Loves these videos man. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You. I've been for the last two years digging in hard to learn Japanese. At this point in time I am almost done with n2. Sadly I cannot afford to go or exchange in Japan, so until I get the resources these videos really help share the experience and provides some good recommendations on where to go when I DO have to resources. Keep making videos, -A random guy on the Internet

What fun! Dance is so universal. And those strange headgear were originally rain hats to protect the women's elaborate hairdos. The meaning may have been forgotten, but they will still do the job.

To anyone who wants to know about the symbol on the ladies kimonos that looks like a swastika/manji, its actually the family crest of the Hachisuka family, the feudal family situated in Tokushima who began the culture of Awaodori. So its not a religious symbol in this case.

Hi John! Nice video. I liked the festival, there was such a great atmosphere there. The dance was quite different from occidental dances and the dancers were full of stamina, even when it was late. I think a lot of us would loved to see you trying the dance. It's a shame the dance ended when you decide to tried it. I will for sure include Tokushima in my travel to Japan. Greetings from Southamerica!

Let this be a reminder for why preserving traditions is important. Seeing elements of such a rich culture fade away into the pages of history would be a tragedy. I have much respect for those who care about passing on the torch, so to speak. I'm no dancer by any means, but I'd dance and drink with these people!
@showgee5 жыл бұрын
Josh Kendrick, You can say that again! Yes, you need to be footloose and get drunk occasionally. Btw, I'm an old Japanese guy. I was there 45 years ago. The atmosphere of the festival seems not changed much since then which is a wonderful thing to observe.

A fool who dances is a fool who sees If you are the same fool, you must dance or you will lose. This is a famous phrase for Awa Odori dance.
@FireCracker32408 жыл бұрын
The block sandals that the lady dancers have to wear... wow. That must be brutal on the feet. They tip toe, so all the weight is on the front of their feet, held in place only by the thong string between their toes. Their feet (and toes) must be so sore after this! That is true dedication to the tradition!

The essence of "Awa Odori " is "Bon Odori". "O-Bon" is Japanese faith that in the summer the spirits of the dead come back to this world. Therefore, "Bon Odori" has the meaning of comforting the soul of the dead. Tokushima was an area supported by fishermen. Awa Odori means to comfort the spirits of fishermen who died in the sea. The reason why Awa Odori attracts people is that the aspect of dialogue with the dead is mysterious. And Japanese word "awa" means "bubble" in English. Probably, there is the concept that "human life is like a bubble, fun, please enjoy this world".

+Domelgaming it was (and still is) traditionally the sacred symbol for good luck in Hinduism and Buddhism and the likes. Before WW1 Europe and then LATER the Nazi party took the mirrored version of it to represent them.
