Japan has a CAT as STATION MASTER and we wanna see why!

I used this video as a guide for my tour in Wakayama last November 2019. Thanks Cathy Cat for making this video! This was a huge help for me. I met Station Master, Nitama at Kishi Station. I also met Yontama, although she was fast asleep during the time I stopped at Idakiso Station. I spent most of my 2 hours in Kishi Station because it had a souvenir shop and a cafe, so I had a lot of time hanging out there. I saw all the different train designs going by, so I was really happy, and got to ride on the TAMADEN (Tama Train). I also dropped by Tama's shrine and paid my respects. I remember riding the train from JR Wakayama station to Kishi, and all the passengers with me were all high school students coming from school. It was so funny and awkward being the only foreigner at that time, especially as the area is just so laid back. I was lucky it was a beautiful sunny day, because I had travelled from Nagoya going to Wakayama and had to go back the same day. I guess I spent a max 4 hours probably at the Wakayama Railway area, just adoring the place. I took so many pictures. I hope to visit again, next time with friends.

Haha, I went to see the original Tama many, many years ago. Unfortunately she died, but I see her successor is also very cute. ^^; Oh, and now I understand why they have the Tama streetcar in Okayama. ^___^

At first, I thought it was kind of mean that they keep the cats in such a small cabinet, but she clearly wanted to go back inside when the attendant started to open the door. I guess she likes it in there.

There seems to be a compartment that lets the cats hide away when not wanting the attention. And the host keeps talking about them being able to "roam around" when not on display duty. Would be interesting to see what that entails. I mean, since these are cash cats (as opposed to cash-cows) so to speak, keeping them healthy and happy is good for business. While most cats I know of usually roam around areas of several square kilometers I guess these ones at least get to walk around a good chunk of the station. Maybe shielded from prying eyes behind the scenes. Although...though I admit I am more of a dog person, I am a bit dissapointed in the clear lack of cardboard boxes at the station. :P

jmalmsten Oh, I gathered that they aren’t in the cabinets all the time. I just know that my cats would hate being in one of those things AT ALL. They mostly just laze about anyway (which they could do in that thing) and actually like hiding in stuff, but they don’t like being confined against their will.

Er....one slight problem. Tama is more a Station Mistress than Master. It's a calico cat and calicos are almost exclusively female because the genetic determination that causes this colour vatriation is linked to the X chromosome. Tama is a girl!
