January Bluefish, Striped Bass and Herring Fishing New Jersey. Kayak Fishing/Surf Fishing

Video is from the afternoon of Saturday Jan 2, 2015, launched the kayak, met up with friends, picked a couple fish up over the coarse of the day. I ended up with a nice Bluefish and a couple Striped Bass, missing a few others. At dusk the herring got real frisky and at times were swimming onto shore chasing 1/4" baitfish. At the very last hint of daylight I got a bite on a live Herring and landed my first fish from the Beach in 2016, a fat 31" Striper.

+Sea-Money Fishing it was a phenomenal run this year i wish i was able to spend more time back in Jersey so i could of taken advantage. Went to lake the other day to try and get one more open water fishing vid in but it was frozen solid haha. Im hoping this warmer weekend will melt it so i can get out one more time and fines fish some bass. if not i guess its ice fishing time or CT for holdover stripers.

+RH421939 Yea I fished seaside to bay head and the water had gotten dirty and didn't see nearly as many herring.... of coarse I was in the wrong place at the wrong time as some guys scored some 20-30lbers from the beach

+Adam Burhani This was in Central NJ around IBSP. It was slow, but there are still fish hanging around up there. It's kind of a crap shoot by now though, fewer fish... colder... this might be the last time I try until april. we'll see what happens!

+Tanner Virden You can also use Atlantic Herring in Delaware, the problem is they're pretty rare to catch from shore. The River Herring are the ones that are illegal, which consist of Alewives and Blueback Herring. There are other species of herring as well but the only ones illegal to keep are the River Herring

+Tanner Virden Any herring you run into right now in the ocean will be the atlantic herring, theres actually a whole bunch around right now, even in Delaware as I saw a video from IRI of a big school feeding on the surface a couple weeks ago. The main difference is these atlantics are more cigar shaped, skinnier. Come april and may you'll find the alewives first, followed by the bluebacks in the tidal creeks. The alewives are shaped like bunker, pretty rounded, usually about 6"-8" long. The bluebacks are smaller and usually run in May here in PA/NJ.

Thanks! I will definitely look into the clash! By the way, I found out that my mojo inshore is the same model as yours. I believe that these past few days ended it this year for my fishing... Time to untangle all my lures and put my reels away until spring! Also, What pound braid would you recommend I should I put on myinshore and live-lining rod?

+Sea-Money Fishing I was kiddin i figured he was out since morning i seen on video you put in after them, no really i give all you guys credit in them kayaks going out there, sometimes i feel small out there in my 18 ft bass boat. One wrong move and your in the water which isnt the worst part your fishing rods & reels and gear go in that sucks. I use to own a one man fishing pontoon i use to book around lakes with my minkota ss 3hp electric motor that was one wrong move and you were in trust me i found that out once when i was standing taking a leak lol btw do you have instagram page

+edward kosinski Yea something like that. Always check the wind and wave forecast, but yes west winds lay the ocean flat, as they blow off the shoreline, so even in 30mph winds the water next to the beaches will be flat.

i go trolling and casting with my boat too. i have used a maxrap and a xrap in the same time but i have caught more with the maxrap! try it you wont be dispointed! if you are looking for a great striper lure you could consider trying the sp minnow of daiwa!

i'm a little confused… i fish for largemouth all spring summer and early fall in MD. Once it gets cold in the fall i got over to saltwater and have loads of success. Im Fishing right where the patuxent river meets the chesapeake.

+jcorish90 I too was torn between the boat and hobie. I bought a hobie in 09 and sold it after a year because I thought it was a pain to fish off. 5 years later I bought another, I like it more this time around. Boat would be nice but in order for it to be worth it you need at least a 16' which adds a bunch of work between trailering/maintaining/storing. Kayak is more manageable and can honestly handle choppy seas better than a boat the same size.

I live on Mv and I was fishing for largemouth in a pond right next to salt water and I noticed there were a bunch of peanut bunker so I did a cast and caught a 25-26 inch striped bass, in January. I was so surprised

+Gigabyte I'm on Nantucket, We have saltwater ponds here that keep striped bass in them all year. I would love to catch one from the beach though. There's talk of pollock coming in close enough to catch during the winter months. I should jump to your island for some largemouth! Which ponds are you getting them in?

+Lonell Rodgers funny thing is this weekend I was Trying to jig for mackerel and caught a fish about 12" long and later found out it was a polluck! I was at the memorial wharf in edgartown. As for the bass I was fishing at the oak bluffs water pond, it's a pond right next to a harbor, like 10 ft inbetween. For the large mouth I would snag a live penute bunker from the salt water then live bait it and catch them.

+Kevin Merslich Its tricky to start the process but once you start trying it you get it together. Definitely get comfortable fishing from shore before you attempt it in a kayak, but other than that just do it as often as possible and you will get better every time out.

Yea that would work. Literally any color they make but especially the white/green/silver seems to work, and the smaller the size the better... although you could have caught those herring on any color or size sabiki that day in this video as they were aggressively feeding

Hey so I fish in New Jersey as well and I work on a head boat in avalon I was fishing on my 17 footer a few weeks ago caught a bunch of schoolies and herring at night, found out it's apparently illegal to harvest herrring in jersey I knew it was illegal in PA but is is allowed in Jersey?
