You've touched on so many things I hope we get to see your follow-up on. Candling pine trees, how the smoke bushes and willows turn out, results of overwintering perennials in raised beds... Beautiful garden somehow still looking full in winter! I bet you spend much more time in the back than the front, but I can picture the two front yard island beds expanding towards one another until there's just a pathway between- kind of like your hydrangea room entrance but without the arbor.

You know we thought about doing that but they are a lot further apart than it might look. I think it would look nice to have them bigger but right now I think they are staying the same size!

I love all your walkabouts and the plans that you share. You have made a beautiful landscape. It is so fun to watch and listen to you. I hope the deer don't eat your new asters and coneflowers. They love to eat mine, as well as dayliles, hydrangeas, rhododendron, holly, hosta and more. But I grow so much of them all that I still have lots of blooms.

I've used lots of deer repellents that contain coyote urine. Lately I've used a product called Deer Out that is mostly peppermint oil, with garlic, pepper, and rotten eggs, but it smells like peppermint to me and I don't notice the rotten eggs. When deer browse my hydrangeas I just consider it a Chelsea Chop, and I get more blooms in late summer. I grow about 80 varieties of Daylily, and mostly I let the deer have some, especially early in the season when I have so many of each variety. But for my cherished late season daylillies, that bloom in late August through mid October, I spray them when the buds are almost full size. "Our" deer like to eat daylily buds the evening or morning before they are about to open. I am in Massachusetts in the same zone as you but we're still covered in snow. Thank you again for your wonderful videos. I worry about you standing out in the rain. Take care.@@growformegardening

Just love your channel. It feels like you are taking us along the process, which I gratefully appreciate. On the downspout erosion. When I bought my home, my career left no time for gardening, but we had a great garden nursery who went to town on my front. He put drain pipes from the downspout under the garden beds and curved up into the yard for any heavy excess water . Very rarely do I see any come out. This was 25 years ago, so not sure what is new and improved, but fortunately, mine is still working.

I really like the garden tours. It's great to see the progression of the landscape throughout the seasons. I think it would be a good idea to plant some daffidoil bulbs. They have it in stations you can use the wire to hold it on ground or hang rom whatever you want to protect. It's also in a spray, I have many host's and as long as you spray or put out stations before deer get taste of plant it's been working great. The brand you mentioned never worked for me. Very inspiring garden tour. I’m dreaming of turning a large portion of my front yard into a shrub and perennial garden and many of your plants are going on my wish list. (Regarding the runoff problem at the corner of the house, red twig dogwoods really appreciate “wet” areas; have you considered maybe moving that closer to the wet spot? That won’t solve the excess water but it’s just a thought). My favorite chuckle of the video: If you have a friend who is an owl or a hawk or a fox, send him to our garden. LOL!!! 😂

Hi Guys -just to let you know, unless PW has done major refinements , Eucomis is an absolute giant blob of slime after it blooms. I finally gave all of mine the heave-ho this year . I'm in Z9 Northern California. They grow well here but the post bloom mess was just too much . I probably moved the clump to 3 different locations to try to camouflage the aftermath and finally gave up. A very large container that you can hide in an 'offstage' spot is a good solution. By the way, your fortitude in strolling you garden in what looks like damp snow-ish cold is impressive to this zone 9 weather wimp. I'd have to buy a new wardrobe.

I need to do a walkabout in my winter garden to see where I can make some changes. For a dark shrub, I really like elderberry. I have mine in full sun among my panicle hydrangeas and pale pink roses. It grows fairly large in a season, but I cut it back hard in the spring to keep it sized appropriately for my back yard. I "mulched" my agastache with gravel. I read they don't like rich soil...not an issue in my very sandy soil. 🥴 That might solve your heaving problem. I just got a cordless leaf blower and want to get outside now (January!) to blow leaves into a pile where I want to visualize a new island bed/berm. I plan to plant dwarf conifers and trees and shrubs so the setting sun won't poke me in the eye when I'm at the kitchen sink. Come on spring! I've got so many projects in mind. EDIT: I just got to the part where you said you haven't had much luck growing elderberry. Maybe it could be more successful in a different spot. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had issues with mice as well. But then I found out about the mixture of 50% baking powder and 50% cornmeal. You just mix it together on a plate and leave it outside near where you believe the mice to be and within a month they are completely gone and they never come back. I put a little cage over mine, so that larger animals cannot disturb it. I put a couple of bricks on top of it so raccoons can’t knock the cage over. But mice can still get in. Every winter I freshen the plate just in case there’s any mice that are coming back.

I enjoyed your walk through today! What zone are you in? I’m in the Upstate of SC and sometimes they say it’s 7b and sometimes 8a? I am disabled but enjoy my garden of flowers. How did you get Proven Winners to use you as a test site? Since I am disabled I can’t afford to buy the things I want for my garden and would love to hook up with them! All my neighbors walking by always ask about my flowers so I finally had to get plaques made for the ones in front. If you could help me I would appreciate it so much!

What about putting purple bell vine in a container to crawl up the pergola? The container would allow you to trial the vine look without committing to cutting the landscape fabric. That’s what Erin, The Impatient Gardener, grows on her posts.

Suggestion on climber. David Austin uses twine to tie around columns. What about a downspout trellis or the half Essex trellis. James Galway is supposed to be shorter climber and few thorns. I love my rise up roses. Wonderful scent. Too bad the new Oso Easy En Fuego and Rise Up Emberays only gets 4-5 feet since it’s the fire pit. Bougainvillea is a big shedder so make sure a place you can blow the flowers petals away easily. I did see a multiple colored one that was beautiful in Waikiki.

@@growformegardening I ordered James Galway for this year. It was a toss up with Strawberry Hill. Can’t wait to see what you do and see how James does at my home this spring. If you moved Gertrude Jekyll she might bee too tall in that location and a bit thorny for the relaxing area it is.

Just curious if you cold stratified the agastache seeds. I’m trying cold stratification followed by indoor sowing, with my agastache and other native perennial seeds, which is a new process for me. I know that some say it can work without cold stratification.

Love the idea of a flowering vine growing up the pergola post. A Clematis might be just the ticket. Are you familiar with Alla of Linden Grove Gardens? She is a beautiful Ukranian gardener featured in Floret's documentary Gardening in a War Zone. She grows unique Clematis vines and sells the seeds, which helps provide food for her family.
