Check out this footage of The Band performing "The Weight" live during the Festival Express tour in 1970. You can find this performance and many others on Shout! Factory's release of Festival Express. Buy the film here: www.shoutfactory.com/product/...
In the summer of 1970, some of the eras biggest rock stars all took to the rails for Festival Express, a multi-artist, multi-day, multi-city concert tour that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lives, slept, rehearsed and let loose aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Winnipeg, to Calgary, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience was filmed both off-stage and on, but the extensive footage and sound tapes of the events remained locked away for decades, only recently having been rediscovered and restored. The film Festival Express is a momentous achievement in rock film archaeology which combines the long-lost material with contemporary interviews that add important context to the event nearly 35 years after originally being filmed.

Robbie wasn’t a great singer, but yes, he sung lead on “To Kingdom Come” on Music From Big Pink & it was a pretty cool vocal. Obviously he wasn’t a prominent voice in the Band but contributed basic back-ups ... always amuses me when people suggest his mic was “muted”(?) or switched off - as if they would really know - he certainly did not lack credibility, & there really was no reason whatsoever for him to do something so inauthentic. So, unless you were there...

I wish I could watch all the band performances rather than the one song. I also wish they could have done much better mixing and shooting. This film is much worse than the Last Waltz in terms of sound and vision.
@DaveAnchovies
@DaveAnchovies 3 жыл бұрын
totally disagree. live shows are supposed to be raw and that moments vision. people are so used to being fed a studio manicured phony live album, they cant accept the real live experience relived. the true live album is one that shouldnt be tinkered with, mixed down and sanitized. i thought this was fantastic...but you really only get that pure live show on a bootleg. whats your beef with the sound?

Disagree. Purchase and watch Festival Express. Raw and natural. All the musicians on the train through Canada, a once in a life time show.

I was never blown away or even taken with the Last Waltz...it was Festival Express that woke me up to the Band, Grateful Dead and some lesser known acts...I guess we have our own opinions on that, just stating the personal effect it had on myself, especially the Band footage and the entire focus of each film. Last Waltz more of an overblown. Festival Express more of a open party of acts ranging from the bigger to more obscure acts, hanging out together getting loaded and playing music together.
