Janet was recently denied a car hire during a holiday to Ireland after being told she would need a doctor’s note and proof from her insurers that she was ‘fit to drive’, despite having a clean licence! This experience has Janet all revved up - and not for nothing as recent studies show 77% of us think it should be mandatory for drivers over 70 to retake their test - but do the rest of our panel agree? Prepare for a petrol-fuelled rant!

Sadly I’ve seen several older people who are finding it hard to walk yet are supposedly able to drive. I am 70 my son is a driving instructor and won’t hesitate to remove my car when the time comes.

Sadly there are many older people who still think they are OK to drive when they really are not. At 60 I have asked my children/ Grandchildren to tell me iwhen they think I'm getting past it! I don't want to be responsible for injuring or killing someone

My husband and I both in our late 70s live and drive in Chicago, rent cars in Spain for winter , but in our native Ireland, that we love , we have not been able to rent for the last few years. We’re told at the car rental , we would need letters from our doctor and insurance company, and that still would not guarantee we could get a car . Age discrimination .

I do think they should take a test after a certain age to see if they are still suitable to drive. I get that some people are still really fit and mobile for their age but most hav reduced mobility and reduced reactions etc, let's face it, u need Ur wits about u behind the wheel, which can be dangerous to other rd users and pedestrians if u are struggling with any of the above. I also understand that old age comes to us all eventually but I'm all for safety 1st. It's not ageist, it's being sensible

Thank you! I fully agree. I said to my partner a decade ago that maybe everyone who drives should have to do refreshers every 15-20 years of driving. From when you pass. Because all drivers pick up bad habits throughout the years. Forgetting to Indicate is 1 of them.

Janet is the best. I never would never have guessed her age. She makes excellent points here. It's pretty strict here in Australia with driving over a certain age, and also with certain medical condition's such as diabetes.

I’m 77 had a couple of episodes in my car when I was a bit confused when reversing didn’t do any damage to our car or anything else so gave up driving my husband also didn’t feel confident driving so we gave our car up I do think your reactions do slow down as you age and it’s not the driving it’s your ability to stop fast in the moment in an emergency stop unfortunately you won’t find out till your in the situation when it could be to late we live in retirement apartments and some of the residents should definitely I’m afraid should not be driving

Everyone has to reapply for their driving licence every 3 years when they reach 70. I was shocked to discover that it is a box ticking exercise and I self declared that I am ok to drive. I am now 73 and have to apply again. I took 2 assessments with a driving instructor, who said I am perfectly capable. This was my decision, I wanted to be sure I was still safe. I think everyone should be reassessed at 70.

That's being ageist... And it's done for money revenue, nothing more. But then again you can afford to have someone drive you if needed. It's other people who are not well off that are effected. But this should not happen to anyone. The company should be named and shamed.

Its not ageist. There is clearly cognitive and physical decine as we get older. And it's different for different people. Ageist would be banning drivers of a certain age. A yearly test for over seventies is perfectly acceptable.

This is so true, it is totally ageist. it is the young people who have the higher crash stats - not the older people. And lets all remember we'll be that age soon and will want to still be able to drive.

Age shouldnt even come into it, the highway code changes every now and then so all drivers should have a regular re-test. I doubt any driver reads the updated highway codes after theyve past their driving test.

Is it ageist to be concerned about elderly driver's ? Some will be OK, some won't. Surely it's just common sense, as we get older, we do start to have issues 🤷🏻‍♀️. Too many things that are just pure "Common sense", are being labelled ageist and other such things. Janet maybe pretty sharp, but that's not the case with every oap

Try banning me from driving. Age discrimination is rife, younger, newby drivers can drive appallingly, they have no road experience to fall back on. We, the older people, have masses of experience because we have grown up with increasing cars and ludicrous motorways. We know how to handle the situation 🇬🇧🇬🇧

sorry but old people's reaction time continue to diminish especially after 70 along with other medical issues that could make driving HARDER then years prior. I don't think they should be banned but at least have to re-take a test at certain age groups to ensure they are still ok to keep driving.
