Japan’s first AI-drawn manga Cyberpunk: Peach John is sending shock waves through the comic book world after hitting shelves on March 9, 2023. The author, who goes by the pen name “Rootport”, created the Japanese comics using a viral AI tool Midjourney, which has skyrocketed to worldwide popularity after its 2022 launch. As they have become more widespread, text-to-image generators like Midjourney have sparked concerns over copyright infringement and the role of human artistry within the comic book world.

I can admit it, FOR NOW. But we actually had no idea how faster this AI growth can be. Since the first time AI introduced until now, it takes only several years to make these things, drawing, coding and article. We know for sure AI and tech industry really growing and it just about time before these AI smoothing their work and being more accurate. Better we prepared for the worst by studying and have unreplaceable skills (work that need human touch like Caregiver, Nurse, etc) before AI taking every job possible. So do you.

1:05 this is the exact attitude a lot of those AI picture generators have, they only think about "speed" and things like that, they don't think about actual craft of the real artists, because, as this person said at 0:25, majority of them either never tried drawing or they tried drawing and simply gave up because learning art and how to draw is difficult and will take you a life time to learn and master. I personally find it rewarding to read manga and see how the story and the art itself progresses overtime, how mangaka is becoming better and better at their craft, you genuinely feel pround for them and honored to be on this journey with them. AI can not replicate that, it can not replicate the imperfections, the human mistakes, the progress of the artstyle with time, AI is supposed to be "perfect" from the get go and it's boring. Even though I have a lot of reservasions about AI picture generator, I still think there is place for it in artistic community as the helping tool, doing the boring job, or adding effects, backgrounds, as was mentioned in the video. In the right hands, AI can be a great tool that can help a lot of creative people with their craft and works, but, sadly, we see the opposite of that, AI being abused by people who have no idea what art is, and actual real artists being pushed from their positions and shunned if they disagree. We are entering a very intresting era in entertaining industry, never have I thought that art could be automated and yet, here we are. The only hope I have is, like with the 3D movies, people will get tired from the "nou hau" and will start craving human art again.

You can have an AI play against a chess master, but where’s the fun in that? An AI can make 4 pictures, but watching Bob Ross paint? That’s a notch above anything AI. Even if AI becomes “better” than human artists, the masses will get bored, or not, I forgot how brain dead this world is becoming.

I'm totally with you. I recently looked back to Slam Dunk manga after watching its movie. I forgot that Inoue Takehiko didn't start off as the godtier manga artist that we know today. Even his art when Slam Dunk first started looks so... bizarre to look at now after years of knowing him for drawing Vagabond. I can say the same with Araki Hirohiko whose drawing and storytelling skills evolve with time. It's something truly human. And I think, no matter what, we will always love watching an artist works with their hands. 😢This kind of feels like the world depicted in the anime Carol & Tuesday, a world where all songs were written by AI. Carol and Tuesday became a phenomenon for writing their own songs, they did not win over the singer with AI-made song, but their songs touched people in the a way that had been long forgotten.

"...I still think there is place for it in artistic community as the helping tool, doing the boring job, or adding effects, backgrounds, as was mentioned in the video." The problem is that those effects, backgrounds, etc, were sampled and taken from another artist without their consent or knowledge. So if you use AI, use someone else's elements, you're liable to get sued if you publish or make money off these AI generated images at some point later down the line. Why do that when you can buy that same 2D, 3D, Vector and Video stock content with a Creative Commons license?

AI works with data, it combines it and makes something new out of it. We have three main colors from which all other colors come, so does the AI do the same and takes only a few data and create infinite combinations, each more unique than the other. Human creativity works the same way, your data is your memory of what you have seen, heard, touched, smelled and tasted. From all this we create new combinations, just like the AI does, and just like the AI, we cannot come up with ideas that we have never seen before, we can only work with our data (memory). If you were to ask a human being to create a color that doesn't exist (yet), he couldn't because that's beyond his capacity, nobody can create something they've never seen before. But if you asked the AI, and we're talking about a much more advanced one, with a higher data input, it could combine as many colors as it needs for as long as it takes until it maybe finds a color we've never seen before. So no, AI will not need human creativity for long to sustain its work.

Given that other AI comic I've seen (the one famous for being denied copyright), I'm sure this one is just as stilted, visually confusing, and trying to make up for the AIs shortcomings in every panel as well. The AIs can be great assistance, and could probably vastly reduce the price if you hired an artist to draw the main features of each panel, but really should be used as the lead artist, or only artist, on these projects. Will AI eventually be drawing our illustrations and comics entirely? Maybe - but I think the day that happens will be a sad one indeed. AI doesn't truly create anything new, it just rehashes and combines the old; we'll be stagnant artistically at that point. If we're willing to replace the artists, why not musicians, writers, directors, actors, anybody? Why should a human hand be needed to craft what we consume at all? It's bleakly dystopian.

And if you're imagining some scenario where humans no longer have to work or do anything with their lives; whilst you might see that as a dream, I see it as a nightmare, and the best way to start a very fast decline for humanity. Why study and learn anything, when the AI can answer any question and solve any problem? Why bother with any creative pursuit when the AI can do it better, and so much more quickly? Somebody using AIb isn't making art, though, they're essentially commissioning it (aka telling somebody or something else to do it for them). That way of hiring s.b. else, however, was always open to everybody.

@@realnova7429 no. it's like ordering a pizza. you give them a list of toppings and they deliver. the end. at best you could say it's a Photoshop filter, just a thousand times more advanced. still. if you input a photo and run a Photoshop filter, you haven't "created" anything, either. you've pushed a button.

@@simonspethmann8086 but it allows faster crafting of other art forms. You're focusing too much on the illustration part but ignoring the rest of the picture. Like, for example, this will allow more accessibility for aspiring game developers that want a unique touch in their projects. Or art that involves many elements, where the AI generates the components and the artist merges all at will.

@@PirateWolf09 Oh, as long as it's sourced ethically I'm all for it. Would be great for comic book creators, too, if you can train it on your own art style (plus maybe the classics for composition). Or for the creation of reference... Actually, I don't bake my own pizza, either, and am totally fine with that. 😜 It's just that calling in a pizza doesn't make me pizza chef, same as entering a prompt won't make anybody an artist.

gantz is a manga that popularized editing and Photoshop techniques, many people were skeptical of it, but when the manga started, the manga exploded, so it's just a matter of time for manga with Ai to become so popular, what distinguishes Gantz from Ai, in Gantz, human power is still very much needed at Ai. scary

i could imagine in a few years from now where a studio work is to draw with their own art style to provide models for AI to create animation/comic faster, a lot of adaptation from manga to anime could be make a lot faster, we're gonna have a lot of anime to watch, and probably the animator would not overwork to death again.

Invention of cameras didn't end realism arts. In the end it's all about choosing the right medium to tell the right story. That's why many manga/anime adaptation with high budget CGI didn't find success. So, I think talented artists will not be replaced by technology.

It DID however push artists to be more original and creative instead of just copying reality. That sounds like a win all around to me.

Even if AI is able to deliver the most amazing work ever, it still boils down to the fact that it comes from the same software. It's like the same art director is doing all the work for everyone which quickly becomes incredibly dry
