This joint came out in 1989 from her rhythm nation album. I agree with you as well...I love 80s music and how they mixed the vocals on tracks. That echo reverb affect makes the songs sound so much fuller and complete.

What up Jack. Actually this is a 90's track from her Rhythm Nation album. Your analysis once again is on point. If I may, dice into some of Janet's more R&B flavored tracks like I Get Lonely and I Want You. Great work. I really admire your input. :)

It's more of an 80's track. I realize the single was released in early 1990, but it definitely is more of an 80's sound. Compare it to the sound on the Janet album now that is true 90's. And then velvet rope album.

Love your reactions! This song is from the 1989 Rhythm Nation album and it was released as a single in 1990. The theme was more so, think Mardi Gras which is why stylistically it looks 'all over the place' - if you notice the soldiers are in the background as well. Basically, it's Mardi Gras going on in a Spanish area during a time of war and conflict - but the party goes on despite that which is why you see Janet and the rest of the Mardi Gras folks unphased by the soldiers. This is also the 3rd single right after Rhythm Nation - so looking at the story and picture she painted in Rhythm Nation - this video carry's that social issue theme forward. That's one of the things I love about Janet (which is why I love that you have the lyrics up when you watch these videos) Janet is very deceiving when she wants to be lyrically - on the surface, a song can lyrically/sonically sound light-hearted and carefree - but there is a deeper underlying message - that's part of what made this album such a success. and it was a Spanish set at Universal Studios lot in Hollywood - many are, it's why her videos have such a 'theatrical feel' to them because they were shot on movie studios - (in fact, little tidbit) if you ever get out to L.A and you go to Universal Studios (Studio Tour) where they take you on the backlot of the studio - this set is still up and it's a highlighted part of the studio tour {kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpO7fYd_mZ6DbM0}. Actually, the studio tour goes through a few of Janet's old music video sets and sound stages - everything from Alright (set), Doesn't Really Matter & Scream (soundstages). I love this song. It's one of Janet's many #1's The video was 1990, I was just starting to be introduced to Janet through this album (Rhythm Nation) - by the time she got to this single - which was the 3rd single - I was a die-hard fan and never stopped since. This entire album was a commercial and (post-release) critical success. She still holds the record for Rhythm Nation 1814 producing a record-setting seven top-five hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 - 4 #1's (Escapade, Black Cat, Love Will Never Do Without You & Miss You Much), Rhythm Nation (song) & Come Back to Me peaked at #2. All the videos for this era you should do! They are all fantastic for all very different reasons along with the songs. So I recommend any of the songs above you haven't seen {so minus Rhythm Natio}.

@@JackReacts904 You're very welcome. Yeah, sometimes it helps to watch Janet's videos in order, because her and Micheal, treated (and called) their albums "era's". Janet had VERY different themes per album. You already did a reaction to the video "If" in the Japanese futuristic club. That song/video is on the next album after this album titled 'janet' where she was no longer a young 22-year-old discovering her voice in the world; now she's a 26/27 young woman embracing her sexual side and dealing more so with issues of love - after that "Velvet Rope" she's a 30-year-old dealing with issues of depression and sexual orientation and accepting responsibility for your life, ect... Janet is a great artists career to explore because she's made all of her albums autobiographical. They're all about what's going on (and went on since the last album) in her life - so it's literally listening to a teenager mature into an independent adult and all the struggles of growing up in the middle and because doing music was always 'optional' to her - she wasn't at the beck and call of a record label and what they wanted - she got to do whatever she wanted and that freedom is something other artists didn't have. This is why, even though Janet doesn't have the octaves of Mariah or the power of Whitney - what she has is the ability to make great/catchy songs and make them RELATABLE mixed with an explosive and outstanding stage presence (which Whitney and Mariah doesn't have). Love watching you discover her more - you pay attention to lyrics and the meaning behind them, you don't just listen to music for a beat or rhythm and Janet is a BRILLIANT artist for you to explore.

For info, this song was the third single of the album after ''Mis You Much'' and the title track. This song was released in january 1990 and peaked in n.1 in US charts. This song turned more in a dance-pop song, unlike others songs of the album like ''Alright'', ''Miss You Much'', ''Love Will Never Do (Without You)'' and ''Lonely'' to theses songs was more RnB. Aside ''Escapade'' turned in a dance-pop song, ''Black Cat'' was a hard rock song.

This track was part of Rhythm Nation. The first two tracks released on the album were Miss You Much then Rhythm Nation. At the release of the album, we were given the chance to view the full Rhythm Nation movie so search that out to get a full feel of the Rhythm Nation concept. Although she wanted to focus on the social message of the album. She also wanted to have some fun tracks on the album too, so then we get Escapade and Alright to balance out the theme. RN was released 1990. Seriously, checkout the full RN movie to see how the entire project connects since it appears that you're on your way to becoming part of Janet's Nation.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were master producers they have the most number one singles in music history (as far as production goes) and a lot of that success has to be do to Janet. They produced some classic 80's records "Tender Love," "Saturday Love," "if it isnt love (New Edition which is one of my favorite new jack swing songs), as well as some great songs from the 90's and 2000's like Boyz Men "Four seasons" "Bended Knee" and they did Ushers best tracks on Confessions (which is his best album in my opinion) as well as "U remind me." They are legendary producers who are from Mineapolis and were former bandmates of Prince and use to have a band called "The Time" "Flytetime" if you react to the music video "Control its basically Janet featuring The Time because all members of the band are in it. They have a distinctive sound and it is very similar to Prince that is why Joe Jackson didnt really want his daughter sounded like Prince due to Prince being a rival of MJ. Janets music is very innovative and influential. "Escapade" gives a shoutout to Minneapolis you hear Janet give the city a shoutout. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Janet are music best collobarators Janets best works comes from albums they touch.

The video is like a old school Mardi Gras theme that's how she does it in her concerts

the dark skinned guy in the video with the thing swinging in front of him has been her dancer since Control - he was in What Have you done for me lately video but he's now transgender; she says "Minneapolis" because thats where she went to record Control and Rhythm Nation with Prince;s proteges I guess you could say - Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis

Checkout the same track, remixed by Shep Pettibone. Shep Pettibone was a wicked remix producer for significant 80s music.

Back in the 80's music videos were big on choreography and visuals. This one was not from a movie. It had a Carnival/Caribbean theme and flavor. Mardi Gras in New Orleans has a strong Caribbean influence. Carnival originated from Italy but in the Caribbean took on a strong African influence.

Latest 1989 from the album rhythm nation 1814 and the song was released in early 1990 as the third single I think but they got more hits from that album like I miss you much rhythm nation, Alright, black cat, come back to me (which was sampled later by plies & ne-yo call bust it baby), love will never do without you and a non u.s single state of the world which was later named for her 2017 tour after she gave birth to her first child a son on January 3 2017

You should do “miss you much” I’d think you’d luv that one by her, the one with the chair routine at the end though. All of Janet’s videos from that era were always largely produced by the record labels as she was a big pop star during that period and records labels wanted a return on their investment and they certainly got it with Janet
