A big change with the JR Pass is that previously you had to purchase it in your home country. This is no longer the case. You can now purchase in Japan at major rail stations.

I bought the JR pass back in 2019. It was an Ordinary, 7-day pass for 15 days in Japan. I stayed 5 days in Tokyo without using it, then used it for Hakone (wouldn't recommend using the JR for this), Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima, Himeji, and back to Osaka. Flew back from Kansai Airport so I didn't use it for going back to Tokyo, but it paid itself off at the time. Definitely useful for someone who doesn't have a lot of time, but you really need to plan ahead carefully in my opinion.

@@tiniesttraveler Hi! from what I can remember there are a number of ways to get to Hakone from Tokyo, when I went there I remember having the JRpass and buying the Hakone pass on top of that. It was a bit strange and quite far to get there from Odawara station (shinkansen), especially because when I was there there were some issues with the funicular so I couldn't use that at all. I reckon the Odakyu line from Shinjuku would be a better alternative. Safe travels! Hope you have a great time!

Thanks for this. Very helpful. I would suggest still purchasing a Suica card and load it with credit as you may want to explore Tokyo via some of the trains that don't accept the JR pass. In addition, the Suica can be used on vending machines and convenience stores. I remember taking a commuter train to get to Mitaka to get to the awesome Studio Ghibli. At the end of your trip, you can return the card and get a refund of the available credit

I used a JR pass only on my first trip. If you plan on staying in various places for a little while, it isn't worth it. It only works if you are on the move. Also, the choice of Shinkansen you can use is very limited. So, if you're covering a few cities in a few days, it's probably a good choice. Otherwise, just purchase Shinkansen tickets when you need them.
@alra1033
@alra1033 Жыл бұрын
Can you clarify what you mean by “on the move”? Because I am visiting three regions but staying in each for a few days.
@russellparratt9859
@russellparratt9859 Жыл бұрын
@@alra1033 The various JR Pass tickets cover different periods of time. I don't know what's available now, or what the pricing structure is. However, by "on the move", I meant spending only a few days in major cities, so that you could use the Shinkansen as much as possible, to make sure you get value for money. There is no point validating the ticket, then not using it because you are staying in the one place. Before going, you could go to the JR website, and figure out the total price of separate tickets. It's often just easier to buy the ones you need, rather than a JR pass that gives you value only if it is used a lot within a few days. Also, the JR pass lets you travel on the slower (more stops) and less frequent Hikari and Kodoma Shinkansen, but not the Nozomi, which is far more frequent, and non-stop between major cities. You have to buy tickets for it on the day, but it gives you far more flexibility for your travel plans. I am referring only to the line from Tokyo to Hiroshima. I don't know about the lines north of Tokyo.

I plan on staying in Tokyo for 7 days and then travel to Kyoto and Osaka for 7 days aswell.. Would u then recommend only buying the JR-pass for the week im going to kyoto? And secondly, what would u recommend using as travelling methods in the Tokyo-area instead of the JR-pass?
@russellparratt9859
@russellparratt9859 Жыл бұрын
@@RushTheTime Hi. I don't know where you are writing from, so I can only offer current Australian dollar prices as a guide. If you are spending 7 days in all three cities that you mentioned, then a JR pass will be a waste of money. 7 days - $329 / 14 days - $524 / 21days - $669. On the other hand, a single trip from Tokyo to Kyoto costs $214. The return trip from Osaka to Tokyo costs $222. You can get the standard JR train from Kyoto to Osaka. You can see that your timeline doesn't really work with the JR Pass, which has to be used within the time-frame to get value from it. Importantly, buying individual Shinkansen tickets allows you to use the Nozomi, which is very frequent, and the main Shinkansen in use between Tokyo and Osaka. The JR Pass allows only for travel on the Hikari or Kodama, which are far less frequent, and slower. Travelling within the Tokyo area, I find that buying a day ticket for the Tokyo Metro is the best option. It takes you to most places within the inner Tokyo area, with unlimited daily use, and it also provides access to their public toilet system, which can be very convenient if you are out and about for the day. There is another local service, the Toei Line, but it is far less extensive, although it depends on where you have to go. Then, there is the well-known JR Yamanote line, which does a big oval loop around the inner Tokyo area. I do a lot of walking, and found that the Tokyo Metro was sufficient for most daily travel. I would buy separate tickets for the Toei line or Yamanote line only if I needed to use them. I don't think that the three-in-one day ticket option is worth it. Kyoto has a good underground service too, and Osaka has an excellent underground service. Regarding Osaka, I would usually buy a day ticket for their service as well, and you get plenty of value for it, if you are exploring the city. Kyoto is smaller, and you might not find it necessary to get a day ticket. It all depends ...... Feel free to ask any more questions. Cheers.

@@russellparratt9859 Thank you so much for your response! And ty for elaborating on the prices! I'm from Denmark, so i just converted the prices to get a better understanding. About the timeline to Kyoto and Osaka, I meant that I wanted to go there and return in the 7 day timeframe, so the JR Pass would be worth it. I didn't know if the JR Pass would suffice when travelling around Kyoto and Osaka, so ty for elaborating on that as well! About Tokyo, I've been researching the Suica Card as well and i've gotten a few different recommendations; 1) the Suica card to getting around inner Tokyo, 2) the day ticket as you mentioned and 3) the regional pass. When staying in Tokyo, I also thought about going to for example Mount Fuji and not just inner Tokyo. Therefore I am not sure whether the daily passes or the Suica card are the best options for me. When you were in Tokyo, did you also go on ''daily trips'' of Tokyo and if so, was the day pass still the most sufficient option? I'm not going for the cheapest nor the most expensive form of transportation, but more the best option for the price.. I know there are cheaper options such as busses. I'm sorry for the long response and again I'm thankful for your detailed reply :D
