“Japanese jazz found itself to be in a bit of rut in the 1970’s” Japanese jazz had a renaissance of free jazz in the underground, with Sato Masahiko, Masahiko Togashi, Masayuki Takayanagi, Kaoru Abe etc. It was an incredibly forward thinking and progressive movement for jazz as it pushed into a truly Japanese unique style.

His self taught story gives me encouragement to keep practicing all the time.

This is one of the greatest jazz albums of all time - its focus and intensity is unmatched across the industry. He says a thousand words via his music without saying a single one. That feeling of an early summer is perfectly portrayed on his interpretation of Hideo Ichikawa's Early summer and this piece from side A of the album has quickly become my favourite jazz piece of all time. I hope Ryo rests well knowing his music has left an unforgettable mark on humanity as a whole - I dearly wish to visit the Showboat in Sapporo one day and pay his window a visit and let her know how much Ryo's work meant to me. Thank you for this video - any credit given to this album is decades overdue and I wish it would get more attention than it already has.

Well said Pad. I, like many others, discovered this album on the sidebar and once I gave it a listen it stuck with me. Ryo showed the piano's versatility and the opening track was like a new friend taking me on an exciting adventure. The fact he learned piano in six years is inspiring. I need this kind of mentality in my own work. I also want to say thank you for re-introducing me to Stevem (I recall his Plastic Love video which was very educational) and for reminding me to listen to his other albums. As for what else you should cover, you could cover the pioneering band Yellow Magic Orchestra (maybe even covering their parody band Oriental Magnetic Yellow) or diving into more jazz fusion with Weather Report or some of the more obscure Japanese jazz fusion bands.

I would say that Scenery is the painting album, all 6 songs off of Scenery are different yet complement each other in such a way that it sounds like the creation of painting so beautiful that you have to question if it's even real. The album captures the piano and it's history with jazz in a way I've never heard an artist from any other genre do before and I think that's why I love it so much.

Great video, man! Nothing but respect for a guy who taught himself piano and worked until he got good. I am just a dude on the internet sharing his opinion, releasing an album is a very noble thing to do and if a single guy feels inspired to take up the instrument because of this recording then that's great. Now, with all things said, I think it's not very good, his vocabulary seems kind of limited to me, and when he's not playing very familiar licks over well established standards he goes for a modal sound (early summer) and starts blasting pentatonic runs that get tiresome after a while. I think his popularity comes from some algorithm magic and the fact that it's not very aggressive on the listener's ears.
