"He's 32 but his room looks like it belong to a teenager" That's an ignorant comment, and probably the kind of comment that make people like him feel like they have to hide from the world. The belief that somehow being interested in things like manga, anime, video games etc. are things that adults shouldn't find entertaining is ridiculous. I have a huge line of interests ranging from American football, motorcycles, HEMA, reading 90's manga and watching 90's anime, video games, shopping, building PC's, shooting firearms, collecting candles, working on my vehicle... and that's just the tip of the iceberg, and I do all those things while maintaining a loving relationship with my family and providing a decent home for them. You shouldn't have to fit into societal norms in order to be accepted, but that's the world. At the least, you guys shouldn't contribute to the problem.

I'm American, but I've been a hikikomori. When I was 21 I became bipolar and everywhere I went people would antagonize me for looking scared due to my anxiety and panick attacks. I retreated to my room where I would just play videogames and watch tv for years. I would try to work and then be abused by people so I would retreat for another 6 months on and off in this time. Not until I found a good medication and found an okay job did I stop being a recluse. I am still a loner with few social connections, but I am in school and hope to meet people after Covid.

When I was able to get my license back and go back to work, I was terrified of leaving the house and was more depressed than I thought was possible before then. it took months and constant proding/encouragement from my parents before I could leave the house and go to work and feel comfortable doing so. Bullying someone physically *might* prompt them to get strong and know how to defend themselves also bullying someone socially *might* prompt them to learn various social dynamics, human behaviour and psychology but at the end of the day when you're clueless and don't know why this is happening you start thinking that you are wrong, your being is wrong, your existence is wrong and you don't belong in this world. But in addition Japan is a highly competitive work oriented society. I don't know if the male : female ratios for this condition are equal but both may struggle to meet their expected role, and Japan tends to be less amenable to subjective expression and emotional sharing. The presence of social media, KZbin, video gaming may also be unhelpful. But it's possible the west is going the same way as men - women become more polarised leading to MGTOW, # metoo and greater globalization serving to erode individual difference and impose one standard of being upon everybody. Governments also fail their people by not promoting community and social cohesion and not providing the organisations and ethos allowing greater social contact and connection. Connection and contact tends to increase as economic conditions improve as people strive for independence and may move away from their original communities to more alienating city environments.

If an individual wants to be alone, I think he should be left alone. If I decide to move out to the country-side, live by myself, see no visitors, take no calls, and not be bothered by anyone, if I have the financial resources to do that, then there is no reason why I should forfeit that right. Society doesn't have the right to impose its social values on the individual. The individual is free to do whatever he wants, provided he isn't infringing on another individual's rights.
@markehm9416 жыл бұрын
It's not that they want to be alone, it's that they don't fit in and not fitting in is a real problem. We have a saying here, the tall nail gets hammered down, it's real and not fitting in when you feel individual, and not being allowed to be an individual must be horrific.

What a brilliant example of how freedom without opportunity isn't freedom at all: According to you, every individual is free to do so, but only if they have the financial resources for it. After all the arm chair philosophy is said and done, freedom is determined not just by the absence of restriction, but also the availability of resources. If just one of these is missing on a given matter, freedom pertaining to it equals zero.

I've been a NEET/Hikki for around 13 years (I'm 28). This isn't strictly a Japanese phenomena, it's starting to catch on in the west. The beauty of the internet is once you learn English you get access to so many people, so it's easier for you to find a community/interest you feel at home, on top of (as the video mentioned) the internet providing everything you need on demand. The big difference between Japan and Europe is that the state typically funds NEETs/Hikkis as a big chunk of them suffer from some form of health issue(s), either psychological or physical. The misconception that we're lazy is very harmful as most of us are seriously incapable of initiating our own rehabilitation and feel ashamed of being a NEET/Hikki. Some of us have missed critical aspects of socialization that make us seem awkward or incapable of communicating. There are also people who went through abuse and are just scared/anxious of people. Most of us aren't lazy, we're just broken.

13th? Jesus. Well, I'm not too far behind. I'm on my 7th year, and I can't believe I made it this far without losing my mind---even though I feel like it sometimes. Like the guy in the clip, I get free food, but I want to be the leader of the family---but its incredibly tough just trying to overcome daily anxiety---let alone build a career. I feel like the Japanese are still lucky, given your explanation. Living isolated in California is a different story. I'm always on the internet, so that helped me all these years--researching, updating, etc, leaving comments, etc... but in my now 7th year, distracting myself on the internet hasn't helped... there's just this growing anxiety. The only way I am healing myself is actually reading comments like yours, and knowing that there are others facing similar struggles. From 1:50 - 3:15 This is NOT, I repeat, this is NOT an act of rebellion. This implies that the man chooses to be inside, on his own accord. THIS IS NOT TRUE. He WANTS to be outside, but the bullying and mistreatment from others has caused him to retreat and remain inside. He fears being hurt again and this is a subconscious, psychological response. This is a combination of Social Phobia with Agoraphobia which has stemmed from severe depression through life events. This man has been hurting for a long time. These are not your typical "hermits" that wish to rebel against society and take advantage of the system. For the most part, this is an American stereotype. These people ALREADY feel guilty for living this way. These people are hurting and it's not easy to overcome and just instantly be cured of. I know because I have Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and the same thing happened to me. I was in a Computer Science cohort and had my entire senior project group turn their back on me. I did the majority of the work (I even had a log of all my work), yet my group tried to undermine me by undervaluing the work that I put in. Fortunately, the teacher stood up for me and I was able to push through to the final presentation (through a Skype video call, for my segment, with the university's consent) and get my Bachelor's Degree, even after they attempted to kick me out of the group. To this day, I still don't know how I managed to do it against the amount of pressure there was. Since then, I have been emotionally distraught. I cannot face the workforce at the physical level yet - perhaps one day, I will put my new degree to work. This happens in America too, just not nearly as much (but it is increasing). Some people will be mean or rude and just say that the guy in this video needs to grow up or harden up, but it's not that easy. You have to fight against your own body's anxiety, panic, palpitations, sweats, shaking, etc. It is tough, even for people that go to psychiatrist and counseling - and can you imagine the people that don't seek professional help? That's likely what happened to the older man that died alone in his apartment in this video.

I wish my teachers had stood up for me. I stopped coming in to school bc of my extreme social anxiety and none of the teachers or other students even noticed, making it way too easy for me to retreat and become a hermit.

Maybe they aren't lonely just because they live alone. Being around people doesn't guarantee the lack of loneliness.

Maybe they're lonely because our social situation is spiraling out of control. What I mean: like minds tend to get along, while unlike minds tend to challenge one-another. There needs to be a balance, as too many like minds lead to complacency, and too many unlike minds leads to misanthropy. Maybe our societies are becoming too complex to create enough like minds to go around.

Yes I relate to this personally you can be around people all the time and still feel loneliness its because others dont understand you or they aren't into the things you're into

Its not just a Japanese phenomenon. Japan is the first country to recognize this situation and name it. America just groups these people into words of lazy or depression.
@Superior1995Rex3 жыл бұрын
Those people are depressed. Japan is not recognizing/acknoledging it, but instead false-label it by calling them hikikomori instead of depressed.
@GaryHighFruit3 жыл бұрын
@@Superior1995Rex But they're depressed because of society. You're putting the blame on those individuals, just like Japan is doing. Are you aware of the phenomenon of Japanese men committing suicide? It's JAPAN.

I'm not a hikkikormori, but I am an alcoholic. For years I'd come home from work and drink myself into oblivion. Man, don't be like me and do what I did. Please be stronger. I remember when I told my grandfather( the only one who tried to understand me ) why I was the way I was. And he told me something I'll never forget." I know it's hard kiddo, but don't let the world break you down.Because you're worth it. " Please man, don't let this world break you down, because your'e worth it.

It's another way to self medicate, to withdraw from the painful stimulus and make a soft cocoon around you. But that cocoon becomes a strangling net for them and draws the joy out of their lives.

I'm highly isolated because of drugs. I go out everyday but only for dog walks. I work from home, I order from Amazon or tesco online. I'm slightly afraid of relapse. Isolation has occurred thrice now. The first was thanks to my parents. That time i only left to see the Dr once every fortnight. That was a long 14 months. The second was far worse but shorter, I had no need to go out so didn't for 9 months. Now it's been so long. Once I was walking my dog and relapsed. A dealer offered me samples, never got those offers when using. Sometimes I feel like doing nothing, sleeping, eating & even washing. Disgusting as it is I didn't shower for 3 weeks, I used to shower twice a day. Even my social interactions are weird. For example I got so used to farting super loud. So when collecting my meds I did a huge one. So many people were trying to hold back laughter, I didn't even flinch. Took 20 seconds to realise what I'd done.

The cleaning crews that clean up in situations like the 67 year old man dying alone in his apartment, isn't exploitative. That's their business. The show's host has obviously no clue that HAZMAT and crime scene clean up crews exist in the world.
