The Northern Lights are visible from latitudes like Tokyo recently because we are near solar maximum and, more importantly, Earth's magnetic field is weakening (magnetic poles may flip in our lifetimes), so the aurora are visible much further South than normal. They are faint, so you must be in the country, under very dark skies. They may last only a few minutes. The further North you are, the better your chance of seeing them.
