I have been struggling trying to gather with the straight stitch method for a couple of hours now. Trying to adjust the settings to make it work and it just wouldn't with my fabric. The floss method took me maybe 10 minutes. Absolute life saver! Thank you!

Making a double ruffle pillowcase, and happily sew 2 rows of basting stitches over the 4 layers of fabric for the gathers and to my horror, I couldn't pull the stitches. So glad to find your video and the dental floss method. Was so lost and thought I had to buy one of those ruffle presser foot to do the job. Thank you ♥

Thanks this is awesome! It seems really apparent to me that you have a lot of serious sewing experience and you actually know how the threads work mechanically. Or at least you're good at explaining it.

Hi Jan, once the gathered piece is attached to the other fabric, how would you finish that inside seam with gathered fabric?
@JanHowell Жыл бұрын
You can use a serger or zigzag stitch.
@mochigirl4447 ай бұрын

Hi, thank you for the helpful video! I have a question- I tried the first method to gather fabric that was already hemmed at the top (I wanted a ruffle hem to peek out exposed at the top of the ruffle) but when I pulled the bottom thread, it only ruffled the part an inch or two from the end; I couldn’t pull it to ruffle the middle of my piece. Do you know why this might be? Whether the hem caused the issue or if maybe it was just too long (it was 92 inches long)?
@JanHowell7 ай бұрын
If the sewn thread has been pulled the opposite directions, it will lock up the thread. Did you sew more than one row? For something long long, I always sew at least two sometimes three rows, because often time one of the threads break.

Can you also show how to attach the gather to waistband with the floss method, please?

I will try the floss method very soon. I’m so sick of my gathering threads breaking with 40 or 50 weight thread.

Do you have to change the serger needles depending on the fabric? I have a White Superlock 534 and have a hard time finding videos on how to use it.
@JanHowell Жыл бұрын
Yes, you'll want to change needle types especially if sewing on knit fabric. Here's a tutorial you may find helpful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZjTqHSagNN_otU

How would you attach the raffle when it’s made with floss?
@JanHowell3 ай бұрын
You pull the floss out after gathering and stitching
@TeresaV2 жыл бұрын
I got a little confused at the end. Did you sew over that first basting stitch? Did you remove both basting stitches?
@JanHowell2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you sew over both basting stitches, depending on your seam allowance. If it show on the front side, you can remove the basting stitches.
@angl1cake6 ай бұрын
how do you keep the floss in place?
@JanHowell6 ай бұрын
You tie a knot with the sewing machine thread. Watch here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zl6Tq4F9n6edr7ssi=ddTIEjfK2t3QxPeS&t=452

Floss is genius, but whenever I finally have to attach the piece, like you do at 09:32, my presser foot keeps straightening out the bit of fabric underneath itself so I end up with poorly or not rouched at all piece! It's like this job requires a walking foot, but you did it so I can't tell what's the difference
@JanHowell Жыл бұрын
It sounds like you may not be holding the gathered layer on top in place while you are sewing over it. If you don't it will flatten out.
@MysteStorm2 жыл бұрын
I saw one tip, where they put a pin into the foot ... but, when I did the exact same ... it did not work, why?
@JanHowell2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rowena, I've never seen that tip. Sorry.

your width is showing 4.50. Did you change it to zero? Many may not be using a digital sewing so is it the same?

I have a surger, but not to familiar with it. I want to learn how to adjust the stitch width and length. I learn better by watching videos....lol
@JanHowell2 жыл бұрын
The trick is just to practice. Each machine will be a little different. Do you have a manual? What kind of serger do you have? The length adjustment is usually on the side and the width on the inside somewhere.
@portialanden63532 жыл бұрын
@@JanHowell yes, I have the owner manual that came with the machine, but I find I learn better by watching videos. I have the bother 1034DX. I feel that if I start messing around with the machine, I might mess something up or break something. I feel it's very intimidating if that makes sense. I see on Utube the brother 1034D seems like it's more popular. Thanks for responding to me! I appreciate it!
@mudeprecious9580 Жыл бұрын
I only saw you dragging/pulling the material with your hands. You did not gather it with the machine. I didn't learn something new in this video.

You're looking for a gathering foot. They're about 50 dollars at Joann but I think you may want to do the free method. Pays not to be rude 🥰
@mudeprecious9580 Жыл бұрын
@@dreamofmaizie I am only saying the obvious. If that is what you call rude, stay with your opinion.
@dreamofmaizie Жыл бұрын
@mudeprecious9580 Well, this is what most people would consider gathering with a sewing machine. You are not stating the obvious. Doing it with your hands would be manually creating a running stitch across the whole fabric. This ends here. I will not respond to you again. Believe what you want, but I will not start a fight in this lovely, Helpful lady's comment section.

@@mudeprecious9580Seemed rude to me as well, so perhaps you are learning something new from watching this video after all.
