Both teams played so well!!! Really shows what the league was made of in the 90s

It's amazing that a team with Sealy, Grant Hill, Grant Long, Williams, Joe Dumars, Hunter and Stackhouse didn't achieve more in 1998. I mean these were solid players.

I agree, but the league was loaded in 1998. Still though, this Pistons team definitely underperformed and should've ended the season with a winning record.

I don't think Doug Collins was a championship caliber coach. He was a good coach who could get you to the conference finals and maybe NBA finals but I don't think he was one to get a team over the top. Very much in the sense of a Jeff Van Gundy or Mike D'Antoni.

You can hear Phil talking to Mike at 4:05, "Pressure MJ" and then "STEVE!" when his defender gets the ball!

Steve wasn't playing denial defense. It defeats the effort and purpose of MJ pressuring the offensive player if it's easy for the offensive player to just get rid of the ball when he gets in trouble.

I find it astonishing that nearly a decade removed from their back to back chips, the Bad Boys were close to a three peat if they didn't lose to LA in '88 and Dumars is still at it with that walking triple double Grant Hill ...If I'm not mistaken, this was his final year. Between he and John Starks, I always enjoyed watching them take on the nightmare of a challenge of guarding MJ on every possession with his endless arsenal of moves year in and out ...and they both did the best one can do in attempting to contain "Midrange". 9:12 That crossover from Hill was vicious...but then Midrange takes it personally and gets him right back on the next two possessions....reminds me of AI from the season before. Both situations results in Bulls wins *shrugs*

Remember, the Pistons broke up their championship-contending team after 1990-91 when they didn't re-sign Vinnie Johnson/James Edwards for 1991-92... had they kept that team together, they could have kept things going and winning but that's why politics and business made #23 a champion. Then in 1992 during the off season they got rid of John Salley yet signed Olden Polynice so now they have help in their front line since Edwards but got rid of Salley, then they got rid of Woolridge and signed Alvin Robertson, so now they had another guard like Vinnie Johnson but they just needed a front line of Salley, Laimbeer, Polynice, Rodman, and Aguirre -- so now they just have two big men instead of the 3 they would have had with Salley, remember in 1991-92 they only had Salley/Laimbeer as centers/power forwards that were 6'10" to 7'0".

Thank you so much for posting the one game I was at The Palace to watch MJ as a Bull! I was in the nose bleed section above the Bulls bench it was AMAZING. He carried that team when Pip was still out.

why exactly did the pistons beat the bulls in 1988 1989 and 1990 but lose to them in 1991

Two words. BJ Armstrong. Isiah used to get the best of Paxon a lot. But when the Bulls drafted BJ in 1990 it wasn't long before Isiah struggled against a quicker, tenacious defender in BJ.
