I can tell a good teacher by my consistently good results. I was concerned that this landscape was beyond my abilities, but Master Jansen proved me wrong! Listen, follow his advice and techniques, and watch your works come to life! “It’s only a board and some paint” I’m beginning to trust the process and loosen my brush. Love the results.

I began watching you last year, I guess. I watched this one and at the time nothing was open where I could get paint and other supplies--unless you count WAlmart, which was out of nearly every dang thing (yes, I was THAT desperate). I'm working my way through these again. I'm also doing my own series on our park here, in northern Ill. where we are park managers, it is a re-planted prairie and it also has a water lily pond which I've got to paint. So glad to have found you, David a year or so ago. I'll be going/have been going through your landscapes and will be painting a number of them!

my mum passed away in March this year and I have inherited her acrylic paints and brushes etcetera so I decided to give it ago. As someone who normally just draws and sketches and occasionally watercolours I found the acrylic paints very difficult to use, so I was searching youtube for help, your channel I now watch consistently and its helping me a lot. The things I have learned recently are not to fiddle with detail like I normally do, and paint MUCH bigger than i normally do, so Ive decided to day its go big or go home. Thankyou for your inspiration
@JansenArtEducation4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynn, Acrylics are difficult to use if you try to use them like oils. Most people complain about the drying time because they are trying to use them like oils. I don't, I have developed both oil and acrylic paint lines. They are different. Use different techniques. When I was an oil painter I used oil techniques. As an acrylic painter I use acrylic techniques. Oils can't do the acrylic techniques of shear, solvent etc. They have their own techniques. Both media are excellent and should be used with their own techniques.

I found this playlist when I was searching for desert landscape tutorials, so I started with your #4 Colorado video. Been watching the playlist in order since. Couple of questions; why do you use wooden boards and not canvas board or stretched canvas, and have you thought of doing a series of desert paintings (Utah rock formations, Nevada mountains, Arizona plains)? Having grown up in New England, I find those landscapes super interestng. Love all of your advice!

More wonderful art! Regarding thick paint and texture: Are you talking about 3D textures or optical textures? My full bodied professional acrylics always dry flat regardless of how much thick paint texture I lay in. Modelling compounds & gels are the only solution. Thanks for all your suggestions, information and explanations.

Actual 3D texture. It creates its own shadow and interest.

one thing I meant to ask, the paints I got are Winsor and Newton and they dry very fast but ive heard of some that stay wet for longer like Atelier and Golden Open, do your paints do this? I have to use what Ive got but as they run out can I use the other type along with the winsor and newton?
@JansenArtEducation4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynn, First, there will be many who say go ahead and mix brands. I don't. I have worked as a paint chemist and colorist for 4 different paint companies over the past 35 years. I can tell you as we developed products we never tested them with other brands for compatibility. Acrylics have numerous variations and not all work with each other. Golden and Winsor Newton are excellent companies. Many will give you all kinds of advice and say sure go ahead. Do yourself a favor and write the company for the information. I would write the companies and ask what they suggest to slow down the drying time. Golden open is really nice, not needed for how I paint and will not work with many techniques I use here, but it is very nice product as all Golden products are. One thing I was reading about it several years ago was thickness. You can't apply the paint in real thick layers or it will crack as it dries. This was a warning from the company. I haven't checked lately, but you might look into it. If it is still the same, it will not work with what I show in this video. I worked with Chroma for 18 years developing products. Nice company. They manufacturer my mother's line of paint. I don't know their current formula's now so you will have to check with them. They are medium rich like Golden which is a good thing to help you adjust the paint to what you like to do.

@@JansenArtEducation thankyou. As most of the colours seem to be Winsor and Newton i will stick with them as Im getting to know them a bit more. I did buy a couple of different brands to try as they were supposed to be runnier but I now think they dont actually combine that well.
