late king’s wishes and waited until the boy came of age instead of looking like a power grab and trying to leave out Richard. Elizabeth and her brother had already gone for the treasury upon Edward’s death ordering a ship to carry the money, then Elizabeth took out more money upon Elizabeth’s brother’s arrest. Buckingham was married to a Woodville sister to make it more confusing. Lord Stanley’s heir was married to the sister of Elizabeth Woodville and his stepson was Henry Tudor and more confusions. Phillipa Langley, who found Richard the III’s grave, has a book coming out this month or the next on what they found concerning the Princes in the Tower It maybe wasn’t the fear of one so young ruling, but the elder Woodvilles ruling instead, in controlling the future boy king and ignoring the will of Edward the IV in rushing the coronation to next month instead of at least two years and attemptedly leaving the appointed protector out from the beginning and raiding the treasury before Richard met up with the prince’s party, having supposed to have met up with the prince. He had multiple nephews and was raising the orphaned children of his late brother George and named one of his nephews his heir upon the passing of the son Edward. His history in court is of compassion for the common people and was often called a merciful lord that in a way that was used to take advantage of him and jump him

The skeletons were found in 1674 buried 10 feet deep under a massive ancient stone stairway built in 1097 which was being removed. The Tower site has been inhabited since well before the Romans. Many skeletons have been found there. It is extremely unlikely that the skeletons n Westminster belonged to the princes. I like your post. You’ve done your homework.

I don't know if Richard has given out the order to kill them or not. We will probably never know for sure. But while Shakespeare's play "Richard lll" is undeniably a great play, it's also a great example of political propaganda. We have to remember that the first Tudor king Henry Vll, who also had an excellent motive for making the princes disappear - if they were still alive - was Elisabeth's grandfather! These turbulent times were still fresh in everybody's mind, and Elisabeth wanted a nice piece of Tudor propaganda 😉

@@sabineb.5616 Many, many years ago, when I was working on my MPhil theses and my doctoral dissertation, I spent most summers in London. I always considered my interest in RichardIII as a hobby. I spent most of my days at the Public Records Office and the British Museum reading room. When I was tired of translating my early Irish annals, I looked up stuff on Richard. I was taught that account rolls were very reliable sources of information. I saw the entries in Richard’s accounts of purchases for “the Lord Bastard” and “the son of EdwardIV”. This was not a new discovery, but I wanted to see them for myself. They certainly indicated that the boys were alive. There is also an entry in the account rolls of Margaret of Burgundy of money allocated for “ the raising of Yorkist heirs”. We know what happened to all but two of the Yorkist heirs. I think young Edward eventually died from the jaw abscess Dr Argentine was treating him for and that young Richard was executed by Perkin Warbeck.

The breakfast for the children was probably for Richard’s son, Edward of Middleham, and George’s son and daughter, Edward,of Warwick and his sister Margaret who later became Countess of Salisbury and was executed by HenryVIII at the age of 82.

Every time I watch one of your videos I get goosebumps. The history is amazing and the recreations are phenomenal. I always feel a connection with the person being recreated. I teared up a bit when I saw the boys. So sad and tragic. Always look forward to your videos.

Very nice representation and recreation of the faces! I am a Richardian, who believes that Richard lll was not like Shakespeare's famous villain: the real Richard did good and also a few bad things. He wasn't a psychopath who enjoyed to be a villain. But he was a man of his time, and he had indeed a good motive and also the opportunity to get rid of the princes. He might've convinced himself that it was a necessary evil because not everyone would accept the validity of his titulus regius, and the Woodvilles were a quarrelsome lot. Another bloody succession war would cost many more lives than just the lives of two kids. That sounds very callous, but it's probably true. It's also true that after Richard's death Henry Tudor had an even stronger motive to get rid of the kids than Richard, because - unlike Richard who had declared that his nephews were illegitimate and therefore not in line for the throne - Henry accepted them and their sister, whom he would marry later, as legitimate children of King Edward IV and Elisabeth Woodville. But if Richard's titulus regius was invalid, the older boy Edward was the undisputed crown prince, and if he was dead, his younger brother would be the next in line for the throne. There would've been no room for an outsider like Henry Tudor! But at the time when the boys had started to disappear, Henry didn't have the opportunity to harm the princes. However, it's very sad to contemplate this, but the kids might've never had a great chance to survive these turbulent times. If the princes would've still been alive and well in the Tower after Richard had been killed on the battlefield, Henry Tudor wouldn't just have had a much stronger motive but also the opportunity to get rid of the boys. It's very interesting btw that for some reason Henry never accused Richard of having been responsible for the murder of his nephews, although Henry was very eager to destroy Richard's reputation completely. It’s also interesting that Henry seemed to consider some claimants, who came forward many years later, to be dangerous, even if he didn't openly admit it. He genuinely didn't seem to know what had become of the princes! Could this be a hint that Henry Tudor had nothing to do with the disappearance of the princes? Who knows... I have never been aware of the discovery of Richard's note which said that children would be expected to arrive at a certain date. It's intriguing for sure - but it doesn't prove anything, and maybe Richard just wanted to get the boys killed outside of the Tower because that would facilitate the disposal of the bodies - but it's also possible that our assumption that these royal families were totally ruthless and wouldn't hesitate to destroy each other without second thoughts in order to gain or hang on to a position of power, isn't correct. Richard had been very close to his older brother, and his devotion seems to have been genuine. Isn't it possible that he knew that the boys could become a problem, and that it would be wise to get rid of them, but that Richard couldn't bring himself to go through with the plan of killing them. The last regent of the Tudor dynasty, Elisabeth l hesitated a long time before she finally ordered the execution of her imprisoned cousin Mary, Queen of Scotland. And Elisabeth felt very guilty for the rest of her life, although she never even knew Mary personally! Isn't it possible that Richard might've decided that there were other ways to deal with the problem than killing two innocent boys who were the children of his brother? Have the princes been quietly sent away in order to be raised anonymously somewhere abroad? Richard would've known full well that this could cause problems in the long run. But maybe, Richard believed that he just needed a few years of peace in order to stabilize his reign and win the full acceptance of his people. And if one of the boys should really decide to re-surface as an adult, the titulus regius would still be legit, and King Richard lll would've the right to crush him as a traitor. Richard wasn't known to be a coward, and he might have been willing to accept a certain amount of risk, if he didn't kill the boys. We simply don't know Richard well enough, and therefore we will probably never know for sure what really happened to the princes.

Whenever people argue that Richard III did not have the boys in the Tower killed, I ask a simple question: what would Richard have to gain from leaving them alive? Not only would England be divided between York and Lancaster, but it would then be split between those who believe Edward V was the rightful king, and those who believed that he was too young and thus Richard was more suitable

What would he have to gain by first declaring them illegitimate and then killing them? As protector, he could have had each one killed over the course of months and then he's king. So why bother declaring them bastards? Richard had a long history of using the law to get what he wanted, and he was doing that in this case. Keeping them alive lent legitimacy to the claim that he was always the rightful king. And if he HAD killed them, why not produce bodies? Richard probably knew that his brother had had Henry VI unalived and called in a broken heart via a smashed skull. No bodies wouldn't have done him any good. It doesn't make sense that he would kill them without proof.

"Why bother declaring them bastards" to make his overthrow of Edward V legitimate. There's no way the people wpuld have supported Richard overthrowing Edward V if Edward V was not declared illegitimate. I'm not claiming that Richard III was the devil like Shakespeare portrayed him to be. But there is no way he didn't order those boys' deaths

I doubt that KCIII can afford to do a DNA testing. As I recall, they had some trouble with one Royal's DNA test, because a later wife had a pregnancy with someone else. What if the skeletons were found to be royal, but not related to present monarchy. It would put the entire monarchy in jeopardy.

I don't believe Richard had them killed. HenryVII wanted to marry Elizabeth, to do so he would have to make Elizabeth legimate. If he did this while the princes are alive, Edward would have been the King as he would have been the next in line.

Sadly back then it was kill or be killed. I think Richard originally planned to be Protector but found Edward V too strongly bound to his Woodville relatives to work with him. An abyss then stretched ahead of him…he had a wife and son to protect, and in his book the Woodvilles had killed his brother George. If only the Woodville had been willing to share power with Richard the whole tragedy would have been averted. Also Edward IV should have let Richard raise his heir so they had a working relationship rather than leave the boy with the Woodville faction.

The declaration of Edward IV’s sons illegitimacy was made first by the Privy Council after Stillington presented his evidence of the plight troth and was confirmed by Parliament. Richard had nothing to do with it.

I would rather believe that the princes were spared and Richard III had them sent away and made sure they were well cared for throughout their lives. There have been a couple of speculative theories in regards to what happened to Edward V. One of them was in regard to a young 15 year boy named John Evens who shows up out of nowhere in a village called Coldridge and lived in a manor with a man named Thomas Grey who was the half brother King Edward IV. People speculated that it was indeed Edward V. He died in 1511 at the age of 41. Great Video as always.
