Probably the most cringe scene, showcasing the underlying rot of an otherwise fairly mediocre but also personally very fun show, since it was written by the author to expose his political views. It's preachy and it shows how he thinks of the military, having been in the JSDF, and the civilians outside of it. The civilians are portrayed as bumbling idiots at best, deceived by the cunning corrupt politicians and the media. All in need of the strong leadership and protection of the army, itself always shown as composed by compassionate, brave and pure, yet highly trained and deadly warriors. Couldn't be more Mary Sue if he had tried. The show was fun and the combat scenes were often really grounded, a breath of fresh air. But, it came about due to the author's military background and, as most war media made by or with career military personel, one can really see how shallow and insulated their worldviews are. It's a caste mentality, not unique to Japan's military. It's as if the civilians are beneath them both physically and mentally, incapable of protecting themselves, incapable of understanding warfare and, clearly worst of all, acting as self serving obstacles to the beacons of honesty that are the military personel and their leaders. It's pure fascism, the idea that the masses need a strong military leadership not bound by degenerate civilian morality. It's very ironic, considering how the protagonist is precisely focused on achieving a quiet hedonistic life style. The show itself borrows heavily from harem and ecchi anime tropes. When outside of these moments of scripted greatness of the JSDF, the characters are not any different from most run of the mill shows. Hell, if one doesn't look up the author and his esposed views, the underlying fascist ideology can be easily missed, much as it goes on the average superhero movie and series.

One thing I love about the GATE Manga, is the fact that it actually evolves into a sort of political drama, with the Japanese government attempting to stabilise the region, by propping up the legitimate government against the Princes insurgents while pressure from home demands the troops return at the same time forces abroad call for access to the GATE to be shared with other nations. This kind of setting isn't really explored as much in fiction, much less anime/manga, which is why it's such a standout for me. I can draw a lot of parallels with the story of Gate to the tales of places like Afghanistan and Iraq, where the conventional fighting is largely one sided and over swiftly, but the problem of insurgency and political turmoil in the aftermath causes most of the heartache.
@Anverse-14 Жыл бұрын
Question : Why is the Japanese government the one that sets up the legitimate government? Why does Japan keep on getting involved to this point alone? Isn't the UN supposed to be the one in control by this point? The Special Region holds no connection to Japan besides being a gateway. Japan has no right to keep holding the region alone without any global agreement. The same has been done with Antarctica and space, so for a world complete with their own civilization and geography outside of any ties with Earth, it should be either left alone or shared by everyone.

That's how the manga works as well. The manga is just a little further into the story. It is a silly isekai story. They are trying to explore why the two worlds are connected, why the Special Region is technologically regressed and even magic has unspoken limits, meeting some drow which expands the harem etc. It has some weird subplots like smuggling yaoi into the Special Region. One of the more interesting aspects is how the inhabitants of the other side try to puzzle out the invaders. The base is a place where you can observe and interact with JSDF off-duty staff so of course it's crawling with spies after a while. They start to figure out that Japan is actually not the only power on the Earth side, that this "Kingdom of China" might make a better offer. The town stays in the background in the manga. There are some light comedy subplots that explore how the early refugees from the first chapters settle into their new position as an increasingly prosperous garrison town and trade hub. It starts to function like any other garrison town, this is where off-duty JSDF staff go to have a local meal or a drink. It is also a military protectorate administrated by the JSDF, with JSDF personnel and deputized locals keeping order. Deputized locals wear a strange mix of JSDF clothes, civilian garb and MP insignia, aren't allowed to use guns but carry their local weapons or imported Earth bows/swords. One of the deputies is a POW from much earlier. The trade is controlled by the JSDF, since they are the only ones who can bring things through the Ginza gate. The people in town are middle men who run the trade networks out into the Special Region. The JSDF uses it to raise local currency and develop human intelligence networks along the trade routes. They're used by the JSDF special forces when they want to set up an OP somewhere in a city. Since it is an isekai, everyone is gushing about how cool japanese culture is and how awesome sushi tastes. They trade fabrics, pop culture magazines, manga. They intentionally limit some items, like newspapers or technical manuals. There is a late suplot where we learn just how many spies from enemies and prospective allies are present in that town. People in the Special Region don't even know that other Earth nations even exist at first, they start to puzzle things together much later on when an international observer mission visits the base.

Looking forward to seeing a breakdown of Aslan's Mercenary airbase from Area 88 The Manga has an interesting mix of aircraft, namely early Phantoms (Cs, Ds, Bs, and Js), F-5A Freedom Fighters, F-5E Tiger IIs, A-4 Skyhawks, (a mix of Es, Fs, and Ms), eventually long-nose Phantoms (E models), eventually 2x F/A-18A Hornets (or possibly F/A-18Cs, you never know), a Draken, Tomcat, Super Sabers, Crusaders, and lots of other stuff. Edit: Later on in the Manga, they get ahold of some fairly goofy stuff: F-111 Aardvarks, an A-6 Intruder, an S-3 Viking, an RA-5C Vigilante, and eventually a B-1B Lancer. I think my personal favorites are the Draken, Tigershark, and X-29 X-29 because it's frankly one of the most beautiful non-combat planes ever built, F-20 Tigershark because it's one of my all-time favorites, and the Draken because of both the livery (desert camo) and the backstory (Basically, McCoy had to fuse two J-35J airframes together, was forced to go to Sweden for the non-afterburning part of the engine, then had to go to either Austria or Finland to get the afterburner, though I'm pretty sure both Draken airframes were either Finnish or Austrian). Another really goofy part of the Manga is when they modify a Kfir C.2 with a very powerful radar (which probably couldn't even fit in the nose), as well as 6x AIM-54 Phoenixes. Oh yeah, the main character also comes across an $80 Billion fortune, and buys an aircraft carrier. The Manga was a real trip and a half...

Gate shows how a coordinated military is deadly and how the tech difference is huge, just like how practicality makes things so much easier. But also shows how magic is straight bs and how dangerous some of the fantasy monsters are, a dragon is no joke even for the military, they had no way to deal damage to it other than heavy artillery and explosives, sure a dragon blows up instantly agaisnt a small army in the modern times but that doesnt make it any less dangerous, an army of dragons would absolutely fuk up a whole city just like an organized operation would absolutely obliterated a nest of dragons before they can even react, gate shows this pretty well too

I wouldn't call it Fantasy vs a modern military, That implies that there's actually some sort of conflict or relatively level Plainfield fight. Sadly the author lacks imagination when it comes to fantasy, So it's mainly Japanese military easily mowing down medieval peasants and the occasional monster. Hard to imagine why anyone would enjoy it but to each his own I guess.

@@bryanmcclure2220 In the manga, the empire gets their own development. They're even more fun to follow. They try to gather what information they got and make something with it. They have this roman quality about them. You can smash one army of Rome and they just make another. They start to show up wearing primative camouflage. They abandon massed ranks and start to use skirmish formations where everyone has a crossbow or sling. One JSDF ranger section against 200 guys with crossbows is a lot sketchier than just shooting line infantry. At one point they think "What if we take the biggest semi-trained, half-controlled monster we can find and put it in superheavy armour?" They build a listening post network once they learn the JSDF has transport planes. Magic or dragon flight isn't new to them but the concept of dropping an entire unit that way is. They use small dragons as recce and skirmishers at most. The JSDF has a huge communications advantage, a squad with a radio can communicate over vast distances. Some of them try to figure out how a gun works. They have no captured guns but they find non-magical lead pieces in dead and wounded soldiers, and can't see that none of the JSDF dudes are wizards. So they have a working hypothesis that some force in the guns must propel the lead forward. Much later on, some wizards are starting to learn how to make a spell working like a shaped charge based on smuggled physics books from Japan or something. They can't fireball a tank, it just dissipates the explosion. They hope this will bring back a new era of battle magic.

Much later on, some people in the Special Region start to pick up enough chatter that suggests Japan is actually not a major power on Earth. There's the "Kingdom of China" that might be an alternative ally. Back on the Earth side of the Gate, the world is locked in a cold war between China, the USA and Russia with Japan as a nominal US ally.

While the technological advantage can't be denied, in a few instances it was the modern tactics and training that also made a huge difference. I actually like how this anime does not treat the modern military as stupid just because they’re technologically superior. Even though they clearly have modern technology on their side, the JSDF remains disciplined to not underestimate their enemy that uses swords, shields, spears, and on occasion, magic. The same could be said for the fantasy armies as well. They’re not stupid. They literally don’t know what they’re up against because they’ve never fought an army like ours before. And this isn’t crapping on fantasy either. It’s just showing how a medieval fantasy realm where magic exists would react if it were to meet face-to-face with a modern world filled with technological wonders such as cars, computers, and other electrical stuff. Plus many of the modern and fantasy characters get along quite well along with having some nice cultural exchanges. For example, mages, who are considered to be the smart ones in the fantasy genre, are introduced to computers which is a tool used by scientists in the modern world. Point is, I don’t believe this anime is meant to show “HAHA! MACHINE GUN GO BRRT!!! F*** LOTR!” Like come on. Both the modern/sci-fi and the high fantasy genres are actually being well-respected here. Edit: For the record, I’ve thought of an idea of writing a story about a small group from a modern world meeting with a small group from a fantasy world. An Army Ranger, an FBI chick, and a computer hacker meet a battleaxe-wielding iron armor wearing barbarian, an elf sorceress, and a bow-wielding thief to form a team together to fight a necromancer who has an army on his side. And then come to find out, I discover this anime.

The JSDF has a lot of support. There is no cost to step in and out through the Ginza gate. The only limit is the volume of the gate. In the novel and manga, it is revealed that the gate is an interdimensional wormhole that opens only for a certain amount of time, this is because the gods of the special region only use that world as a playground and they don't give a shit about people's lives. Even so, they open the gate from time to time to bring in new races from other worlds as if it were a zoo and the gods close it after that. The WHY is important: It cannot remain open forever because it will simply tear apart the reality of both dimensions, causing the end of the world or the arrival of beings that inhabit the dark space between worlds.

In the strike as a retaliation on the senate building, the special forces were lazing the target. They were inserted into the vicinity already covertly and not in the view of anyone. When the senate building was hit, you see explosion first followed by a pause then the sound of the explosion. A very good detail on the sonics.

The Templin Institute's ability to reach multiple alternate universes has made its way to anime. I can't wait to see more shows that you'll make based on anime

This was a very fun and refreshing change of pace that I definitely didn't expect, GATE owns and I'm sure so many people here in the comments are as excited as I am, or now have an opportunity to check out a new anime that they otherwise wouldn't be aware of.

The manga's latest chapter is so bloody, JSDF was met with strong guerilla resistance

Its explained in the manga that the GATE itself is a bridge between worlds, think of dimension/worlds as like string and when they touch they connect allowing people to cross over. The Special region is like a HUB for theses worlds and many have come from separate worlds. read it for yourself as im not spoiling the good parts

Japan wouldn’t exist if this portal really existed, no way the US, China and Russia would allow the country to get acces to recourses from an entire new world. Without them

GATE is such a great start to doing military animes on this channel! I'd love to see things like Section 8 (Ghost in the Shell: SAC), UN Cosmo Navy (Space Battleship Yamato), and the Earth Federation (Universal Century Gundam).

Let's go, Templin covers anime now. GATE is a good pick. It has its issues (a lot of issues) but nothing else quite scratches that itch of modern fighter jets dogfighting dragons. Could you guys cover Knights of Sidonia? It's pretty obscure but I feel like it would be a good fit for this channel. The mechas are some of the most realistic out there in my opinion and the generation ship setting is neat.
