in Germany, we have two types of chinnamon: cassia and Ceylon cinnamon. We always habe purple oats, cause I use Aroniaberries. They have the highest amount of anthocyiane. Greetings from Germany.

Lol, we use cassia as a possum deterrent here in Australia. You sent me looking up aronia berries. They are only just being introduced in Australia and are not widely available. They are from the rose family and, better known as choke berries, they hail from North America and are naturalised in Europe these days. Will have to hunt them down! 😊

Ladies this is amazing, I literally have almost the same recipe that I eat everyday for breakfast. Everyday after I drink a glass of lemon water. This is my recipe~ oats, cooked with water, frozen blueberries and frozen cherries= purple oats, added a small banana cut up, chia seeds/flax, cinnamon, ground ginger, with a few sprinkles of walnuts! Sometimes just a dash of maple syrup if I'm feeling a little more sweet. But that's it, my everyday go to purple oats! Funny how minds can think alike.😊 Enjoy

I’ve been making whole grain oats (groats) for almost a decade. To me the flavor and texture exceeds all other types. Plus, they’re less processed- you can take a grain and put it in soil and it will sprout. Try them with your favorite fixings - you won’t be disappointed.

I use Ceylon cinnamon which is a much more cinnamon-y taste, but at the same time milder.

I have never had savory oats, so I had to try Ann’s recipe. I fix sweet oats with bananas all the time. I had to steady my self to try something totally different and I am so glad I did. This will be my go to quick meal for evenings when I am too tired to cook. Great idea! Thank you ladies.

I'm a weirdo and dislike sweets breakfast, so my oats are almost always savory and sometimes purple too! I cook up a big batch of oat groats porridge in the Instant pot using veggie broth and add lentils, grated red cabbage and beets, onions, grated carrot, cauli-rice, spinach, whatever, and sprinkle on nutritional yeast when it's done. Sounds strange but I love it!

In Australia, and I think in most places, we call royal cinnamon "Dutch cinnamon". Historically a lot of common spices were taken to northern Europe by the Dutch who occupied Indonesia as a colonial power. This is the first time I've heard of royal cinnamon. But, I put cinnamon and fresh ground nutmeg in my oats every day. NB: Cherries are good for peeps with arthritis

Thank you Tosca for your hint about Cherries. I suffer from severe arthritis so will definitely try this. I love using Cinnamon in my vegan cooking to add flavour. By the way, I'm also from Australia - Melbourne actually. Stay safe.

What timing!! I just recently came over to the steel cut oats side. I was on vacation last week, and thought I had more rolled oats in stock then I actually had. I ran out of rolled oats before I ran out of vacation. Fortunately I had some steel cut oats in stock, though I had only tried cooking them once or twice before with less than ideal results. I discovered the overnight method, and have been eating them ever since. I brought steel cut oats and water to a boil, cover and removed from heat, and left them overnight. The next morning I had slightly soupy oats with a little tooth left to them, just the way I like them. This week returning to work I discovered if I start a batch of oats as soon as I get home from work, they're ready to portion up just before I go to bed. This video has given me some ideas on some variations to try. There was a time when I would have never believed running out of oats would be cause for concern.

Yet another great video! Well done & Thanks. I get the colour differently. I cook oat, barley, rye groats/berries with some forbidden (black) rice in the instant pot for 24 minutes and the grainy porridge come out with a purple colour. Even if the groats/berries are soft this is still a very chewy porridge which makes it all the more interesting to eat. Adding berries is also a great add-in. Enjoy.

Thank you for sharing this recipe. I have been making oats (large flake organic) in a Pyrex bowl in a steamer basket. I have been enjoying blueberries and raspberries and either chopped dates or date paste for sweetness. I will give goji berries or goji berry powder a try. I sometimes eat oats for dinner as well. I will be trying steel cut oats next using the same steamer process. I hope everyone enjoys their oats no matter how you prepare them. ❤️🇨🇦💚💪🌱

PS.... in answer to your question...i always throw riced cauliflower in with my oats while they cook, & sometimes grated zucchini too... cos you cant taste them amongst all the berries! I like to see the pretty green flecks of zucc skin in my porridge, but if my veges are working undercover (for fussy childrens breakfasts) i'll peel the zucc first before grating. Then when u ladle out purple porridge all full of fruit.....both the cauli & zucchini are undetectable!

I can remember back in yhe 1970s, when the United States switched over from Ceylon cinnamon to Cassia because of cost (like everything else.) I don't know if it is correct and true, but i have read that Ceylon cinnamon is good for your kidneys and liver, whereas too much of Cassia cinnamon is not. Cassia has 63 times the amount of coumarin (a blood thinner) than Ceylon.

i prefer veggies and curry spices in my savory oatmeal instead of the sweet, though my husband will probably like it. i think i have most of the ingredients, i've got currents and dates too so i'll experiment with what he likes best. cassia, the the stuff that they sell as cinnamon in stores has a compound (coumarin) that is detrimental to a person like me who has liver problems so i avoid the stuff.
