I was a teenage boy when her song at 17 came out, and I could not believe that every song on that album was beyond great. her song writing is far above bob Dylan. and all my guy friends were listening to led zeplin, black sabath, and so on. and they would laugh at me ffor listening to her music. but the song that she wrote were not from this world.

I totally agree with you 100%! I too was made fun of for listening to Janis. I still love her to this day. I think you and I would get along all these years later. Write me at writingreader@gmail.com Thanks! Dave

Plus...y'know Janis can SING. Not so much Dylan, but that's just my tiny opinion. As songwriters both are phenomenal, but just...he cannot sing. SMH

All her songs are hauntingly beautiful and yet heart-wrenching. I love the double-entendre of “morning” and “mourning.” “It’s a long, long time ‘til mourning lays wasted on the dawn.” Wow!

I don't want to ride the milk train any more I'll go to bed at nine, and waken with the dawn And lunch at half past noon Dinner prompt at five The comfort of a few old friends long past their prime Pass the tea & sympathy For the good old days long gone Let's drink a toast to those who most Believe in what they've won It's a long long time 'til morning Plays wasted on the dawn I'll not write another line, For my true love is gone And when the guests have done I'll tidy up the room I'll turn the covers down And gazing at the moon Will pray to go quite mad And live in long ago When you and I were one, so very long ago Pass the tea & sympathy For the good old days long gone Let's drink a toast to those who most Believe in what they've won It's a long long time 'til morning Plays wasted on the dawn I'll not write another line, For my true love is gone And when I have no dreams To give you any more, I'll light a blazing fire And wait within the door, And throw my life away "I wonder why?" they all will say And now I lay me down to sleep, Forever and a day Pass the tea & sympathy For the good old days are dead Let's drink a toast to those who best Survived the life they've led It's a long long time 'til morning, So build your fires high Now I lay me down to sleep, Forever by your side

I'm Russian and never knew anything about this song/singer. But I'm in tears now! The storytelling is just so strong. The picture of the old woman sitting without a purpose or love in her life... man... I cry. I even went and found what those 'milk trains' were in 30-60s' England. I cried of the nostalgia about the thing I've never seen.

I wouldn't say this is the saddest, for me 'In the winter' wins that accolade, closely followed by 'Jesse' and 'At Seventeen' - although I am sure you have found that out for yourself by now.

30 years easily since listening to Between the Lines - my god, remembered every word and every emotion from all those years ago. So beautiful and real both in the syrup of the memories but the beauty of the time she takes me back to. She really was the voice that told me, in all that teenage angst, that I was not alone. I am admonishing myself now for letting it go.
