I have a huge blanket where i used my serger to 'flatlock' the squares and, yes, i backed it with a flannel sheet and tied it (no batting). I cut the remaining denim into circles and used them to make a 'mock cathedral window' with coloured quilt cotton centres.

The only downside is that denim is heavy. I make lots of denim blankets for an organization that sends them to our troops overseas.

Great style and congratulations on inspiring AND teaching so well! Very well organized, efficient and productive. I'm impressed! Got it - the machine is a PFAFF Performance Icon . Serious adult entertainment but really, no different than having a Steinway B (800+ lbs.) in your home.

This video is so what I needed for quilt construction. Now that grandma is gone, I will be quilting on my own. I used to cut her pieces and thread her needles, with her taking over the construction tasks. I missed out on that so I will learn how to quilt in her honor.

So great that fabric gets recycled!! I love denim quilts. About nesting the seams. It is even easier if you flip the top one up and he bottom one down, You don't need to worry about the bottom one turning and the seams nest even closer together. just something I noticed. 😀

Another great project and video! So fun! Noticed a Jan Tip that I have not heard you mention with a piece of a yoga mat under your machine. I have old yoga mats for sanding wood with my carpentry projects. Can not believe I had not thought to put a piece of mat under my sewing machines, especially the serger as it wants to fly around. Thanks Jan!

I like your process. I'm looking forward to part 2 and 3. I recently made a denim quilt out of old jeans and old flannel shirts for the back. Rag quilt style. It's shabby and scrappy and deliciously heavy and warm! No batting needed. It's almost yard sale season so I can get more cheap jeans and try your pattern!

Love this quilt! I love tied quilts since that's how my Grandma's quilts were all quilted. For beginners, offsetting the rows would make sewing the rows together easier, especially for beginning quilters.

You're great at explaining things. I'm a sewer but all I do are easy things and I feel stuck. I want to be able to sew bias on a curved edge, make clothes and harder techniques. My son slept at his friends house and said they had a jean blanket and the weight of it was magical. I may try this! Thanks

Hi Destiny. I made a smallish denim quilt years ago backed by a flannel sheet. The weight is great for snuggling under on the couch in front of the tv, but a very large one would be very very difficult to launder imo. Try making a smaller sized denim quilt to start with, would be my advice. Happy sewing!

Great videos! I have always wanted to make a denim quilt. I made a quilt from 12 x 12 squares by sewing machine when i was about 18 years old…which i still have but the stuffing is all bunched up from washing & I didn’t know to tie the squares at the time-just made it from an article in the”chatelaine” magazine! I’m going to be 65 this year & have been getting back to crafting/sewing the past few years. Your video inspired me to cut the denim squares from the jeans i had been deconstructing the past few months. Today I laid them all out on my living room floor & watched your video again for the next steps! I love the orange plaid flannel you chose for the backing. You mention using sheet sets; would you be willing to share the source? Thanks for all your inspiration! 🧡🩵

I've just about completed my quilt top for my very first ever quilt it's a denim square top just like the one in the video except my seams aren't exactly lined up at all. I've decided to leave it the way it is and just learn from my cutting errors and not repeat them my next quilt.. but my question is will there be any major issues or anything else that could go wrong after I sandwich and hand tie ? Other than the fact that the lines aren't up?
@JanHowell
@JanHowell 2 ай бұрын
The only concern would be the finished size. I'd just make sure it is squared up. I am impressed with your first quilt. I think it will be cute with things not quite lined up. Let me know if you have any further questions. fibersandtwigs@gmail.com

Thanks for the video series. I'm going to attempt to make my own denim quilt. Would you happen to know how many squares I would need for a king size bed?
@JanHowell
@JanHowell Жыл бұрын
I don't, but it would't be hard to figure out. Get the measurements for the blanket finished size, figure out how big you want your squares and multiply. You'll have to account for the seam allowance as well.

Have you looked into the cricut or silhouette cutting machines available out there for cutting quilting materials? I haven't tried my cricut maker 3 for this yet but I've seen a lot on youtube where it's super timesaving and it can cut precisely. And my machine can cut multiple types of things. Not just fabrics.

So many jeans these days have some stretch to them, are they usable?
@JanHowell

Yes. Just make sure when you are sewing the blocks together that you don't stretch the fabric. I use them all the time.

How do I avoid stretch in the top layer when I sew two strips together? My seams aren’t lining up because of it.
@JanHowell
@JanHowell 5 ай бұрын
Sew half way and then hold top and bottom fabric ends together as you sew. It will either pull the top or bottom fabric a bit to”ease” in the fabric. Try that.

Do you use jeans that have stretch to them? If so, do you stabilize them first?
@JanHowell

Yes, you can use jeans that have stretch to them. I don't stabilize them. Just make sure when you are sewing them to a non-stretch block that you don't stretch it. I have no problems with them when it's all put together.
