1 of my fav. winter baits that i guarantee NO ONE else is fishing...a white or shad color 9" Slug-go...that big, lazy action with slight twitches falling through the water column resembles the big shad ive seen that are dying off Jan-Feb...not sure the type of shad, but they are large..gizzard perhaps..that 9" slug-go is a great bait for bigger bass

I got on one of the absolute best days ever in January in WV years ago throwing a jerk shad bait but dead sticking it. We couldn't get bit on anything and I had read a article in a really old bass masters magazine about dead sticking straight tail worms in cold water. This was well over 20 years ago and the magazine was probably 15+ years old that I read it in. My cousin laughed at me when I rigged up the soft jerk bait but 10 minutes and two 5lb bass later he had one on. It was a absolute epic day for big bass. He's dead now but it's one of my best ever memories of fishing with him. R.I.P. Larry.

@@michaelsheppard4227 soft jerks are my confidence baits...this year, my PB came on a 7" Googan Dart...just over 7 lbs., which is a trophy on ohio....caught multiple 5's, as well...funny u say that about deadsticking..last year, I was throwing the huge 9" Slug-go...the wind started blowing my kayak, so I had to screw with that while my bait was just laying on the bottom..finally got able to get back to the lure, and a big largemouth had it..started reeling, thinking I had a tree that big mouth came up to the top of the water with my bait..got so nervous, didn't even set the hook and she spit it...looked possibly over 7..I still think about that giant bait hanging from her mouth

@@andybales7318 that just goes to show how often we fisherman fish way to fast. When we was dead sticking them water was around 37 degrees and just as the bait would sink low enough to the point you couldn't see it anymore you'd see a big flash , then it was on. Every fish that day was 4+ most was over 5. Never been able to duplicate it. Now I live in Alabama so water (so far) hasn't got near cold enough to have to dead stick.

I'm in NY and there is still some good grass not a lot but enough to keep the bass happy what about blade baits lol 😅

I don't know why companies discontinue making great baits. I really bothers me that they do this. The suspending jerkbait by XCalibur is the EXX4 (Edwin Evers Series). If you know how or where I can get the Blue Nib one and others, please let me know. Unfortunately, when I find them on ebay, they want $25 a piece. whew!

Hi Mike! Here in south LA, in January this year on three trips, I caught my limit three times even after throwing several back in a landlocked lake. I caught most of them on an XCalibur suspending jerkbait and a Yamoto Heart Tail swimbait. Unfortunately, neither is made anymore. I also caught a few Texas rigging a blue/black creature bait. Sheesh! In December of 2021, I caught a few limits on two trips in a brackish water bayou, using another discontinued bait, a XCalibur lipless crankbait (Black/CHROME) shad. Anyway, I went a few times this week and caught them at nightfall on the same XCalibur jerkbait again. I lost the jerkbait I had, but found one on ebay thankfully and put it right to work with good results.

The stunna is a slow sinking bait. So if your not in a very deep area those long pauses could get ya snagged on bottom. Just be careful with those long pauses with that particular bait guys.

Has anyone tried the new Elite Shad Rap from Rapala? Does the construction allow you to easily drill between the front hook hanger and lip to insert a tungsten nail weight for neutral bouyancy? Or, does the internal structure in that area stop a drill?

Color is the best jerk bait color water clarity of 2 -4 feet? I m in mid Florida. I fish the bank. Canals are roughly 4 -8 feet deep

Alot of guys will say this color or that color for very specific conditions. I fish a jerk bait probably more than I should. I am addicted to the jerk bait bite in cold water. Every year I can't wait for cold water so that bite is strong. In my experiences I've found you just have to be ready to try many different colors and listen to the fish and especially listen to them when it comes to throwing deep or shallow jerk baits. This past February I had the color dialed in but was throwing a deep jerk bait and the fish stopped eating as good. Tried different colors and no bites at all went back to the dialed in color and they would hit it but not eat it as good or just swipe at it. Switched to a shallow model same color same brand and caught a 9.4 in 18-22 feet of water and every fish that hit the shallow bait was getting all 3 sets of hooks. The pros say the color I was throwing is for bright sunny days and super clear water but it was really cloudy, no sun at all and not gin clear water. It wasn't muddy but instead of 15 feet of visibility it was more like 5-8 foot visibility. Just my experiences.

Every color will work to an extenet... Something that matches most of the forage fish color is probably best. I wouldn't get too wrapped up on it. Instead, vary up your speed and cadence. That's the real thing to vary.... some days they'll eat it slow and some days they won't touch it unless you appeal to their reaction instincts.

Here in FL, my experience has been that there's often no rhyme or reason to what color they might want. I've used the exact same lure/soft plastic in 5-6 different colors before finding what they wanted on a particular day. Then the next day it might be a totally different color. I think white is the most versatile color because it takes on the color of its surroundings, but you just never know.
