I have always considered going to a barber in Japan a special experience. Japanese barbers, like many professional craftsman in Japan, take extreme pride and pay incredible attention to detail in their work. An experience for me this time in Shinjuku, at a traditional Japanese barbershop called Rihatsu, reconfirmed that for me again this time! Almost everything in a Japanese haircut is done by hand with scissors with little reliance on clippers at all! There are hot towels given throughout and the customer enjoys a great head, neck and shoulder massage too! Your hair is washed and shampoo and straight blades are uses to shave your neck and face if you wish. This is all standard in Japan and it comes at a very very fair price too! In fact, a traditional cut like this in Japan is less than it is at many "factory" hair cut places around the USA and no tipping required either! Barbers in both Japan and the USA are disappearing as many get older and no one is around to succeed them. I hope this video acts as a bit of an appeal for young people (men and women too) to consider learning how to be a high end barber; a trade that will never go away as long as their are people and we have hair!! LOL btw- this is something you too can experience in Japan that isn't going to be recommended to you in many other places than Steves POV.
