Japan Airlines Business Class - Tokyo Narita to Sydney (JL 771) - Boeing 787-9

After coming off a British Airways flight from London Heathrow (BA 5), I head to the Japan Airlines First Class lounge to freshen up before my flight to Sydney. I spend a few hours here reviewing the lounge environment/ambience, seating, staff service, food/drink offerings, shower/spa and business facilities.
I head to the gate early to board JL 771, which is a Japan Airlines Boeing 787-9. Priority boarding is well organised for Business Class and Oneworld status guests, but there are a LOT of them! The B787-9 has 44 SkySuite seats spread out over two Business Class cabins. I review the SkySuite seat in immense detail throughout the flight, with a focus on the different seating positions, storage spaces, legroom, seat space, IFE, lighting and so forth. During the 9 hour flight, two meals are served - dinner and breakfast - and I enjoyed how there are both Japanese and Western food options. Throughout the flight, passengers have access to a dine-anytime menu with various of meals and snacks to choose from. I get to sample the lie-flat bed on this red-eye flight. Although the cushioning of the seat and pillow is on the firm side, I still get a good night’s rest. The SkySuite is very private due to the hardshell and wall partitions surrounding the seat. A decent amenity kit by Zero Halliburton is provided, as well as a Japan Airlines jacket (not pyjama) to keep you warm throughout the flight
Although the flight departed Tokyo late, the pilots did an impressive job making up for lost time such that we landed early in Sydney. Being a Business Class passenger, I was able to disembark the plane early to be reunited with my priority-tagged luggage.

We've flown to Japan a few times, but always economy, but we've been saving our miles and reward points, so we're very looking forward to a whole new experience! Thanks for the video! I've seen a lot of trip reports out there but this is one is the best, if not the best!!! You give nice detailed info and more importantly you dont "rush" your camera work. You give a really good impression of this flight, nice and relaxt. A lot of the the tripreports out there just rush trough it, not taking enough time to give a good impression. Making it all look shaky and uninteresting. And also major points on the background music it really fits the video not to loud and not to soft and thank god not the same 3 min song on repeat the entire time. Excellent work mate 10/10

Thanks for the comment. I really like how they split the menu into Western vs Japanese to give you a variety of different food. I should've tried some of the Western food to see how good the quality was. I found the Japanese meals pretty good, but I can't say how well they compared with stuff you'd get at a good Japanese restaurant. Cabin crew kept speaking to me in Japanese! Must've thought I looked like I was from Japan. A few crew members speak English reasonably well, but most have just basic English skills. Nevertheless, they treated me very well! :)

The world is big! I fly HK to Sydney and that's already 9 hrs. Tokyo is further north so definitely 9-10 hrs! :) I need to try their competitor, ANA. They fly 787s also and they have a very good business class product. Take care

The Japanese food was a refreshing option as I usually have Western food on an airplane. Nice to try something different. The only disappointing thing was on the other JL flight I took on this trip, the Japanese menu was the same :( Was hoping for a bit of variety, especially when the other flight was on a completely different route. Looks amazing, mate. Although I do agree, on the plating of some of the meals, JAL kinda falls down vs other airlines like Singapore or Cathay. But the product though, A+.

I think SQ food is top notch, but I say CX has a lot of progress to go. They are OK in business class, but there's something about their food that just doesn't compare with the likes of SQ or EK. It's 4-star rather than 5-star IMO...it just needs to the extra oomph in presentation, plating and taste

That's why I've saving up those miles...but which first class to spend them on? That is still a question I am having trouble solving!

You seem to be very well-versed - so maybe you can enlighten me. I’ve heard amazing things about Japanese rice and that it stands head and shoulders above most other species of rice worldwide. I believe JAL's software (customer service) is top 10% in airline industry. However, I really don't like its hardware (2-2-2 business class seat configuration) for long haul flight. SQ and CX are used 1-2-1 for all tran Pacific flight and I love it.

For 2-2-2, I think this is done well. Better than the old Qantas SkyBed where it isn't very private at all. And much better than the 2-4-2 Club World seat!!!! :O

I wouldn't recommend BA Club World, unless it's the only business class option on the route and it's heavily discounted. Although it ticks the bare minimums for business class, if you have other options for the same price...go with the other options! :)

I know airlines sometimes serve the cheap champagne before take off then serve the expensive one during the flight so they pay less alcohol tax. But I'm not sure about the plastic glass? Maybe it's easier to serve prior to take off?
