Let's not fool ourselves thinking this is only a Japanese phenomenon. Sure Japanese culture may make the problem more pronounced, but there are plenty of people all over the world who do not fit into society. Society can be harsh, especially if you cannot conform to what is considered normal.

Society use to lock away the ones who dont fit. Silently euthanize them if they become a burden. Now, we are just left to suffer in loneliness.

"He's 32 but his room looks like it belong to a teenager" That's an ignorant comment, and probably the kind of comment that make people like him feel like they have to hide from the world. The belief that somehow being interested in things like manga, anime, video games etc. are things that adults shouldn't find entertaining is ridiculous. I have a huge line of interests ranging from American football, motorcycles, HEMA, reading 90's manga and watching 90's anime, video games, shopping, building PC's, shooting firearms, collecting candles, working on my vehicle... and that's just the tip of the iceberg, and I do all those things while maintaining a loving relationship with my family and providing a decent home for them. You shouldn't have to fit into societal norms in order to be accepted, but that's the world. At the least, you guys shouldn't contribute to the problem.

agreed. I am in my 20's and my room screams video game nerd. I don't think that'll ever change, even when I get married. In fact, if I find myself needing to "conform" to my future partner by getting rid of what the world defines "childish", then that would mean compromising myself, my happiness, and eventually my mental health. I don't think anyone could spend a lifetime trying to be what they aren't, just to please people, and not be affected by it in the long run.

Depression is hard to understand if you’ve never experienced it. It’s not laziness, whenever I’m not in a depressive state I try to stay in the gym as much as I can. And it’s not being spoiled either since many people who suffer from depression commit suicide. You become numb, nihilistic, mentally and physically tired. If you’ve suffered from Depression you know this all too well. My heart goes out To everyone suffering from mental illness and I hope we all find a way to ease the pain and suffering.

Thanks for sharing, Robin! :-) Maybe you can use this way of seeing things: I try to practise, what I call "insisting goodness", which is to treat others, as I want to be treated myself and avoid the opposite - even when I feel a need to correct someone. Not so easy to do, but as we all know: Practise makes perfect eventually, my potential friend! ;-) Even though people may not react positive to this, because it may remind them of, what they are doing wrong towards others, then you still have tried to increase the amount of fairness and positivity in this world by doing so. And at least you have opened up the posibility of teaching both yourself and others more about, what true fairness and neighborly love is really all about! ;-) May you and your loved ones have a beautiful day and a fruitful future! :-)

This was me for years. Through a series of traumatic events in my life, I became clinically depressed and withdrew completely from public life. I quit my job, cut off all contact with friends, and sunk into a deep depression that lasted for years. Honestly i was just a husk, barely present in my own body. It was prison and i wanted to end it many times. Somehow i managed to claw my way back to some semblance of a normal life with the help of my long suffering dad. I owe so much to him because he basically pulled me through. Mental health is a life or death matter. Just know not to give up even if it seems so dark and hopeless.

About 4 months into that I also lost my license for a year. I spent nearly 18 months in my room, literally only leaving it to get food from the kitchen or use the bathroom. When I was able to get my license back and go back to work, I was terrified of leaving the house and was more depressed than I thought was possible before then. it took months and constant proding/encouragement from my parents before I could leave the house and go to work and feel comfortable doing so. I feel guilty because I would have never had sympathy for people going through something like this until I went through it myself. @@JAZPETES010 bruh I've been bullied socially and trust me it hits different. People say a lot of hurtful things that don't necessarily give you the motive to throw hands because once you do throw hands then you're ostracised for being violent and antisocial ("come on bruh we're just having some fun, it's a joke don't take it too seriously"). Being socially outcast is the worst bully. Bullying someone physically *might* prompt them to get strong and know how to defend themselves also bullying someone socially *might* prompt them to learn various social dynamics, human behaviour and psychology but at the end of the day when you're clueless and don't know why this is happening you start thinking that you are wrong, your being is wrong, your existence is wrong and you don't belong in this world. Young people need guidance and unfortunately, most adults don't answer them honestly when they ask them questions.

The older generation of the Japanese (and pretty much most civilizations) has people who forced themselves out of whatever issues they had to be productive to society. When you lived the lives they did, overcoming their issues, you can probably understand why they can't understand why these younger people don't make a real effort to at least not be a drain to their immediate relatives. Mental health is a serious issue, mind, but it would take the older generation passing on and the newer generation recognizing the issue for what it is to have a paradigm shift when it comes to dealing with mental issues.

But in addition Japan is a highly competitive work oriented society. I don't know if the male : female ratios for this condition are equal but both may struggle to meet their expected role, and Japan tends to be less amenable to subjective expression and emotional sharing. The presence of social media, KZbin, video gaming may also be unhelpful. But it's possible the west is going the same way as men - women become more polarised leading to MGTOW, # metoo and greater globalization serving to erode individual difference and impose one standard of being upon everybody. Governments also fail their people by not promoting community and social cohesion and not providing the organisations and ethos allowing greater social contact and connection. Connection and contact tends to increase as economic conditions improve as people strive for independence and may move away from their original communities to more alienating city environments.

They almost all have family support, which is help. And they could start by accessing mental heath care, which is high quality and available for free in Japan. However, depression makes them not want to start, because it's painful and scary. They feel safer in their rooms. I just go to work, but have no plans to seek promotions to make more money to take care of only one person with no family. I just watch TV and eat microwave dinners. I was very sad for most of my life until recently the sadness sort of gave up and left too. Loneliness is not so bad when going into a 30th year of it. You don't really notice it anymore and it becomes familiar and comfortable. I know 2 others that hanged themselves. I understand why they did but wish they hadn't. Simple people with simple dreams that have no clear path to realizing them often withdraw and just walk away from society, or worse. The phenomenon isn't new, but the percentage of people engaging in it has never been so large before.

She has a daughter who is 28 with emotional problems who rarely leaves her room or the house. Most days, I don't either, but we don't really talk to each other very much. Lately, we text now and then when one of us ventures out into the world. We tell the other where we are going and when we plan to return. Then when my wife returns home, her daughter will occasionally come to our room and then I will talk directly to her. I care very much for my wife's daughter. I love her like she were my own. I try to tell her comforting and supportive things without judging. Personally, I love people and want to be with others. But my daughter doesn't really want to spend much time with me, but I think she likes knowing that I am here for her, with her in the house. I wish so much I could help her before she stops caring.

Turn off the cartoons, unplug from the TV and media and create your own happiness in life instead of expecting to consume it like some Saturday cartoon before your time whittles away to nothingness and you question what you've with your life before fading to oblivion. What a brilliant example of how freedom without opportunity isn't freedom at all: According to you, every individual is free to do so, but only if they have the financial resources for it. After all the arm chair philosophy is said and done, freedom is determined not just by the absence of restriction, but also the availability of resources. If just one of these is missing on a given matter, freedom pertaining to it equals zero.

I've been a NEET/Hikki for around 13 years (I'm 28). This isn't strictly a Japanese phenomena, it's starting to catch on in the west. The beauty of the internet is once you learn English you get access to so many people, so it's easier for you to find a community/interest you feel at home, on top of (as the video mentioned) the internet providing everything you need on demand. The big difference between Japan and Europe is that the state typically funds NEETs/Hikkis as a big chunk of them suffer from some form of health issue(s), either psychological or physical. The misconception that we're lazy is very harmful as most of us are seriously incapable of initiating our own rehabilitation and feel ashamed of being a NEET/Hikki. Some of us have missed critical aspects of socialization that make us seem awkward or incapable of communicating. There are also people who went through abuse and are just scared/anxious of people. Most of us aren't lazy, we're just broken.

13th? Jesus. Well, I'm not too far behind. I'm on my 7th year, and I can't believe I made it this far without losing my mind---even though I feel like it sometimes. Worry, anxiety, and a bit embarrassment--I felt it all. Especially the fact I can't look after my parents yet. Like the guy in the clip, I get free food, but I want to be the leader of the family---but its incredibly tough just trying to overcome daily anxiety---let alone build a career. I feel like the Japanese are still lucky, given your explanation. Living isolated in California is a different story. I'm always on the internet, so that helped me all these years--researching, updating, etc, leaving comments, etc... but in my now 7th year, distracting myself on the internet hasn't helped... there's just this growing anxiety. The only way I am healing myself is actually reading comments like yours, and knowing that there are others facing similar struggles. This, and building myself up as an artist is what I think will push me forward.

From 1:50 - 3:15 This is NOT, I repeat, this is NOT an act of rebellion. This implies that the man chooses to be inside, on his own accord. THIS IS NOT TRUE. He WANTS to be outside, but the bullying and mistreatment from others has caused him to retreat and remain inside. He fears being hurt again and this is a subconscious, psychological response. This is a combination of Social Phobia with Agoraphobia which has stemmed from severe depression through life events. This man has been hurting for a long time. These are not your typical "hermits" that wish to rebel against society and take advantage of the system. For the most part, this is an American stereotype. These people ALREADY feel guilty for living this way. These people are hurting and it's not easy to overcome and just instantly be cured of. I know because I have Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and the same thing happened to me. I was in a Computer Science cohort and had my entire senior project group turn their back on me. I did the majority of the work (I even had a log of all my work), yet my group tried to undermine me by undervaluing the work that I put in. Fortunately, the teacher stood up for me and I was able to push through to the final presentation (through a Skype video call, for my segment, with the university's consent) and get my Bachelor's Degree, even after they attempted to kick me out of the group. To this day, I still don't know how I managed to do it against the amount of pressure there was. Since then, I have been emotionally distraught. I cannot face the workforce at the physical level yet - perhaps one day, I will put my new degree to work. This happens in America too, just not nearly as much (but it is increasing). Some people will be mean or rude and just say that the guy in this video needs to grow up or harden up, but it's not that easy. You have to fight against your own body's anxiety, panic, palpitations, sweats, shaking, etc. It is tough, even for people that go to psychiatrist and counseling - and can you imagine the people that don't seek professional help? That's likely what happened to the older man that died alone in his apartment in this video.

Maybe they're lonely because our social situation is spiraling out of control. What I mean: like minds tend to get along, while unlike minds tend to challenge one-another. There needs to be a balance, as too many like minds lead to complacency, and too many unlike minds leads to misanthropy. Maybe our societies are becoming too complex to create enough like minds to go around.

I'm highly isolated because of drugs. I go out everyday but only for dog walks. I work from home, I order from Amazon or tesco online. I'm slightly afraid of relapse. Isolation has occurred thrice now. The first was thanks to my parents. That time i only left to see the Dr once every fortnight. That was a long 14 months. The second was far worse but shorter, I had no need to go out so didn't for 9 months. Now it's been so long. Once I was walking my dog and relapsed. A dealer offered me samples, never got those offers when using. Sometimes I feel like doing nothing, sleeping, eating & even washing. Disgusting as it is I didn't shower for 3 weeks, I used to shower twice a day. Even my social interactions are weird. For example I got so used to farting super loud. So when collecting my meds I did a huge one. So many people were trying to hold back laughter, I didn't even flinch. Took 20 seconds to realise what I'd done.
