I love the Old West history stuff. It's become so mythologized, a lot of times it can be tough to separate the truth from the fiction.

I really like the idea of focused Q&As. This was an interesting dive into a historical figure and if you choose to do more focused Q&As in the future it will make it easier for us to go back and revisit that info again vs the typical free-for-all type.

Tombstone is one of my very favourite places to visit in the USA. The mythology and history make the story of the "difficulty" fascinating. My other favourite is The Little Bighorn battlefield, also because there is so much myth and legend built up around the actual facts.

I much prefer the historical, focused Q&A and your history content in general. The brutality and modern firearm tests are fun and well done, but there are so few folks doing good history of the American West that I feel these are a great service to the community as a whole. Thanks for keeping In Range alive!

Thanks, Karl, for clarifying, correcting inaccuracies, and dispelling broadly accepted mythology regarding the life and times of Wyatt Earp. There are a great deal of historical inaccuracies worldwide that could stand to be corrected, and most likely will never be.

The legendary cowboys who tamed the west with their 9mm lever gun lol Man they even hired Sam Elliot to narrate it. Went all out to make a total meme commercial. Still chuckling after seeing it

IMO that is one ugly assed gun. I'd be ashamed to be seen with it. To me it just screams wannabe....
@KR-hg8be2 жыл бұрын
@unclejohnbulleit2671 it's probably meant as a ca state special. A 9mm tacticool carbine that isn't a semi auto. Too bad it's hideous. A 9mm 1873 winchester would be fun.

Excellent video on the real Wyatt Earp. Water's "the Earp Brothers of Tombstone" was one of the first accurate accounts of the 'Old West' I ever read. I very much enjoy and appreciate this type of content. It's why I started supporting you several years ago. Keep it up!

To synthesize a few details: It seems quite ironic to me that the idolatry of Wyatt Earp is focused largely around worshipping a monied city-slicker who used excessive force as a lawman to tyrannically enforce unjust and over-reaching edicts... Even though most of America (or rural America at least) would probably find much more common cause with the Cowboys, and are even marketed to as though they are a Cowboy supporter, "Riding into town to exact justice upon the murderer Wyatt Earp." Excellent video as always - keep shining the light on lesser-known details from history!

I think there's a bit of nuance that gets missed when saying the gun used by Doc Holliday was just a "10 gauge". In the modern era we load our guns WAY heavier than the late Victorians really would have, and at this time a gun like this more than likely would have had 2-5/8" chambers loaded with between 1 ounce to 1-1/4 ounces of shot. In reality a 10 gauge cartridge of the 1880s wasn't really loaded all that differently than a 12 gauge is today, whereas the 12 gauge of the day would have been loaded closer to a modern day 20 gauge or 28 gauge. Funnily enough in the 1898 book "Hitting vs Missing with the Shotgun" by S.T. Hammond he recommends 5/8 ounce charges as being ideal for the 12 gauge, which is lighter than a lot of 3" 410s are loaded with these days.

What a well informed and level-headed approach to correcting myths and simply laying out facts. Near San Francisco, you can visit Wyatt Earp marker located in Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, a Jewish cemetery in Colma, California. Many other early California graves / monuments are located in the vicinity. The bodies and markers were all relocated to this area from earlier cemeteries so as to free up land further up peninsula. Definitely worth a visit! PS - San Francisco outlawed interments within city limits in 1900, then evicted all existing cemeteries in 1912.

This was great! I learned more about one of my favorite times in history than I ever have. I went to Tombstone, AZ in 2019 and was disappointed to see what a tourist trap it had become. They were even selling “replica wanted posters” of Wyatt and Doc, but the portraits on them were of Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer.

Thanks for explaining the actual common definition of "cowboy" or "cow-boy" in 19th century America. Its use was more closely similar to the British English use of the word. "Cowboys" would normally refer to themselves as "ranch hands" or "drovers"....
