Janis had one of the most unique & powerful voices with a lot of grit. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs in her short life such as "Me & Bobby McGee", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.

What can I even say? It's Janis. She was before my time but she carried over to my music, she was among those that didn't open the door for rocks best they kicked it down and owned it. One of the most powerful voices ever, unfortunately another member of the horrible 27 club along with other legends like, Amy, Cobain, the lizard king, Hendrix and sadly many others. She was a rare talent, her music is legendary. Thank you so much for appreciating her and the video and thoughtful commentary

I'm so glad you went from PTX Pentatonix performance to this. Janis Joplin had such a strong, gritty voice. PTX couldn't really touch this when they were younger, but I'd love to hear them try it today.

Summertime 1969 is really, really good. The band is not so great but Janis is incredible.

@555_Vibes Slightly before my (cognizant) time, but Janis has always been my soulmate! Thank you for your amazing reaction to this pioneer of soul rock and major feminist voice of the 60s. Amazing....Profound...Moving and mostly thought-provoking! Great loss at a young age 😞

Because she died so young, every scrap of what little footage existed has been put out there, including performances where her voice is strained (including here), she is strung out, or the audio and/or video quality is really lacking. This does show her energy on stage during tours. Look for her televised live performances such as on the Cavett, Sullivan, and Tom Jones shows where her voice is always rested and the audio very good.

In Don McLean's song American Pie he spoke about the lady who sang the blues, he was talking about Janice.

You should look for her performance on the original Dick Cavett talk show. I think he had her on twice. She also had a hit song after she died which was she sang the Kris Kistoferson song “Me and Bobby McGee”. Janis and Kris were lovers for a while but had broken up by the time she died. He didn’t know she had recorded the song till later.

Janis was a fantastic performer. She had a pretty solid following but sadly, like so many true artists, she didnt blow up until after her death. I loved her. Also, this was an early example of Pentatonix's genius. They knew they couldnt replicate Janis's style so they brilliantly arranged the song in that reggae style which was also great.
