Great video! I own 4 different aibos and i love them. Aibos are not for everyone but they found their place in lots of human hearts. Sony is even worse nowadays with their current aibo. It has much more advanced encryption and uses sony's servers to do a lot of things. I understand sony needs to make money but this cloud service subscription in consumer robots is terrible, especially when it doesn't even need internet to do 99% of the functions.
@Lizuma2 жыл бұрын
This cloud thing in robots nowadays definitely sucks. I’m not renewing my 1000s plan when it expires, especially since it’s a ridiculously overpriced rip off. 1000s luckily function quite well without the cloud else I would’ve never paid so much for one. I love that the older aibos I have (210 and 111) run on memory sticks instead.

@@JanusCycle I have been into aibos into some time now, but haven't been able to get one. I have a question, since so many people are hating on aibo that it's not a living animal, and like you stated in your older video about aibo's mind that they are nothing like a biological pet but offers a different experience, how could I explain it to people? I mean, most of my friends saw a video of the American philosopher and musician "Jaron Lainer" back in 2000 breaking an Aibo ers 210 and traumatizing more than 300 people in a cybersalon interview, which is pretty depressing, as he explains that "it's not life" and claims he was trying to make people understand what is real and what is not, and he believed that the aibos were sort of like an anti-human creation. I don't believe that at all to be honest. But then again, How different are they compared to living pets and what makes the experience truely unique? Btw, I love Willow, she's such a precious pup!
@JanusCycle9 ай бұрын
@@apple_macos_finder9853 This sort of discussion is often better suited to email, but let's try and do this in KZbin comments. Be aware that I don't get notified of all replies. KZbin automatically filters out many notifications becuse I get so many comments. I do believe that Jaron Lainer has spent a lot of time with technology and virtual reality. From that perspective he clearly sees how too much time with technology can be unhealthy (anti-human). He therefore has a valid point there, and I also understand his modern take on social media being a problem. Most people already know these basic lessons about technology though. This then leads to the mainstream materialist view in Western culture that technology is just a thing to be used.
@JanusCycle9 ай бұрын
@@apple_macos_finder9853 But there is another perspective. For example when humans lived in tribal groups, technology such as water carrying tools, fire starting tools, hunting tools, were much more vital to survival. You couldn't just buy these things either. You had to work and spend time making them, or being gifted them from an elder like a treasure. We formed a relationship with our technological pieces that was much more significant then. If you talk to someone today about their phone, car or house. There are still glimmers of the significant relationships we form with the individual pieces of technology in our life. Though this is usually more recognized when thinking about things from our past. Hence the nostalgia that forms when we see our old devices again after some time. This is also a big part of why people like to watch this channel :)
@JanusCycle9 ай бұрын
@@apple_macos_finder9853 If you can invoke in someone the acknowledgement of how they feel about their past, or even current devices, or even their house. Then you might be able to explain the feeling of having a living relationship with a robot. It's like living with a biological pet, with all the complexities that come with that. Only the way we care for them and the way they respond to us is quite different. But that doesn't make this different type of experience or relationship any less significant. This can even lead to a more Buddhist understanding of existence. Unfortunately we live in a world today in a crisis of meaning. Most people don't have the ability to consider what is truly significant in their lives. Many people in Western culture are distracted by materialism, having status, acquiring power and getting attention. If someone is not willing to consider other perspectives, then you may never be able to explain the experience of having a robot companion. I do hope you are able to find people that are open enough to consider these ideas and curious enough to want to know more about life :)

It's amazing how civilised and respectful the Aibo community is. Even with all the tooling available, piracy was not a problem. If everyone was like that, we could have nice things again (no DRM protected software, games without kernel mode anticheat to allow them to run on Linux)
@voidmain7902 Жыл бұрын
It becomes a lot more complicated when piracy sometimes is the only way to preserve something. I wonder how AIBO community is managing this as I'm genuinely concerned that some personalities might just lost forever due to the community being "civilized and respectful". Flash memories die. They all do. When no one backs them up they will be lost. It's just a matter of time. Saying the robot itself has less durability isn't an excuse either since one could theoretically make an AIBO emulator that runs a virtual version in VR and can use the personalities for example.

Though I've never used those services, we have chatted and the owner seems dedicated to helping. The good news is you would only need to send the head. I bought a re-celled battery about ten years ago. I've been using all my knowledge of looking after a li-ion battery when using it and storing it over that time. I don't run my AIBO that often. So far it still seems to be at 90% condition. I did try and re-cell my old battery but the control board had failed. I don't know why.
@JanusCycle2 жыл бұрын
I only know bits about the various models. This is my own perspective from what I have gathered over time. First generation ERS-110/111, These don't have voice commands. There is some third party software but not too much. I think the second generation is a worthwhile improvement over this model. If I had one I would certainly appreciate it and look after it. Second generation ERS-210/220, These are the most common with the most units sold, with lots of third party software and tools. The best for tinkering with and programming in my opinion. I love my second generation as you may be able to tell from this video. I want to get back to making my custom personality that I started making many years ago. ERS-310/311, A slightly physically simpler and cuter version of the ERS-210/220. But with less custom software available. The ERS-210/220 can run ERS-310/311 software, but many software functions don't perform well on the ERS-210/220. This model has the least appeal to me. They are cute though. I would care for one if I had one. ERS-7, The third generation. Has all the functions of the second generation models plus a bit more. All their software seems to come on just one stick called AIBO MIND. Less third party custom software though. Plays with a bone, as well as the ball that all models have. I've never really watched these much in videos. They are the most mysterious model to me. The above models were all discontinued in 2006 ERS-1000, The modern AIBO from 2018, very expensive and also requires an ongoing subscription. Paid with a Japanese or U.S. credit card for full AI performance. Looks really nice in videos with fluid movement and up to date specifications. I would love to get one. But I'm actually quite poor, I own no assets except all the wonderful junk I've collected over the years. I'm also living well below the poverty line in Australia. But I love exploring technology and making these videos. So I'm determined to keep trying to make a real KZbin channel.
@JanusCycle2 жыл бұрын
One more very important note on the second generation ERS-210/220. They don't have build in WiFi. For full tinkering and programming it's best to get the WiFi card that slots into AIBO. Either the AIBO branded WiFi card or the VAIO branded equivalent PCWA-C150S. These both appear to be almost impossible to find. I was extremely lucky to find out in a forum post many years ago about the VAIO equivalent card working in AIBO. Then to actually find one for sale.
