Japan Sinks 2020 gets a lot of flack, but it's WAY better than people give it credit for. underneath this disaster horror is a message about Japan, it's society, it's history and it's future. It's an existential look into what Japan means to it's citizens and the world at large, and SO much more.

One thing I do want to note, a lot of autistic people who “can’t” communicate are unable to do so because they were never taught. A lot of neurotypical people assume speaking is the only form of communication worth anything, but then neglect any other method for said people like writing or sign language or speech assistance technology. It’s less that we’re trapped by circumstance, and more by (often inadvertent) design by neurotypical family members. I got lucky, my autistic traits were maskable. Lots of autistic traits aren’t and needing different communication is a hurdle way too many people are forcing to figure out how to overcome not heir own.
@RT-zn9bj
@RT-zn9bj 2 жыл бұрын
I understand your point, however “neurotypicals” do too. Speech IS the only form of communication worth anything…right now. Society often has a problem with the way they deal with politics and social issues. We tend to blame a group of people, rather than a system. Like you, who say “neurotypical people” are responsible for the lack of communication skills taught to autistic children. In a way, you’re right. But rather than blame a group of people who will undoubtedly have mixed reactions to their blame, and who will most definitely avoid taking any helpful action until pushed, I think it’s important to recognize the fact that it is the SYSTEM-that is, the education system-that needs to change. We will spend the next hundred years shouting into the void, “Neurotypicals did us wrong!” But what we really need to focus on is getting the education system to start teaching *useful, universal skills*. Sign language, Morse code, expressions to use (and accept) when someone is feeling overwhelmed. Communication is one of the biggest obstacles in this world, and these problems affect more than just the communication-deficit. It would be much simpler, much easier with time, to require teaching of a universal language rather than spend years trying to develop technologies that do it for us. We will never get anywhere blaming each other. What kind of solution would ever come from that? Demanding that a group of an unspecified amount of people take responsibility for slights against people they’ve never known will never amount to much. But if we focus on REAL, POSSIBLE solutions, I believe we can truly get somewhere. Perhaps soon.
@lordblazer
@lordblazer 2 жыл бұрын
@@RT-zn9bj Um how do you know neurotypicals invented those things? A lot of shit has been invented by neurodivergent people... Neurotypical folks don't have that type of attention span yo.
@lordblazer
@lordblazer 2 жыл бұрын
@@RT-zn9bj another thing. I never thought I would see someone on the internet actually attack people who struggle with communication. For many people on the Autism Spectrum, yes Neurotypicals tend to normalize their specific communication style to the point that it's fucking hard AF even for those with high functioning autism. literally neurodivergent brains are wired differently. It's only a disability when you craft social rules in a manner of which makes shit harder for those who are neurodivergent. and I mean the unspoken shit, not the spoken rules. But here is a neurotypical dude on here, that is literally having a persecution complex over the fact that someone said that society doesn't accommodate people on the autism spectrum. Which btw is 100% fucking true. Most societies don't. In fact nearly almost every culture heavily stigmatizes it.
@RT-zn9bj
@RT-zn9bj 2 жыл бұрын
@@lordblazer …what? Either you misread my comment, or you didn’t read it at all. Like…at all. Because you’re making no sense. I never said neurotypicals created anything? And I didn’t attack anyone? And I’m not a dude, and I’m not neurotypical. I too am on the spectrum, so once again, let’s stop using our labels as a way to silence and blame others that are different from us. Honestly, I feel like you’ve read a completely different comment than mine because your response makes NO sense.

I really loved this show and this video captured so many reasons why I loved it so much. This year's put everyone through the wringer, and just like the characters in Japan Sinks 2020, we've had to decide what's truly important, in a world where change and adversity seems amplified and never ending. Videos like this one keep me going, and it's nice to see such a passionate and talented channel not give up despite adversity too. The video's ending even got me choked up! Don't give up, Bonsai Pop. You've made my day!

I actually like Japan Sinks a ton. But it gets a 7/10 because while it's gorgeous and has a good message about what a country is (I loved how they rebuilt), Animation was great, story was pretty good. But the character development just killed me there at the end. 10/10 vid though as usual! Getting some of the background and the thematic analysis was awesome. :3

I've been going through an existential crisis and the show helped me a good deal. I'm glad you guys still make videos and please keep doing it as you are all very talented. Japan Sinks 2020 overall is a story about moving forward with life and not to be afraid of change.

I've heard a few reviews of Japan Sinks, but you're the only ones who talked about the autistic child getting killed in a way that didn't mock the scene. Not that other people were making fun of autism, but that they felt the death was so out of place and ridiculous or that it seemed like it was an almost slap stick comedy kind of moment even though it clearly wasn't comedic. But you gave great analysis and insight on that and the rest of the movie, glad to have heard your thoughts on it.

Honestly my favorite anime of all time. The first viewing was an absolutely harrowing experience and Haruo's death hit me harder than almost any other death in fiction, I was rooting for him the most. There is so much subtext that it can almost be faulted as being too dense for its own good. You could probably make a 1+ hour long video with just the things you had to leave out. I feel like a lot of people who give it flak really did come in expecting something completely different, which is a shame. I hope it does get some more universal praise someday, it absolutely deserves it! Also this video was wonderful, absolutely gonna support this channel

The way I viewed the commune section was in terms of the old clashing with the new to dissuade true progress. You have an autistic child, someone who their parents admit would not be accepted in Japan's old and stubborn culture that is heavily dismissive disabilities. The parents decide to form a new society that will result in the child being embraced amd celebrated as an equal. The resulting society brings together everything the old views of Japan hate. Recreational drug usage, worldwide food menus with flexible options for serving, people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, convicts etc. It brings together what the old views of Japan view as rejects and gives them a home that is almost assuredly better for everyone. Then old Japan (gramps) comes in and tears the community down, viewing everything through bitter traditionalism and a reluctance to change. The old Japan tries to steal the seed of change (the autistic child) thereby tearing the new Japan down with it. Suddenly people who in all reality would want to flee (like the cook) end up refusing to, acknowledging that being a reject of Japan there is nowhere for them to go. Its a beautiful statement on how harsh and judgemental Japan is in more subtle ways instead of just the standard xenophobia you see depicted frequently. It showcases all of the little ways Japan at large can refuse to lighten up or allow change. This is all word vomit as I'm typing this up before bed in a single draft, but I hope /something/ that I'm saying is getting across haha

Also I think Estonia was used since its a beautiful and more accepting/socialist society. Its a place where everything is considered a public right from housing to health insurance, even high speed internet is considered a basic right everyone is given. KITE being a transman from somewhere like Estonia is meant to represent the inverse of old age Japan. He is a beacon of diversity and the benefits of a more accepting, supportive society both socially and governmentally (is that a word). He is the one who warns of all the dangers old age Japan proposes to ita denizens, and in the end new age Japan (symbolized as you mentioned by Go and Ayumu) is saved by a foreigner giving everything they can to support them in their most dire hour. In the end Japan is not saved by any old age radicals clinging to the decaying and outdated beliefs Japan used to hold. Instead it is saved by the next generation of forward thinking individuals who accept help from the outside and work together with others to create a better world

Bonsai Pop I fucks wit y’all heavy. You fellas are one of the only few channels I enjoy, and was stoked that your samurai champloo video was recommended. I actually viewed this series twice. Also, got my mom to watch this with me we watched it all one Sunday, she actually enjoyed it and thought it was really good and always says how anything can happen and people who are born healthy don’t appreciate it and can be so careless and it can be over in an instant. Honestly this Anime, was crazy. From my experiences in life and being placed In situations where life is a very fragile thing and is easy to betray oneself by not appreciating what one has, and taking it for granted. it isn’t hard to loose it all and not even realizing how fortunate one can be until it’s over and it’s all said and done with nothing to do but drown in ones misconception. The beauty of the moment is the beauty sadly lost which can make someone wince at reality allow one to catch their breath and realize the ‘Now’ and see the real lies of the smoke and mirrors and begin to take small steps in improving the quality of their wellbeing for oneself and your loved ones. Seeing how everyone sacrifices themselves in order to allow the opportunity to continue living, in this series hit me in the feels because I’ve seen the struggle of my parents working hard and putting themselves secondary. I was a fucking brat growing up sometimes and now that they’re old I just wanna be with them all the time, and be a better person and show them it wasn’t all in vain. Japan 2020 intensified the awareness I already have on life and made me really think about how everything has led till now and to cherish and truly make the most of it. If anyone reads this thank you for your time. Plus that rap part made me cringe. ( well I watched it in English)

I'm surprised you didn't touch on the meanings of their names: Ayumu = Walk Go = literally go By the end, I put together that their names emphasized optimism and the need to continue walking/going forward with their new, unexpected future.

16:22 "his only words -his whole life- were in thanks of his mother. His *rock*..." I'm not sure if that was a morbid pun but I am ashamed to say it made me giggle.

The comedic timing whenever the dad gets blown up in the kid gets killed by that rock is fantastic I laughed so hard Don't get me wrong though The gravity of the situation still hit me but s*** it was just way too funny

Just came across this video after watching Pause and Select's "Why Japan Sinks Matters." This is a great summary of the show and its themes! That said, I'm not convinced. My problem with it wasn't that I didn't get the symbolism, in fact at many points it was so heavy-handed it would be hard to miss. My problem was more at the level of form. I'm a huge fan of Yuasa's and in contrast with his other work, Japan Sinks 2020 to me, felt rushed, unfocused, and incomplete. Many of its issues may have been solved by the show simply being longer. It tried to fit so many themes and so many plot points into such a short time that many moments that were meant to be tragic or poignant ended up (at least to me) being almost funny instead. I get that the fast pace is intended to overwhelm and create a sense of tumult, something Yuasa was successful with in Devilman Crybaby by picking out the most important moments and giving them some time to breath. Here, moments that should be important end up feeling inconsequential because they're given no narrative weight. Somewhat unrelated, but I do have problems with the way you presented a couple things. One, phrasing Japan's conquest during WWII as "the first time you step up to play ball with the big boys" is reductive of the atrocities that Japan committed toward China and the rest of eastern Asia, not to mention Pearl Harbor. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are obviously horrific and in no way justified and the ravaged population of Japan were not the same as the imperialist government, but it's in that government's best economic interests to be seen as the victim and hope that the world forgets that they were actually the perpetrators in many cases. Going along with that perception ignores the fact that Japan's nationalist cultural identity at least partially stems from that history of ruthless imperialism. Second, saying that people with severe autism "usually are hyper-intelligent" but often unable to communicate, while I'm sure well-meaning, contributes to a perception of people with autism and neurodivergent people in general as an "other" that has either special powers, or some kind of childlike innocence - when they're really just people who's brains work differently. Again I'm sure it was well-intentioned, but word choice is important. Anyway, thanks for the video, you've got a thumbs-up from me! I'll be very surprised if anyone actually reads this long-ass comment on a 4-month-old video, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out on (figurative) paper anyway. If anyone did, thanks very much for reading!

I had no idea about japanese lacquer until this video, but it was bananas cool to find out that I was half-way there with acknowledging that the "damage" my cats delivered onto my furniture which I've always been fine with and love it whenever they put they're mark on our materials. Especially now that I know about this newfound lore for myself. Regardless of how drunk I am at the moment, the japanese have such an amazing point of view of material history. Especially as an italian who appreciates architecture, it's so cool to see that kind of novelty with everyday items.

I hadn’t heard anything about Japan Sinks before checking it out. It was the most pleasant surprise I’ve had all year when it comes to anime. I love movies and shows that realistically show what real people might go through when going through something so horrible. About the BLM stance and loss of viewers: maybe there are subscribers that stopped watching after hearing about your stance on this. Hear me out. Yes, there are people that will disagree with you. BLM is a divisive movement to a lot of people. Both sides seem to be arguing past eachother. The worst part about the political climate is that everything is so polarized that people view anyone with a differing opinion as evil or a bad person. There are also a lot of people who are just tired of being barraged by politics in everything they see. At the end of the day you have to do what you feel is morally right. If the fallout is worth it to you, then good for you. I won’t stop watching or supporting you because I disagree with your politics. I personally believe that most people are trying to create a net good in the world, even when others think they’re evil. Also you’re making some of the best anime critiques that the English speaking world has ever seen. I hope I’m not sounding like an asshole or an unhinged racist. It’s hard for anyone to even mildly criticize BLM without them being branded as a hateful person. Anyway I’m a huge fan of your channel. Almost every video you make either turns me on to a new anime or gives me greater appreciation for the anime I’ve seen.

As of 4:00am 9/9/20: KZbin appears to be screwing you harder than ever; this video has less than 8,000 views after being out for almost 4 days! I just watched this one myself. With work and 3 kids, it can be difficult to find time to watch the tv shows and KZbin videos I like. And I guess I must be lucky with KZbin, I have been subscribed to you guys since the channel started, and they always recomend your videos when they come out. I've never understood the algorithm.

I just saw this anime as a giant metaphor. I think the anger that the majority had toward this anime was that some characters were treated unfair, or some stuff didn’t make sense, like the harmed leg. But if you see it as a giant metaphor, it’s pretty fair and realistic? I don’t I just liked the anime very much.

Glad you mentioned Bosnia. I am a former refugee migrant. I was born in Split, Crotia while my majority family left Bosnia during that time. Glad my father, mother, and rest of family members fleed or survived. However for some they never saw the next day. This is such an interesting take on a show that is recommending to watch on Netflix. I will take this recommended show. Japan 2020 sounds so contemporary and even how we look at the world from different perspectives.

sucks that your being punished for talking about things that need to be talked about this video is a prime example too many when talking about this anime just seemed to miss so much about the message of what this anime is supposed to be about when in reality this is extremely thoughtful and wonderfully told story about Japan and all that is both wrong and right about it that people just for some reason completely missed so it makes me quite happy to see you guys hit so many of the good points about this anime that really should be watched by all, the director really knew what he was doing and poured his passion into it and that really shows, I'm looking forward to future content I never mind waiting for you guys cause you have literally never disappointed me and I don't foresee you starting to do it now

Brother I’ve been watching your videos for months. I don’t believe it’s the Afro samurai video (I was also one of the people that didn’t like that video) I love your content even if we don’t agree on everything. I never get alerted until DAYS after you upload even if I have your notifications on plus I have to scroll through my subs just to find your vids. It’s been like this since I’ve first subbed. I’m sure they do this to everyone because I don’t get spooky rice notifications nor do I get masked man notifications. All of those channels I have the bell notification on. It’s just KZbin being shit like always
