Japan Airlines fireball: passenger videos record their miracle escape | BBC News

Passengers on board the passenger jet recorded their miracle escape from death after a horrific collision on the runway of Haneda airport in Tokyo.
The JAL Airbus was engulfed in flames as it landed after colliding with a small coastguard plane. All 379 passengers and 12 crew on board the airliner survived the disaster.
5 people on the coastguard plane died in the accident. The small plane had been en route to deliver aid to victims of Japan’s earthquake in the country’s Nota peninsula.
Shortly after the passenger jet was evacuated it was overcome by fire. The authorities have begun an urgent investigation into how the two planes came to collide.

It's terribly sad about the coast guard plane. I understand that the people who lost their lives were preparing to head off to a disaster zone. They were helpful heroes and it's tragic that some oversight caused this accident. Airports are very difficult to keep safe. I imagine this airport is very busy as it is in Tokyo. I understand the air traffic control jobs in these sorts of airports are like S+ level of difficulty. It's amazing how well the crew and systems of the passenger jet worked to get everyone off safely. The picture of the burning plane had me scared that this was one of those crashes that killed everyone on both aircrafts.

Yea.. thank god the aircraft didnt explode halfway when its moving on the tarmac. Also thank god upon landing or evacuating nobody at the exit row decide to open the doors.. some would do that in such panic situation. And thank god everyone remain calm and remain at their seats until told to evacuate by the crew.. lastly thank god the crew and pilot are well train and know their thing.. hence everyone got out safely and quickly.. Was it the fault of the Coast Guard? They were on an active runway that was landing wide-body aircraft. A great testament to the airliner's crew in effecting a swift evacuation and the emergency crews on the ground doing their bit professionally and expeditiously. I recently read about the Saudi L-1011 that returned to the airport after an in-flight fire in 1980. Several minutes after landing the firemen were standing around watching the plane burn because the engines were still running and they couldn't approach. When they finally did gain entry after some twenty minutes the aircraft flashed over and nobody escaped alive. It's a sign of how far we've come in terms of safely evacuating, no doubt further enhanced by the efficiency of the Japanese people. RIP to those onboard the Coastguard aircraft.

Obviously mid-air collisions, catastrophic structural failure and planted explosives can skew that a bit, but they're really quite rare (Again, more so today, thank Christ.) It is not a miracle that all passengers survived, but thanks to the precise actions of the cabin crew. The cabin crew had judged the exits that could be opened in a cabin engulfed in flames, and had given precise instructions to escape without their luggage. As the telephone lines to the cockpit were disconnected, the cabin crew in the back seat had to use their own judgement to determine an escape route. In the end, three of the eight escape exits were usable. Finally, the captain took a final look around the cabin and evacuated the few remaining passengers before making the final escape. It was not a miracle, but it was brave.

Thanks to everyone staying calm the evacuation went smoothly - the crew's yelling is necessary to make them heard, they've been trained to scream and yell in that way to keep the passengers informed in an evacuation situation. This might not sound like much, but after seeing the news that a plane was on fire, I felt like I should prayer for the safety of everyone on board. It might not sound like much, but when I found it everyone on the large plane was safe I truly understood that God is good and really there. ‘Chaos and panic’? I don’t think so. Relative calm and discipline considering, I heard distressed children, but they were polite. All credit to the Cabin Crew who guided everyone out, and credit to the passengers for not selfishly taking luggage and sticking to instructions. Not a miracle. If I am unlucky enough to be in a similar situation I hope it is on a JAL flight.

This is probably because Japanese people are taught to respect authority and instructions, it did not look like anyone took their luggage (unlike other passengers in similar situations), those seconds combined saved all the people. Amazing professionalism of the crew!

This is basically like one of those many near miss collisions we've heard about, where planes were on the same runway or same airspace, except they didn't miss this time. There seems to be an issue all around with air control and crowdedness at airports.

It's not miracle. It just every crew on the plane dealing with the situation professional way and follow the emergency procedure perfectly. Also the passenger react to the situation calmly and just follow the cabin crew instruction, which is i'm not suprise because the discipline that japanese people have. If this happen to america airline with american passenger, everyone would be dead already.

On board 'chaos'? Actually no - given what was happening, those folk looked like they were remarkably calm and following instructions. RIP to those who died, but those on the Airbus survived because they /didn't/ descend into chaos. Perhaps you could have given some acknowledgement to the calm actions of the passengers under extreme conditions, instead of trying to dramatise the horrific event.

Given that both Pilots survived, it'll be crucial in investigating communications between them and Air Traffic Control, specifically what they were told to do by ATC. So sad that Japan has had this double tragedy right at the start of the new year

According to info from mentour the dash 8 was told to hold but entered runway without permission. So sadly looks like a miss communication that has cost lives of 5 people and if god willing he does. Dash 8 pilot will be left to carry the can. But still early and bea flying in from france to help the JTSB with investigation.

These passengers and crew of this Japanese Airliners, are maybe the luckiest 379 people of 2024 so far, thank God and Airbus plus the crew of this airliner too! Though it is still sad news the 5 Japanese Coast Guard personnel, were killed in this air crash in Japan, plus one Japanese Coast Guard member seriously injured too..
