"An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times. I think that is true of painters, sculptors, poets, musicians. As far as I’m concerned, it’s their choice, but I choose to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself. That, to me, is my duty. And at this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when everyday is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved. Young people, black and white, know this. That’s why they’re so involved in politics. We will shape and mold this country or it will not be molded and shaped at all anymore. So I don’t think you have a choice. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times? That to me is the definition of an artist." ~ Nina Simone

Black trans women experience discrimination and violence just like cis women, but their mistreatment is usually ignored by the black community. A lot of “woke” black spaces either ignore trans people entirely or are outright transphobic. I appreciate seeing someone like Janelle acknowledge ALL women. Started the video again immediately after it ended and watched it all the way through again, mesmerised and in tears. So powerful and so tragic.

made the mistake of listening/watching this on the way to a work event and now I'm tearing up on the train. this thing needs to be at a million views. on a lighter note, I love that some of my favorite people are featured on this track: Janelle, CxH, Beyonce, Dr. Crenshaw, Alicia Garza....this is pretty dope

I got goose bumps & almost cried it's a lot to take in & if you broaden this & look at how Haitians are being dealt with overall America just doesn't respect Black people
