Second of two parts of our adventure on the Nakasendo trail.
We follow the previous day of 7-hour travel (including stops) from Tokyo to Tsumago with Hiking/Trekking Day from Magome to Tsumago, an almost 8-KM hike. Can we make the average 2-3 hour time?
There have been concerns about bear encounters on this trek -- mind you, we live in the tropics with no bear issues. But the day is too beautiful for these fears, and despite a couple of instances of paranoia on the trail, we march on and get out alive and well and joyful!
Overall, it's a beautiful trail as we pass through the well-preserved and quaint Magome, patches of residential areas and small farms, and of course, the expectedly beautiful Japanese woods, perfect for forest bathing. There is also the Tateba Tea House, a structure that has been around since the Edo Period and has so far continued the tradition of serving tea to travelers on the Nakasendo. And of course, the reward is getting back to Tsumago, lovely and peaceful, the supper that's waiting for us is the perfect cap to this adventure.

im travelling solo in march/april, and this trekk will be included in my itinerary. kaso im still thinking about the 8km hike. would really want to see the tea house in spring 🥺 the tree in front mismo ng tea house is a cherry blossom tree, and ang ganda nya dun sa video na napanood ko. Very magical. do you think the trail is safe for solo female travellers?

I think it should be safe. We met a small group of women in their 70s trekking the Nakasendo at the same time we were there (coincidentally we were staying in the same inn) and also a solo middle age female hiker - all of them Japanese. I did a solo “climb” - more like steps up on a sacred mountain - in Japan before and it felt safe naman. If you’re concerned about wildlife, a bell bear may help and also bear spray? It’s a really nice trek and the tea house is just gorgeous! Feel free to ask , I hope I can answer them. 🙂
