Japan's Last “Ama” - The Female Fishers Who Free-Dive For Seafood (HBO)

The legendary “ama,” the sea-women of Japan, make their money dive-fishing along the coasts - without the help of a breathing apparatus. They are part of a tradition that stretches back thousands of years to Japan’s hunter-gather origins.
With few options to make a living back then, women learned to dive for abalone, sea cucumber, and other delicacies to sell at markets. The ama plunge as deep as 60 feet in freezing water, with no oxygen tanks, using techniques passed from generation to generation.
Women have traditionally been considered a better fit for the work than men due to the distribution of their body fat, with older ama better able to hold their breath for long periods of time.
Today, of course, women in Japan have other job opportunities and have increasingly entered the white-collar workplace. As a result, ama divers’ ranks have dwindled, from 20,000 after World War II to just 2,000 today.
VICE News traveled to Japan to look at this disappearing vocation, one of the last sustainable practices left in the age of commercial fishing.
This segment originally aired April 6, 2017, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

I was honored to have met an Ama yesterday. She did this job for 50 years until she was 75, she is now 81 years of age. Still looks very youthful for her age. She was also from Mie-ken, but moved to Shizuoka and dived there.

"healthy job" That's debatable. Yes it keeps you physically fit. But it also puts you at risk of clinical conditions like sinus infections, ear infections, and hypothermia due to long exposure to freezing cold waters.

One theory is that women have more fat and stay warmer in the water.. another theory, and the most plausible, is that men are little babies and women have a stronger pain tolerance. ;) lol jk.... kinda!
@Whyalwaysm3

i am gonna answer this after 2 years. In communities w/ Ama, men usually work as deep sea fishermen and would be gone for months as a way to earn extra to also help with the expenses women in these communities became Ama.

I just came from another Vice video with a spelling error in title. Either the guy uploading the video is stupid, or they do it on purpose to get people like us to respond, which does increase views for them because KZbin's new comment algorithm. Something tells me it's the new thing to do nowadays.

The Haenyeo on Jeju Island, no surprise that the Ama are mostly in Okinawa. Jeju and Okinawa are close to each other probably interactions due to geographic closeness and nice tropical climate help facilitate this interesting tradition in both matriarchal societies. Haenyeo and Ama are amazing people to talk to and partake in their fresh catches from the sea, sadly both traditions are declining like you mentioned.
