Brilliant Vid. I think on a long train journey as this was i would have stops to stretch my legs. ekiben look nice to eat. Also Japanese trains seem very clean. Your ice cream reminds me of a Scottish treat called tablet. It is condensed milk and lots of sugar and we put it in the fridge for a day. You break of a piece let it disolve in your mouth it is so sweet and gives you an energy rush.😊

As usual I'm blown away about how much high quality food you can get at the train stations in Japan - those Ekiben boxes are absolutely brilliant, and I would so much love to try some of them! 😍 Here in Denmark we can only get some really overpriced junkfood crap, like really shitty pizza slices, equally as shitty pigs in a blanket, sandwiches that would've been better to days ago, and so on... train food really really sucks here in Denmark. 😒

Agreed about the overpriced garbage in Danish train stations. I'm Swedish but have lived and worked in Copenhagen... Not to mention that the platform kiosks at the S-tog part of central station charge more for a lukewarm latte than they do for an ice cold beer (at least that was the case for me one morning when I went to work in I think 2010) The only food I miss from Denmark at all is Pølsehorn because those were crazy good most of the time! I'd even buy them at Bilka at times just because of how good they were, and if the 7 Eleven or DSB Kiosk had Pølsehorn when I went in there, I almost always got one 😂

The shinkansen are so clean (of course! Everything in Japan is so clean!) The seating upholstery was very pretty. What a splendid view you had of Fuji-san! I loved your comments about the ice cream. "Praline" is a candy made with pecans, brown sugar, and butter. The city in which I live is famous for its pralines.

Rode from Tokyo to Osaka and back few months ago, will never forget the experience (as well as those tasty Ekibans.) Japan is such a first class, lovely country. (P.S. there is no comparison between the Shinkansen and Amtrak Acela.)

I like your trains in Japan, modern, clean, quiet, secure and in time AND quick. Compared to Germany very dirty, never in time, very unsecure (many kills in trains), and slow so unbelievable slow, loud, uncomfartable. I will visit Japan in half a year and I am already so exited. And I like the food, wow how nice it looks. Thank you for showing. The New Green gouvernment thinks, go back to traveling of 200 years ago is the best way to travel for a country developping back from industrie to medival. And staying at home is the best. No car, no plain, no train.

If you use non-reserved seats, you can take any train you like on the specified date. You can also get off the train at any station along the way and drop in at a restaurant inside the ticket gate. However, you cannot go back in the opposite direction. There is only progress. 自由席を利用するのであれば、指定した日の間なら好きな列車に乗ることができます。途中駅で列車を下車して改札内の飲食店に立ち寄ることもできます。ただし、逆方向に戻ることはできません。前進あるのみです。

Whenever I take the shinkansen, I will buy the reserve seat ticket. I didn't realise that with a non-reserve seat ticket, we can leave the train. That is great. Thank you for explaining!

Train travel and food, one of the best combinations. I would love to be able to buy ice cream on the train in warm weather. Does anyone know if ekiben are designed to not include foods that would smell very strong, so they don't annoy the people sat nearby? I know certain things are frowned upon on the train, like taking phone calls, which would be ok in the UK.

Most Ekiben meals contain cooked or prepared foods that are either chilled or room temperature, which minimizes aromas. Also, the Shinkansen trains possess advanced air filtration systems which efficiently handle odors and smells. I've ridden those trains multiple times and didn't notice smells from Ekiben.

Basically, the plants that can be purchased at the station premises are made so that they can be eaten on the train. However, I do not recommend the takoyaki shop okonomiyaki in Osaka. smells pretty strong

Saw a video by Tokyo Creative a few days ago. They said ekibens are over-rated. I disagree, sure there is tastier food in restaurants, but as travel/train food, it's hard to beat. Never saw better train food in the world.

In Japan, two tickets are basically required to board a limited express train like the Shinkansen. One is a train ticket, which is used to settle the fare from the place of departure to the destination. The other is a limited express ticket, which is a ticket that you pay for the title of a service that moves at high speed.

Most Ekiben (bentos for train trips) consist of cooked, marinated, or pickled foods that are intended to be eaten at room temperature. Additionally, the meals are meant to be consumed on the same day which they are prepared.

There is a traditional art of making bento. Part of it is, as mentioned, selecting foods that don't go bad. For example, the roast beef has a high sodium content, which reduces water and therefore microbial growth. If you look at 18:10, you see the plastic leaf thing. Traditionally, that would be the haran leaf, or Aspidistra elatior (or similar) which has a natural antibacterial chemical. Today, that plastic thing is coated with EDTA preservative.

You can think of it like picnic food. Most Ekiben consist of cooked, marinated, or pickled foods that are intended to be eaten at room temperature. If it is chilled, allow it to come to room temperature before eating.
