Check out this footage of Janis Joplin performing "Tell Mama" live during the Festival Express tour in 1970. You can find this performance and many others on Shout! Factory's release of Festival Express. Buy the film here: www.shoutfactory.com/product/...
In the summer of 1970, some of the eras biggest rock stars all took to the rails for Festival Express, a multi-artist, multi-day, multi-city concert tour that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lives, slept, rehearsed and let loose aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Winnipeg, to Calgary, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience was filmed both off-stage and on, but the extensive footage and sound tapes of the events remained locked away for decades, only recently having been rediscovered and restored. The film Festival Express is a momentous achievement in rock film archaeology which combines the long-lost material with contemporary interviews that add important context to the event nearly 35 years after originally being filmed.

You see a TON of young singers on tv these days that all can sing great, but they all sound the same. First, you have to have your heart broken to sing the blues and sing from your SOUL to connect with the audience! That's the trouble with these people on shows like "America got Talent"etc..They all sound the same....they lack the experience that only a few broken hearts under a belt can give! You have to give into the pain ..the sorrow...the ecstacy.....the moment....and recreate it on stage. That's when you break away from the pack and you TRULY become something SPECIAL and UNIQUE..like Janis Joplin was!

Anytime Janis isn't singing is a wasted bar of music.

Janis is the real deal. She was honest, she didn't hide who she was and she paid the price with so much pain. I was from TX also, I have been bullied my entire life. No fucking prom either. Lots of freaking heartache and I have always been left alone.

She really could sing from her heart as someone else said here. And she needed no or even cared about make-up, NO ONE will ever come close to her.

Wow, this brings back memories. I was 17, living in Calgary and was at The Festival Express. The funny part is I do not remember one single band except for Janis. She was on last and this video is exactly what I saw. It was dark out, her feathered boa was fluttering in the summer breeze. She was drinking out of a bottle of booze and she really was spectacular.

This was from the Calgary concert on the Festival Express Tour. It was July 4, 1970 so all of the Americans in the crowd and on the stage were into celebrating. Was an awesome warm night and the crowd was definitely into this show. I saw this concert. Will always remember how wonderful it was .. Janis died exactly 3 months later ...RIP .. Janis - October 4, 1970.
